Joe Louis 214 lbs lost to Rocky Marciano 184 lbs by TKO in round 8 of 10
Date: 1951-10-26
Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA.
Louis was a 6 to 5 betting favorite.
Louis was knocked down by a left hook in the eighth round. He got to one knee at the count of three and took an eight-count before getting up. Marciano moved in for the kill and ended the fight with a right that sent Louis through the ropes and onto the ring apron.
Imagine fighting 69 fights, heavyweight champ of the world and in your last fight you face Rocky Marciano… what a warrior Joe Louis was/is.
Tyson would of easily took Rocky out with a few uppercuts… he leaves himself open all the time.
@@MrGordie9 strangely enough Tyson was very vulnerable to an uppercut himself. First loss ko’d by a beautiful uppercut (followed by a couple of hooks) James quick Tillis caught him with a lot of uppercuts. Although Tyson was an uppercut specialist he too was easily caught with them. Look back at his fightz.
@@MrGordie9mike tyson vs rocky marciano would be a fight resolved by unanimous decision, with scenes of war between tyson and marciano knocking each other down at all times, there's no way you can give victory right away to one
@@MrGordie9 Tyson weighed 220 and Marciano weighed 184 in this fight and never more than 190. Marciano would be a light heavyweight or super middleweight today as LHW is 168-175 and cruiser weight is 175-200. If you think Tyson would beat Marciano then you definitely know Tyson is destroying Alvarez, Bicol, Beterbiev, Usyk, Dorticos, Opetaia and all the other SMW, LHW and CRWs. So he would still be 49-0 in todays world.
He was 37 too old Joe Luis
The fact that he cried after beating joe tells me that he was a classy guy , there’s no other way to look at it
Crying is ridiculous it is what it is
I'm not sure I could have boxed Joe knowing that he was my hero and this is his last fight. Yeah I'm with Rocky on this one....true Gentleman.
Two of the greatest gentlemen that ever strapped boxing gloves
Rocky ran 30 miles daily for 2920 (8yrs) days nonstop. Keep in mind a marathon is 26.2 miles. That's not all. In addition to his daily 30 mile runs he'd also include sprinting uphill backwards and shadowboxed under water for an additional 2 hours. Rocky was superhuman and will forever be my hero.
That can't be real! 😮
She's wrong...lol He ran 5 to 6 miles a day...........@@fdl3692
Greatest of all due to his late when he was 24 or 25 yes old so his own natural power and as unbeaten pro boxer with about 43 ko and on points 6 times plus 30 miles everyday what a great runner work hard for important challenge to win all fights
People become very strange after a couple good wins and receiving a title this craft is ever changing and there's always a young hungry lion behind you that's just the way it is
What's your source for making such a claim?
Seen interview with Joe's son talking about how Joe was rocky's hero growing up and that Rocky was in tears backstage after the match because he know that was going to be joe's last match.
Joe Louis is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential boxers of all time. He reigned as the world heavyweight champion from 1937 until his temporary retirement in 1949. He was victorious in 25 consecutive title defenses, a record for all weight classes. Louis had the longest single reign as champion of any boxer in history.
To put that into prespectvie: Marciano's entire career spanned 7 years, with 3 of those being his title reign. *Joe Louis' title reign alone lasted 12 years*

And Rocky fought an old Louis, he could have never beaten a prime brown bomber. He cried his eyes out after because he knew he beat up a helpless old man. Pfft...
@Rocky._.Marciano Yeah sure slow and small with a short reach and weighing 188? Keep doing drugs, Rocky would be easily knocked out in brutal fashion.

And could take a a mean punch
Marciano was at a height & reach disadvantage but showed no fear and great technique to get in close. He put his whole body behind his punches many of which missed & he still won. Reminds me of Mike Tyson.
Joe Louis estaba en desventaja, estaba en el ocaso de su carrera, esta pelea fue en el año 51 y los años de gloria de Louis fue el año 40 , ya estaba 11 años más viejo
Marciano reminds me of George Foreman, as you wrote, Marciano's every punch put his whole body into the punch. Louis took many of Marciano's punches.
