A wasp's nest is a complex structure that is a specialized nursery for all aerial-nest-building wasp species. These nests are easily identifiable - most of us have seen one at one time or another hanging from the outside of your home or on a tree. While these structures may look relatively simple, we can take a closer look inside to understand the different parts of the nest and how they help wasps raise a new generation of young.

"wasps are like butterfly's", I've never been stung by a butterfly for minding my own business
🤣🤣🤣
Can confirm. Every time I catch a butterfly I always ripped its wings off, then its legs, and lastly squash its head but no matter how it struggles it won't bit me
@Dark Shadow Ok, I am sorry next time i'll kill them fast so they dont have to suffer 🙏😇
@Joel Pik What? Why? it's so satisfying... you should try killing some of them. You won't regret it, friend.

@@themurrrr did they end your life?
@@Hellamoody They sure as hell tried! But honestly: I got very lucky. No stings to the face. And only my left hand, where they stung be good at least three times on my index finger.... yeah, that was swollen, sore and especially stiff for a few days. So my conclusion is: grouped stings suck ass. All the other stings were not that bad. Some clearly had no venom and so those did not hurt at all. Wasps can sting endlessly, but they have a limit to how much venom they have at that moment. So if they keep stinging like around after the 4 th sting they will have no more venom. And not all the stings with venom will have the a lot of venom. So yeah...
@@themurrrr to summarize: endure it to the 4th stings and you wouldn't feel pain anymore. 😌 That's one heck of experience, friend.
This might be a bold guess, but I think there might be wasps inside of the wasp nest
pretty neat idea, i also have a theory that they lay their eggs on the hexagon cells.
And that wasps in general pollinate flowers!?!?

Sure they build a crib for their babies but if that crib is on my house... I want it down! I think no one wants a spawning point for wasps in their neighborhood it’s best to call someone to remove it.
Burn the house and move to a better neighborhood
I just light their nest on fire and smash it with my baseball bat. So far in 8 years I've destroyed 4 nests total.
Like I am not against it, but dude. This is why humans changed the course of evolution for all other species...this right here.
@@avishivashisht3988 Ah, but the other territorial creatures in the animal kindgom that do the same thing do not affect evolution at all? It's a pretty simple thing- one group declares a home, and when other animals invade it they get repelled (usually killed).
The Hornet King, who made a post elsewhere in this comments section, actually transports some of the hornet nests he takes down to his house and put some up because they destroy other insects he doesn't want! The way he talked about them, they sounded sort of like miniature bats, but then again the stings are more of a threat (not a certainty) than most people want to potentially deal with. He also takes home the nests that he destroys and gives them to his chickens to eat. Interesting channel.
The wasps around my home make their nests out of mud.
Desert wasps? That’s how they are in AZ
We have those kinds of waps in Ohio too
Dirt or Mud Daubers. They make a compartment, paralyze a spider, carry it to the nest & stuff it in the cell, lay an egg on top of it, seal _that_ compartment with what will be the "floor" of the next compartment and REPEAT until she runs out of insects or energy. The eggs hatch & the larvae eat their breakfast over the next few weeks, then they pupate over the winter and gnaw their way out in the spring...

Did you see the perfect hexagonal design? They all coordinate and build that! They're really good architects
Architects don't build anything, they just draw on paper. Don't insult the wasps
You mean engineers
Meh. Bees can also do that. And they are more useful in the environment than wasps are.
It's because hexagons are the bestagons!
If I’m correct that they do it similarly to bees, the hexagons actually begin as circles. Over time, they deform to fill in the spaces between the circles, forming perfect hexagons.
“These wasps put a lot of care into building their nest for their babies. You don’t want to kick them out.” Um, yes I do sir
No, I'm definitely still going to destroy a wasp's nest that's on or near my home. I don't care if how long or how much energy they've spent on creating it. Wasp stings are horrible and they do sting for no reason apparent to me.
Yeah I can confirm, they do sting for no reason. That's reason enough for destroying their nests.
Wow wow I was a little wasp before
I really like bees. Wasps are just assholes.
@@kami7028 yes wasps are assholes and will sting you just because the grass is green and they will keep stinging you until you surrender lol
Uhhh also they’re horrible creatures?
Wasps are great for pest control. The issue happens when the nest becomes too big or if the nest is attached to your home/structure and they start eating your house.

Should've used scissors and forceps...at least someone with a degree in biological taxonomy research would know how to examine/dissect an insect built structure. That knife really crushed the comprehensively connected structures of that wasp nest.

