Growing a chemical snake that looks like a turd
This is a new type of video style that we have decided to try. It is a lot more casual and it involves my brother and our friend (the camera guy). In this one, we burned calcium gluconate pills to make a weird snake thing, and it was something that I wanted to do for a while.

Alright just finished the video and I gotta say I wasn’t quite sure what you meant from your last video when you said you wanted to change up Nileblue and do something different, but I get it now and I really like it. The more casual and fun vibe of this video fits the channel very well (in my opinion) and I hope you’ll continue with and improve on this style in future Nileblue videos. I also hope the style doesn’t leak into Nilered which I view as a very strict and formulaic style which I also like and think is a lot more educational. Point is: Love the contrast between red and blue and I hope they’ll both continue their respective styles. Lots of love from an old fan
Well said. 😄

Really all of us in these stem majors just apply energy and divert energy to and away from things 😂 I’m an Astronomy and Astrophysics grad student, and even we add energy in a different form than eat to things such as a particle in a collider, or we take away energy by using liquid helium on a CCD so that we get less dark current etc :) once you dive deep into physics, chemistry etc you start to realize everything is just an interaction between energies in avway

Albert Ramirez Good comment with the music. Just have Kevin Macleod music in the background and that would complete the comedy 😂
I'm almost certain he is autistic. It seems like chemistry is his special interest. The amount of joy on his face when talking about it is incredible, it's the same look as when my (autistic) girlfriend talks about animals, the same look I have when I talk about degus, or mathematics, or enantimoners. The same look as my friend mari when they talk about autism. It's a look of pure joy.

as someone that use to work with presses a pill press is rather small but runs around 20 tons of pressure so to get a solid pill I would go at least 5 tons to 10 tons of pressure.
Burris Streaming yeah, i always wanted to make thermite billets this way just to see what a compressed mass would do instead of a diffused powder.
I actually tried doing it at 5, but it didn't work as well. The pill was packed too tightly or something and it wasn't as interesting when it burned.
@@NileRed holly molly it's him
@@nunyabisnass1141 I would be careful with trying to make thermite billets as there's a lot of heat generated when pressing powdered metals. I use to make powdered metal parts and they were so hot you couldn't touch them. not sure what is required to ignite thermite. if you do try this use as little pressure as you can.
@@hiddentruth1982 Ordinary iron oxide-aluminium thermite is pretty notorious for being stubborn to light without a material that puts out a lot of heat (usually an iron dust sparkler or magnesium ribbon are the ignition sources of choice)

I really enjoy when you go into depth and detail about the chemicals and their reactions!
3:00 lab coat and goggles weren't my first concern. You should never hold with your bare hands and without gloves a METAL object you are pointing a blowtorch at. Speaking from experience.
depends on the shape, something like a spoon is probably fine because most of the heat will dissipate by the time it gets to the handle

I like this casual format of video! It was a lot of fun to watch and serves as a really good contrast to the polished and professional videos on your main channel
I'm here watching a bunch of NileBlue videos after watching the superconductor video on the main channel and it's really funny to see him mentioning the superconductor project like half a year before finally deciding to go and do it and using the presses for the first time for this.
My students did this experiment last year and we used dry fuel tablets (for fire source). You can see the result in kzhead.info/sun/iZaGldKmbJ-Eh58/bejne.html (at 01:52)
Aw, that's so awesome!
I like the more casual/"experimental" style of this, my only issue is that the sound is very echoey/live. I recommend trying Lav mics or putting some kind of sound treatment on the walls of the lab to reduce reverb. Keep up the good work!
I feel like how it doesn't sound perfectly conditioned actually adds onto the more casual and fun theme
This substance seems to only “grow” when heat is applied directly to it and it lacks the fuel to burn on its own... just something to think on!
Also it's creating its own insulating layer or porus carbon which hinders the thermal decomposition :(
My thought also, Ian. That would explain why it slowed down so much when it was on the hotplate. :-D
Soooo just mix it with a fairly hot fuel mixture. If the concentration is low enough and the stuff burns relatively quickly, it should still form the foamy structure just fine, right.
Mush V. Peets Alternatively they could use an oxidizer so it creates its own fuel, then just add heat!
so... maybe its possible to mix it with a hypergolic mixture ? but then it kinda kills the idea of being non-toxic

I'm very impressed by how he was able to hold the glowing hot spoon without gloves
The heat that reached his hand is not fully transferred and therefore not burning his hand (although if he does it long enough, the heat will be sufficient enough to reflectively drop it)