Joe Louis in his prime would have annihilated Marciano. End of story.
@@martysomoco That may be so but I was impressed with Marciano's courage. He was relentless against bigger opponents and found a way to win.
Marciano cannot be compared to true heavy weights such as Foreman. He was manufactured for the heavy weight division due to the lack of competition. That's why he quit! I think in lower divisions, he would have been a good fighter who possibly could have won some titles. Imagine as a middle weight or ?@@jkrasney1
All I know is that Joe Louis was heavyweight champion of the world for 12 years in a row. That’s not even fathomable.
Best boxer of all time and a true gentleman, too. Never got in trouble. Never a scandal. A standup guy. Him and Marciano were great friends and visited each other often. Joe actually saw Rocky shortly before his death. RIP to both, true warriors. One the longest title reign in boxing history til this day, the other an undefeated king of his era.
It's why he's the greatest.
If rocky was black it would be a different story. You mad at the white man?
Joe was at the end here. A true champion. Never got in trouble. Never bad mouthed a soul. Pure class.
He was past the end he came out of retirement for this fight and fresh off the couch at 37 he went 7 rounds and scored 64 losing the fight to Rocky’s 69 points he was gas-ed out the fight was nearly a draw he won one round of the 7 truth be told he shouldn’t have even got that far prime Louis is destroying Rocky and this fight proves that.
@@colinwalker9892 The Bomber was great. So was Rocky. 49-0 and 43 knockouts. Who can say? Not you or me.
@@jackfarquahard6933 Lol not who but what can say, this fight does. Rocky had a hard time with an old man lightyears past his prime period.
@@colinwalker9892 I'll believe your predictions when you provide the lottery winning numbers beforehand three days in a row.
No need to fight here…the Rock was great, but he paid homage to Louis in all post fight commentary…Louis is 2nd only to Ali and even that is a fair debate--think of who Louis faced in his prime. Men who would be champions for years in any other era.
Rocky's huge titanium fists were no different than two 18-wheeler Mack trucks. He wasn't called Rocky Mack for nothing. He was special. I get tears in my eyes just thinking about him. My god he was special.
Güzel benzetme 😆
Marciano would put his head down and keep coming and coming. He had amazing energy and stamina. He could take a punch. It didn't bother him. He wore down every fighter he faced.
Of course it didn't bother him. Louis had no lunch to speak of at this point. He failed to ko 8 of the 9 fighters he fought before Rocky. He only managed to take out 36 year old Lee Savold who was more washed up than Louis himself.
Two excellent fighters in the history of boxing, it's a privilege to watch
How tuff was Joe Louis? In his fight before this(actual comeback fight) He fought Andy Walker! Andy had a record of 17wins 3 loses and was California Heavyweight champion! Andy Walker got the crap beat out of him for 10 rounds and never won another fight! He ended up being 17 and 20. Andy moved to Tacoma, Washington and was a sparring partner for family friend and Heavyweight contender Pat McMurtry! Andy lived and died just 3 blocks from my house. RIP Andy,Pat, Joe and Rocky✌️❤️🙏👊
The chin and stamina on rocky is incredible
I never realized how controlled and efficient Louis was...he didnt waste any energy with wild punches, or trying to KO Rocky with a haymaker. Unfortunately, this was peak Marciano - a fighter with no let-up, an iron jaw, almost limitless endurance, and frightening power with that atomic right that he called "Suzy Q". Rocky was a werecking ball....
Rocky was an animal of disciplined training. Endurance and power.
And non stop energy balance and unorthodox pressure
The "Passing Of The Torch". One great fighter on the way up...and one great fighter on the way down. It's happened all thru the history of boxing. Joe was on an 8 fight winning streak...and he was a 6-5 favorite to win the fight.
