Do the new MK Logic Rapid Fix sockets actually save installation time. Time to hand over the new MK screwless terminal socket to our tame electrician Ross Sands.
The MK Rapid Fix uses Wago terminals built into a 13A double socket.

  • The pertinent factors here (apart from price) are speed and pressure/tension. Even if screw connections can be made quicker than constant pressure connectors (which only some people could do), constant pressure is the important safety (re fire and repairs) factor that makes them the far better connectors to use. All we need now though is enough people to buy this range, or other manufacturers to compete with MK, so the price drops.

  • I would like to see a plastic U piece just before the lever terminals.. About a few mm from the lever terminal. Push the conductor in, then any stress from cables behind is put on the U piece, _not_ the terminal itself. Similar to having a cable clamp, but no screw involved and no pressure clamping of the conductor.

  • Let's face it you wouldn't be going at that speed day in day out. But the push fit system is quicker regardless of what people may say. I have said for a long time it should be in fuse boards, that way it will stop the idiots causing board fires. Imagine giving those electricians that are negative about these sockets, a brace and bit for drilling joists, a Rawl tool for masonry and the good old Yankee screwdriver with slotted screws, I wonder what their reaction would be then 😂

    • @@acelectricalsecurity You say idiots causing fuse board fires, I went to another job yet again yesterday where the meter installer hadn't even screwed the tails in from the fuse head. When the customer was under the stairs getting a gas reading they knocked the cable out. Considering they seem to average about a days worth of training I think meters should have these connections before consumer units. Thankfully no one died but it's becoming a little concerning how common it is to find faults with the metering equipment caused by rushed installs.

    • Many of the consumer unit fires I've seen have been at the busbar where its made little to no connection for years with the often client reporting an intermittent fault on the circuit before the smell of fish and then the obvious fire 🔥 even I've missed the busbar screw. Defo a place to triple check!

  • Gotta be the way forward. I mean, would you rather jam 3 wires into 1terminal or 1 wire into 1 terminal 3 times. One thing I'm thinking though, especially with consumer units and the need to remove conductors for testing: At what point does the factory torque weaken and how is it checked?

I wanna know from the manufacturer that these tests have been done and they have the results to prove it. We have UL listing here in the states which helps to differentiate better tested and capable products than those that have not gone through that process. Making them safer and appropriate to use in the right situations our standards refer to use of products with this kind of laboratory/engineering testing, separate from manufacturers own tests.

  • I like the idea of them as specially for two day and five day corse junkies, but I prefer the screws, I don’t need to rush , when you rush you loos concentration and make mistakes and that’s when you end up killing someone if not you’re self. As for over tightening the screws and damaging the conductors? Isn’t true, I have always tightened the screws till they stop and have never never broken or damaged a conductor , . Isn’t that the reason we double the ends over to give the screws something to bite onto and insure a tight connection secondly conductors can be pulled out of wago s David Savery did it in one of his videos . So I think the argument about loose connections is dead. But would I install those sockets ? Yes if that’s what the client wants and they buy them there self . Great video guy’s as always 👍❤️⚡️

  • It’s not just about speed it’s about reliability and safety of the made connection both at installation and over time-say 20 years. From a cost perspective v time saved - on a new installation or a full rewire it is highly likely to be cost effective on a socket replacement not so much.

My situation may be different here in Australia - our labor rates are HIGH and the materials costs are probably double what you are paying for. Basically - the labor cost saving is moot by the materials cost going up. You are literally saving pennies, by paying pounds.

      @tcpnetworks@tcpnetworks2 жыл бұрын
  • So you saved 80 seconds over 5 sockets, or 16 seconds per socket. Even at £90 per hour that is still only a saving of 40p per socket. It's pretty hard to justify these on time saved for installs under good conditions. And justifying them on quality of connections is awkward because it's only double sockets, any real install will contain other accessories, so you can't offer the customer a fully screwless install. Where I could see these being a boon is for installs under adverse conditions, sockets in difficult locations, existing wires that are too short etc.