I've messed around with extinct wasp nests. They are so fascinating to examine. If you have a metal structure you don't want them to build on. Spray the underlying structure with WD40. They can't get the root of their nest to stick because of it. I sprayed a fresh built outdoor car garage with it five years ago, and haven't had a single wasp nest since. (It may need more frequent application in more exposed structures, test on a small area before using to make sure it doesn't react to the paint. Don't use on vinyl siding. Void where prohibited)
Hey we’re you ever a wasp 🐝

i've a metal structure i don't want them to build on and i've never sprayed it with WD40 and they haven't built there????
That is a man suit filled with wasps, built to spread wasp propaganda. There is no way you can convince me otherwise.
Under rated comment.
Heavily underrated comment
Ugh got chills when he mention they lay eggs inside some insects/bugs X-[
Pain. The answer is pain. Not that there is anything wrong with wasps. I like wasps. I just like them to be somewhere else.
So many memories about incidents with wasps when I was a kid/teen
Meanwhile, in an alternate universe: Wasp: Today, we will be cutting open a human house to see what's inside!
This man said "maybe back off, those wasps put a lot of hard work in..." Not while it's wedged at the front of my porch. They dont pay rent, okay!?
@4:05 These humans put a lot of effort in building their homes for their babies. If the wasp nest is on my home it’s getting sprayed and removed. Not risking them stinging me or the kids.
I don't care if the wasp nest is nowhere near my home. But if its somewhere near my home, expect it to be dealt with immediately. I ain't bringing danger near myself, and other people.
Yeah that was a bit silly for him to say. In the wild maybe leave it but if it is in or near your home then it needs to go
Cool!! The flakiness of the wasp 🐝 nests remind me of croissants 🥐🧐
This is so interesting, I had no idea wasp nests were so complex.
Amazing architecture, humans must learn.
I'm still going to avoid wasps when I see them in the wild... But this was neat 😎
Wasps. There are wasps inside wasp nests. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
Who would have thought! The more you learn 🌈
They could have said "what's inside a wasp's nest? (besides wasps)"
Great video, thanks. Im terrified of wasps but there is a huge nest in the eaves of my house, I've been watching them and they are fascinating. Still scared but they haven't bothered me so live and let live 🙂
My wife threw a basketball & a can at the one on the side of our house. The nest fell, but the root is still attached. They haven’t cleared out enough for us to remove the rest
I'm impressed with this informative and interesting video about wasps. Wasps can sting you again and again, while a bee can only sting you only once, then it dies. I wouldn't want to go near a wasps nest.😳
This brings back childhood memories.
I'm really fascinated how they make a Hexagonal shape of the wasps
Thanks for the information ❤
I think wasps are really incredible!
I'm allergic to these MFs stings so I'm still going to burn them down, my mother put even more effort on myself...

Pretty rugged sting they give!
What is a little skunk good for? They love to eat the larva in a underground wasp's nest on cool spring or fall nights. I dont need to call exterminators. I just had to have patience for them to walk under my window that night to clear out the nest on that side of the cottage.
Great video
Once I changed my window air conditioner. I found two empty nests: One was a wasp nest, paper, lightweight, etc. The other was a Mud-dauber nest! (black wasps) It was as heavy as a rock! Obviously, mud is heavier than paper, and the weight difference was HUGE!
Well done

Okay let's bring all the hardworking wasp nests to your home 😂
I have a wasp nest growing on my patio. Not gonna knock it down either. I don't ever bother them so they don't bother me.They're perfect neighbors. I should go out more :D
You have a nice voice. Well done.
Interesting new format, will take some getting used to.
this is so cool
Pretty cool
I have a wasp nest in my compost bin at my allotment. I was working at the plot about 2 feet away from the nest, causing no disturbance to them. One came over to ‘taste’ me - 7 stings in 2 different cluster spots on my leg. That left a massive, itchy red patch for about 10 days, even though I’m currently on antihistamines. It didn’t start going down until I took Ibuprofen (which I’m not allowed to take, for medical reasons). The temptation to destroy the nest is huge… but both my plum tree and all the plum trees on neighbour plots have never had a better crop. And usually the plums are full of insects burrowing into them - not this year for the first time ever. So I’ve bought some sting cream to apply immediately if (when?) I get stung again 😵💫
It's crazy how beautiful nature is, but at the same time idk, the inside of the nest makes my skin crawl 😂
I have that same kitchen knife. Sharp as hell.
@1:42: What were those red-looking wasps? Cool!
Found one in my loft. Only 4 open cells. If wasps don't make honey. Or pollinate flowers. What are they for?
Stinging
I paint on my back patio. Above my head is a nest about 8 inches across. Third year. We have several around our house under the eves. We don't bother them, they don't bother us. And, they keep our garden pest free. If the weather is bad for a couple days I put cat food out for them.
When wasps eat cat food they turn into the cat wasp
Homie unless they gonna pay rent, they're not staying around my house

Nothing but pure evil. Sure they polinate flowers. But they build nest near your house and sting you if you are near their nest. Bees are nice, but Wasps are jerks.
@@kejiri3593 they are protecting their larvae. How is that "evil"? Just a normal instinct to protect their nest. Stop projecting
I once knocked a wasps nest down and dispersed them with water because it was hangin in front of my garage, after that I was really curious to see what was inside of it so i started dissecting it carefully and opened all the cells with a toothpick then I extracted all of the insects and the larvae (at the time I didn’t know they had that form when they’re young) and put all of them in order from the least similar to the most similar to an actual wasp and I was able to see the different stages and transitions from larvae to adult wasps. The last one looked in every way like a mature adult wasp with wings and the color and everything but still it wasn’t able to fly. It was quite interesting to see how much they change throughout their development.
Human : Imma knock 🔻 this danm wasp nest .. Wasp : Now a worthy contender !!