A closer glance at Joe Louis 8 fight winning streak which helped him become #1 ranked contender before he faced Rocky Marciano. Below is the "SIX" (6) boxers Louis beat: #1) 196 lb Cesar Brian -- Decision -- Brian had an abysmal 36% KO's. Brian's career record of 49 wins 11 losses looks okay until ya see (25) of his wins came against his fellow Argentinians who helped pad his record. #2) 191 lb Freddie Beshore -- KO -- 28-10-1 ..5' 9" Freddie had a featherfisted 24% KO's. F-LEVEL Beshore was on a 4-fight losing streak before he faced Joe. *Why would Joe even consider fightin someone who had just lost 5 out of his last 6 fights??* We all know why! #3) 187 lb Omelio Agramonte -- Decision -- I watched their entire fight and Joe's combinations were non-existent. Agramonte had a low-power 45% KOs. The announcer said Louis was supposed to fight Charles after the Savold fight but the Louis camp ducked the light heavyweight. #4) 194 lb Andy Walker -- TKO -- 17-8-7 Andy was powderpuffer with 17% KO's. His career record was 18 wins 20 losses - *F-LEVEL.* #5) 188 lb Omelio Agramonte -- Decision *AGAIN* -- *Why Twice??? What happened to much better opponents Valdez, Baker, Johnson, Pompey, Maxim, Matthews?? Where did LaStarza and Moore disappear to?? Why not Charles or Walcott again??* We all know why! #6) 190 lb Lee Savold -- KO -- Savold lost 45 fights and was KOd 12 times. Even the announcer said, "Joe Louis reflexes are but a memory." *These two should have been retired. They just pushed Louis through towards Marciano so everyone could fill their pockets with money.* #7) 197 lb Cesar Brian -- Decision *AGAIN* -- *Why Twice??? What happened to much better opponents Valdez, Baker, Johnson, Pompey, Maxim, Matthews?? Where did LaStarza and Moore disappear to?? Why not Charles or Walcott again??* We all know why! #8) 179 lb Jimmy Bivins -- Decision - 5' 9" light heavyweight Bivins had 25 losses and was KOd 5 times. He also had an abysmal 27% KO's. Talk about bum-of-the-month-club, WOW. Notice the 5 decisions. A prime 24 year old (1938) speedy combination puncher Joe Louis would have easily accumulated 8 knockouts against those powder-puffers. It was obviously a predetermined carefully hand-picked set-up. So Joe comes outta retirement and takes the worst beating of his career from a light heavyweight (Charles) then he fights 6 stiffs and becomes #1 ranked contender. Joe looked like he was wadding through mud when he fought little Rocky. *Boxing-elites, Italian-mafioso and the IRS really needed Joe to be ranked #1 inorder to get their Louis vs Marciano $$-SHOW-$$. The only loyalty the Italian-mob had was to money.* Hey they even took 50% of Marciano's earnings and all ticket sales, all in all $2 Million. $2 Million in 1955 is equivalent to $21 Million today. Norris, Carbo, Weill had complete control over little Rocky and very carefully selected his opposition. *The Louis camp negotiated a deal with the IRS under which he would come out of retirement, with all his net proceeds going to the IRS. After boxing Joe ended up in the pro wrestling circuit and they still took his money. But that gig finished when Cowboy Rocky Lee lunged onto him with both feet, his boots colliding with Louis' torso. The crash cracked three of his ribs. It left him with a cardiac contusion and officially ended his stint as a wrestler. Children used to send him one dollar in the mail. In his biography he said a child walked up and handed him a dime. When Joe was broken physically and mentally the IRS finally stopped collecting. He lived with friends until he died.*
37 year old Joe Louis had already been fightin *"17yrs"* with 68 fights, and 96 fights before 2 million soldiers during his 4 year military service before facing little Rocky. Joe's speedy reflexes and combinations were non-existent. His movement looked as if he was wadding through mud. And his 8 fight winning streak consisted of 6 predetermined featherfisted opponents. 38/39 year old cruiserweight Journeyman Joe lost throughout his entire career, beginning, middle, end. He had 49 wins 20 losses according to BoxRec. Walcott had already been fightin for *"22yrs"* with an abysmal 44% KO's before facing little Rocky. He definitely was not prime. Journeyman Joe was fightin professionally when little Rocky was only *"'SEVEN"'* years old. Walcott Lost (20) times and was KO'd (6) times. Light heavyweight Ezzard Charles had already been fightin *"15yrs"* with 95 fights before facing little Rocky. Charles had the lowest ever 42% KO's. *His best boxing years were definitely behind him as he was factually showing traces of ALS in 1951.