Yemen: Land of the legendary Queen of Sheba, who met King Solomon in Jerusalem

With film shot during Wendell Phillips’ 1950 expedition and footage of the collection housed in the museum in Sana’a, this documentary is a fascinating insight into a long-gone civilization and a queen who lives on in the cultural memory of her country.

The name of the Queen of Sheba conjures a vision of eastern exoticism. There is no indisputable evidence that she ever existed, though a Bible story tells how she journeyed to Jerusalem, bearing gold and incense, to visit King Solomon and to see for herself whether tales of his great wisdom were true. The people of Yemen remain convinced that the Queen of Sheba is a historical, not a legendary, figure and that she ruled over the ancient kingdom of Saba, now part of their country, which lies in the extreme south of the Arabian peninsula.
In the past fifty years, several foreign archaeological expeditions have sought to discover more about Yemen’s enigmatic past and the Yemenites themselves are now endeavoring to repossess their heritage. The museum of the University of Sana’a, the modern-day capital of Yemen, is assembling a fine collection of artefacts that have been found during excavations around the country. But this largely desert country has been reluctant to yield up its treasures. Several excavation sites which have had to be abandoned have rapidly become covered over once more by sand.

    • Thank you for mentioning the ancient temple of the moon god called Yeha, which reminds me of the The Tetragrammaton, the four-letter Hebrew theonym יהוה‎, usually transliterated YHWH, which people mistranslate to Yahweh or Jehovah by adding extra letters (vowels) to add in between which are not apart of Hebrew. Hebrew doesn't have vowels as part of the alphabet system. In fact, since Hebrew is one of the most ancient languages still spoken around the world, the vowel system was never a part of the Hebrew alphabet. The real pronunciation has been lost over time due to not uttering the holy name due to a fear of accidentally taking God’s name in vain, so the Jews stopped saying it out loud altogether and instead when reading scripture aloud, the Jews substituted the tetragrammaton YHWH with the word Adonai (“Lord”). When the Masoretes added vowel pointings to the text of the Hebrew Bible around the eighth century CE, they gave the word YHWH the vowels of Adonai, to remind the reader to say Adonai instead. Later Biblical scholars mistook this vowel substitution for the actual spelling of YHWH and interpreted the name of God as Jehovah. *Hebrew is read from right to left, as was Himyaritic, the ancient language of Yemen which was also written from right to left. Ancient Brahmi as was Indus script might possibly have been too. Thanks again.

  • The professor is incorrect in that Yemen is not the only Nation that claims Queen Saba as its monarch. It is a bone of contention between Yemen and Ethiopia as we Ethiopians, with a history extending beyond 3000 years also have historical sites that include her palace, similar Sabean writing, plus oral and written history that tells us our Queen travelled to Jerusalem to meet with King Solomon-and later gave birth to a son, Minelik I. Without Minelik 1there would be no Ark of the Covenant in St Mary of Zion's church in Axum. We believe her empire was extensive, based in Axum but extending east, across the red sea to include Yemen and what is now Saudi Arabia, to the west as far as Nigeria. Considering the physical resemblance Yemenis, Ethiopians and the Nubians in Egypt share, I believe we were once part of one great empire presided over by Queen Saba/Makeda.

  • The silly thing is that Saba probably didn't conform at all to the current borders of the area, which were drawn arbitrarily by the British in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is likely that Saba included parts of both Yemen and Ethiopia. Both countries have strong evidence of the presence of the same culture, and to add to it, the Ethiopian kings and emperors can trace their lineage right the way back to Menelik and Solomon. The last of the line was Emperor Haile Salasi who was assassinated not so very many years ago (recently enough that I remember it happening). There must have been some reason for Solomon's decedents to have relocated to Ethiopia. It's unlikely that they'd go there just for fun and giggles. But if it was a part of Saba, it would all make sense. It would also make sense in regard to the Ark of the Covenant, which it is said was spirited away from Jerusalem when the Romans destroyed the second temple, ended up in Ethiopia.