* LH Charles Lost (25) times and was KO'd (7) times. 41 year old light heavyweight Archie Moore had already been fightin *"20yrs"* with 178 fights before facing little Rocky. Exactly 95% of his 141 TKO's came against welterweights, middleweights, light heavyweights and small cruiserweights. LH Archie was fightin professionally when little Rocky was only *"'TWELVE"'* years old. Moore Lost (23) times and was KO'd (7) times. Little cruiserweight Marciano only fought a measly *"7yrs"* before he abruptly "Quit" during his prime at only 31yrs of age becuz *he was "embarrassed of losing," that's what his younger brother Peter said.* "Quitting" so soon is not only shameful but not fair to other Heavyweights that had 15 to 20 year careers. Dozens of Heavyweights could have retired undefeated had they Quit after only *"7yrs"* *If you eliminate his secretive debut fight under the alias Rocky Mackjeanne, he actually fought "7yrs" because there was a 15 month gap between his 1st and 2nd fights. Read Mike Stanton to understand Rocky Mackjeanne vs. Les Epperson in Holyoke. Holyoke was in a circuit of gritty New England cities where ethnic rivalries played out in the boxing rings. Holyoke shoulda been named Bumville. Rocky Mackjeanne was shortened to Rocky Mack just before the fight.*
"One great fighter on the way up...and one great fighter on the way down." *Problem with that comment is-it does not apply to little 184-lb cruiserweight Rocky bcz he QUIT @ only 31yrs of age during his prime.. Correct???*
Joe was a 6-5 favorite bcz everyone wanted Joe to win. But all the professional boxing insiders knew better. Ferdie Pacheco said before the fight, "Not only is Joe Louis going to lose, he's going to take a frightful beating."

Rocky - so small (by today"s standards) at 5'10", 184 lbs. Yet he was relentless, brave, had a chin and self belief. By comparison Tyson Fury is 11 inches taller and 90 lbs heavier
What's Tyson Fury got to do with this? Dudes kind of a bum in my opinion. Very slow and sloppy compared to the past greats. He's just doing well because everyone else who's fast and talented is in the UFC these days.
However Rocky was the toughest of the toughest and I believe he could beat fury up
We can actually say that probably about most of the sports we know. I mean, seriously, by our actual standards, supposedly any of the champions of any sport, single or team could easily whoop the old single or teams from 50-100 years ago. So we think, but getting back to boxing, there are many factors to be considered when they win a fight: Stamina, strength, speed, ability, resources, bad decisions, corruption, etc, but mainly courage, determination and the indomitable desire to win, not just for themselves, but for the sake of boxing, and that, my friends has given the tittles to many of the champions we've seen. My admiration and my respect to them.
@@jollygrapefruit786 you think Francis nuganu would beat tyson fury in a boxing match ? Your smoking crack
@@jollygrapefruit786 hahahahaha on so many levels. Say what you want about Fury, but he's no bum. He's not only big, but also a good boxer. Also, the best talents are in the UFC? Are you kidding me. Totally different athletes in UFC compared to boxing. Also much more money in boxing compared to MMA so there's no rational reason the talent would go to the UFC compared to boxing if they had the talent for both sports. The mma guys don't have hands at all in 99% of the cases. Have you not seen how bad they are at striking? Do you even watch boxing lol. And lastly, do you not see why he compared Marcino with Fury? To show the size difference between fighters today and in the past. Also, do you not see how bad the level of boxing in the 50s was compared to now? Boxing has improved, so so much since then. This clip etc. is really bad boxing. Don't be a little hater.

@@Rocky._.Marciano absolutely yes. Louis had 25 title defenses. Marciano would be against the most lethal puncher in the history of the heavyweight division. It wouldn't be a slow, tired, one handed Louis he'd meet in the ring.
@@Rocky._.Marciano Marciano was on the decline at 32 years old and retired. He retired after 7 years of fighting. Louis fought 17 years and was 37. One look at prime Louis is enough to let you understand how far past his prime he was in the Marciano fight. Quit being a fanboy.
Rocky Marciano would have been an awesome MMA fighter. He almost looks like he's wrestling when he's boxing.
Many old-school boxers especially in the prewar era would cross train in wrestling and catch-wrestling. Dempsey is a prime example. Clinching used to be a lot bigger part of boxing.
Joe Louis was 37 years old. He stood 6’ 2” and weighed 212lbs. Rocky Marciano was 28 years old. He stood 5’ 10.5” and weighed in at 188lbs. It wasn’t the mismatch people would have you believe.
It was an OBVIOUS mismatch and a travesty that it ever happened. Louis only made a “comeback” because he was cheated out of millions by corrupt managers and a federal government that should still be ashamed of itself for what it did to him. Louis was a shell of the fighter he had once been. Even so, there were a few flashes of what he once was.

People complaining about Luis’s age but don’t mention Rocky started to learn how to box at the age of 23. He only had a few years of experience
That and he was shorter and lighter with Louis having a clear weight, height and reach advantage bbbbbbbbbbbbut out of prime. It's the racists that cry about Joe not being in his prime.
@@GOF313 Sure buddy. Rocky admits he felt his body going at 31/32 but Walcott, Louis, Moore, and Ezzard were prime at even older ages with 3x the amount of fights. They still beat younger guys so it's impressive Rocky beat up such great fighters, but why is it looked at as tarnishing someones legacy by looking at those wins in context? No WE MUST look at them in the most spectacular framing possible.
Joe Louis wasn't old at 37, he might have had more wear and tear from his years boxing, but wasn't old like critics like to say. Nowaday, we have boxers in their 40's still boxing.
@@GOF313 . Those same racists don't say anything about Muhammad Ali beating Sonny Liston in 1964. Liston was 32 and Ali was 22. Or Floyd Mayweather beating Conor McGregor. Mayweather was 40 and McGregor was 29. McGregor had limited boxing skills like Marciano. Mayweather wasn't getting called old. It's not always the about the age of the boxer, but rather the wear and tear has on them. Bernard Hopkins was fighting till his mid 40's. Manny Pacquaio is coming back to boxing in his mid 40's. So Marciano didn't get an easy win because Joe Louis was in his late 30's. Louis was the odds on favorite at the time and could have possibly won, if he didn't let Marciano back him to the ropes, Marciano's favorite tactic. Another thing, Marciano and Muhammad Ali met for a film based on a computer analysis on which boxing legends from the past and the current time would win. Marciano and Ali did some light sparring with pulled punches for the film. It later turned to real sparring when Ali played around with Marciano's toupee (purposely bopping Marciano on the head so his toupee would jump). It pissed Marciano and he started tagged Ali with real punches, and Ali responded with real punches too. Marciano managed to floor Ali. Marciano was 45 years old at the time, and Ali was 27 years old. Ali said that Marciano hit harder then Joe Frazier. Ali said that his arms were sore for several days. Ali said Marciano hit so hard, it jarred his kinfolk in Africa. Rumor is that Ali asked the film's producers, for more money because Marciano supposedly broke his ribs. So Marciano definitely deserves his respects.
@@HappyRoach1 Actually that Liston fight was highly disputed and was investigated by the FBI. Liston was involved with the mob and it wouldn't surprise me if he threw that fight against Ali. Sonny is a very underrated fighter, it's just very unfortunate he was involved with some very dodgy people. Also, unfortunate that we never got to see him fight Frazier. Him on his way out was still a very very good fighter.