  • This is actually really interesting. Queen Sheba, Saba (Siva/ Lord Siva, a moon god) is said to be from Ethiopia (Cush/Kush), although there's a possibility she's from Yemen. They would cross over from Ethiopia and Sudan (Kingdom of Kush and the Land of Punt region) into South Arabia, Yemen (Saba) and then onto The Near and Middle East and or India, as to why Cush/Kush could probably be the name for both areas, The kingdom of Kush and The HinduKush (from the Cushite, plural Cushites :A member of one of various peoples native to the Horn of Africa) and the Kutchi people are a tribe from India and Pakistan along the Hindu-Kush (Sindhu/Indu/Hindu). Kush is a son of Ham (Ham is one of Noah's three sons) and grandson of Noah, as is Raamah/Ra'ma (as in Lord Rama). Raahma means exalted, father, or thunder in Hebrew and also refers to a mountainous area. And Saba (Siva) is a son of Kush, or Cush. Raamah/Rama was a son of Cush, the eldest son of Ham, who was a son of Noah, the Patriarch of the Flood. Raamah/Rama is usually claimed to be somewhere in the region of Yemen; Sheba was a son of Raamah, and his descendants are often held to be included among the Sabaeans. And then there's the statue of a deity of a goddess named Lady Barat. Bharat is the HinduKush, and what India is now named. There is still a city in Yemen named Barat. Sheba was quite well known in the classical world, and its country was called Arabia Felix "Fertile Arabia" Part of what led to Arabia Felix's wealth and importance to the ancient world was its near monopoly of the trade of cinnamon and other spices, both its native products and imports from India and the Horn of Africa (Cysh/Kush). The term Arabia Felix was the Roman translation of the earlier Greek Hellenistic term Arabia Eudaimon, attributed to Eratosthenes of Cyrene. Felix has the simultaneous meaning of "fecund, fertile" and "happy, fortunate, blessed." The Arabian city of Eudaemon in Arabia Felix was a transshipping port in the Red Sea trade. Eudaemon Arabia was once a full-fledged city, when vessels from India did not go to Egypt and those of Egypt did not dare sail to places further on, but came only this far. Frankincense has been traded on the Arabian Peninsula for more than 5,000 years. Frankincense was also traded from the Horn of Africa during the Silk Road era. Most frankincense comes from the Horn of Africa, and India, but also in Oman, Yemen, and western Africa.

Although, you should find this part of great interest from what you wrote above about the Pandavas. Part of what led to Arabia Felix's wealth and importance to the ancient world was its near monopoly of the trade in cinnamon and spices, both its native products and imports from India and the Horn of Africa. Strabo a Greek geographer, philosopher, historian from modern day Turkey whose life was characterized by extensive travels was quoted saying that "Arabia Felix was composed of five kingdoms, one each of warriors, farmers, "those who engage in the mechanical arts; another, the myrrh-bearing country, and another the frankincense-bearing country, although the same countries produce cassia, cinnamon, and nard."

How about I tell you that the arab ( white skinned)came from north the kingdom of Syria, Israel, Iraq and others down to south and took over Yemen. You can search for ancient maps or books telling about middle east. Oh wait even they say the middle east was called eastern Ethiopia. You see Ethiopian kings and Queens ruled Yemen as part of their kingdom as the people living there were Ethiopians. And as those kings and Queens, Queen sheba ruled Yemen as part of her kingdom. In fact the Ethiopians ruled from southern Egypt to some part of asia. And on ancient paintings she was colored black. Do you know the Philippines also think she is Filipino. hahaha All this proof, do you still believe that she is not Ethiopian?

  • I have often wondered if there was a way to prove or discern whether or not Sheba was from Yemen or Ethiopian. I think it makes sense that Solomon would've found a somewhat distant relative more appealing both from a looks standpoint and a spiritual standpoint, than a far more distant relative in an Ethiopian woman. This may be viewed as complete conjecture on my part, but it is my personal conviction. I am 7 generations removed from my nearest Jewish ancestor and far more attracted to Jewish women or women more closely related to me, than woman who are more distantly related, than either Jewish women or gentile women more closely related to myself. People are more able to relate to someone more like themselves and hold an appreciation of something different, yet with a distinct familiarity they can appreciate, in my opinion. She was more than likely a descendant of one of Abraham's other children, besides Isaac or Ishmael.

The God of this region of Saba, would be located at an auspicious site where one could seek God's favour and protection. Building facades were created on feature rock formations, or grottos created in caves, as a place to worship God. As these generally pre dated Muhammed they are pre Islam. This structure may have served as a site to locate and pray to the God of the region.