I don't think it's a bad comparison in general and noting the differences can be interesting too - Tyson had the bobbing and weaving/peekaboo style while Marciano was a low, crouching slugger (which takes a ton of stamina) Rocky was more dangerous later in fights than Tyson while Tyson was more explosive early. Rocky has Tyson clearly beat in will, fortitude and heart. Tyson was a phenom while Rocky was an over achiever who perhaps even counted on being under estimated. 😅😂😭🤣 I need what u smoking! Marciano was the Tyson of his era, Ali confirmed that statement! That's funny, u should be comedian 😂 Tyson is the GOAT followed by Ali and Marciano. All 3 n their primes and Tyson would have knocked out Marciano in about 3rd round and maybe went 12 rounds with Ali then the great TKO HOOK and Ali would have went blind way earlier had Tyson n Ali fought n their primes. But hey, thanks for the laugh and I do respect your opinion, bc we'll never get to know cuzz.
A guy I used to work with used to say that Marciano was like a “hyena”, constantly chasing and dogging his opponent. His tremendous conditioning and limitless courage were a testament to his great will. Of course, his natural power was always there and trainer Charley Goldman made the most of it by “taking advantage” of his short stature and alligator arms. Despite all this, a prime Louis would likely have carved him up. If a washed-up Louis could mark Marciano up over 8 rounds, a 1938-1941 era Louis would have chopped him to pieces over 15.
Maybe, maybe not. Louis himself admitted that he always had trouble with fighters that fought with Rocky's style: low, crouching, and crowding in close at all times. And Marciano hit significantly harder. Joe Walcott fought both of them, and he said : "Joe could take you out with combinations... Marciano was a one-punch artist.... I have to say, with all respect to Joe, Marciano hit harder." Jack Dempsey said: "I've scored my share of knockouts along the way, but more often than not my opponents got up after being knocked down and had to be knocked down repeatedly. The same is true of Joe Louis. But Marciano needs only one solid smash and it's all over." Going back to the first point I made: Louis himself said he didn't think he'd have beaten Rocky, even if he'd fought Rocky while in his prime. He said: ""very few people knew this, but I had a weakness, a bad weakness. I didn't like to be crowded. And that was Marciano's thing. He always crowded. I knew I could never beat Rocky." (Louis was right about Rocky's crowding style -- being physically smaller than most heavyweights, and with the shortest reach of _any_ heavyweight champ, he _had_ to get in close, so he cultivated that style of boring in and crowding his opponent.) Rocky's trainer, Charlie Goldman, was asked about Marciano fighting a prime Joe Louis, and said: "It would have been a shorter fight. A younger Louis would have come after Rocky. And nobody can survive coming to Marciano." Since Louis himself admits that he had his greatest difficultly dealing the Rocky's style, and he didn't think he could have beaten him even in his prime, I have to think he was probably right. Half of any fight is believing you're going to win and if Louis believed he'd lose against The Rock no matter when they fought... Well, he may have made it a self-fulfilling prophecy.
@@Hibernicus1968 Bruh Louis was 38 years old here you can talk all day long but rocky literally went life and death with a nearly 40 year old man. Marciano would’ve gotten flatlined If they were both prime.

@@Hibernicus1968 Louis could’ve said whatever he wanted to, it doesn’t matter. Look at the fight here. Rocky getting wobbled by a 40 year old man. Louis in his prime destroys him
@@makaveli3189 "Getting wobbled" _where?_ Throughout this entire clip there isn't _one_ moment where Marciano appears to be in trouble. And for many if not most of them, he's got Louis _on the ropes_ -- where Louis doesn't ever seem able to put Marciano. If anybody is "getting wobbled" it's Joe. Louis was 37, not 40, and only 9 years older than Marciano (and 7 years younger than a 45 year-old George Foreman was when he unified the WBA, IBF, and lineal heavyweight championship titles by knocking out 26-year-old Michael Moorer). The fact that you have to artificially inflate Louis' age a few years says a lot about how objective you're willing to be. Louis was a far better boxer than Marciano was, and in his prime, certainly _could_ have beaten him -- especially in a rematch if he lost a first fight; Louis was arguably the best boxer ever at learning from defeats, and figuring out how to beat boxers who defeated him. But as Jack Dempsey said "no man has everything," and Louis admitted that Rocky's crowding style of fighting gave him the most trouble of any boxer's style. It's also certainly possible that a younger Louis would, as Rocky's trainer said, have been knocked out even sooner, because he very well could have been more aggressive, which would have played to Marciano's strength.
