  • The most ironic thing is that if you look at the child's room, there's a pair of dreamcatchers. CLEARLY they didn't work properly.

    • I remember sleeping with a dream catcher exactly once, but my friend threw it away because I spent said night filled with nightmares. Dunno of it was just a coincidence, but it was especially weird since I'm not the type to get dreams at all

  • For those who are confused this is about a boy who actually is a man. Because of a depressed childhood he never actually grew up. And turned to drugs for an escape. The ball, bunny and dog represents the trauma related to his childhood. Events that scared him such as getting bullied, losing his dog, and dropping his bunny. Unable to move on like a kid normally would. The demon is his own depression that keeps holding him back. Every time he try to wake up he is always dragged back in. Through the addiction to drugs. Even at the end where he briefly gains happiness he is always dragged back into the void. Deep down he wants to be helped but is unable to escape. Very deep and sad.

    • I don't think it necessarily has to do with drugs. I think that the man has had a rough life, and cannot cope with traumas. So instead of confronting his issues, he reverts back to a childlike state. He focuses on problems that can be most easily fixed, by obtaining physical things. However, the more complicated problems manifest themselves in the form of monsters throughout the game. Anytime they get the better of him, the childlike version dies and the cycle repeats itself. However, because he never confronts the actual root of his pain, the happiness is shallow and the trauma remains in the form of monstrous beasts. The child is forced to be stuck in the world of monsters with a shallow smile hiding the fear and suffering he is forced to endure.

  • For those of you who are wondering what the ending means. The little flashbacks from the main character when he has hair are the origin stories. He was bullied, lost his dog, and other things. At 32:54, we see the kid as a grown man, lying on the ground and what appears to be drugs lying around him. This means that he was taking drugs to cope because he never got over his past. It would explain the happy moments as well as the scary moments. The smiling entity could be a symbol for each dose that this person took. The ending for when he was lying on the ground and a red creature popping out of him is representing his soul leaving his body, because he overdosed. I do think that Happy Game has a strong message to show that doing drugs to cope with trauma can have serious consequences. Edit: If anyone is wondering, yes this is what SuperHorrorBro has theorized. Be sure to check his videos out. Edit 2: Thanks for the likes, I didn't think this would get decently popular. 😱😀👍 Edit 3: It's crazy that this comment is the most popular, thank you for liking my comment. 😱😀

    • I thought the same as well. I also think it symbolized what it was like when he was a child. It basically puts you into the mind of a child going through a really fucked up family situation / childhood trauma, because in the game the parents were "never there." So how Mark and other players didn't know what was going on in the game, is how a child would feel going through things like that, everything being fucked up but not realizing things are messed up because you are too young to understand.

  • I think the scene with him being eaten by the antler people, is actually a metaphorical moment when the kid tried to bully and behave like one in order to not be the bullied anymore (by putting the bully’s head) But after seeing what they do he literally SEES himself being « eaten » he can’t do it. I also think the rocks smiling evily implies that he was used to have rocks thrown at him… Sad TT

    • My interpretation is something like that. It even dates back to when that tall thing picked up the dog and then got struck by lightning a number of times. The thing kept leaning towards the kid with a scary face, and at some point, the kid grabbed onto their tooth and then pulled it out. I believe that it's meant to symbolize that someone bullied his dog when he was young, he tried to stop them and the bully tried to scare him off, until the kid had enough and punched them hard enough to knock out their tooth. The thing then being stuck in a cage afterwards... I imagine it means that something happened to the bully once people found out about it, maybe that the bully got grounded, so they were stuck looking out the window, watching the kid play happily with his dog. And as for the antler people, yes, I do believe they too symbolize bullies, and the kid putting on one of their heads means that he tried to act like a bully himself, to try to make sure he doesn't get bullied anymore. But instead, the bullies were like "oh, you wanna act mean like us? Okay, then, how about you join us?", and because it made the kid feel like he had friends for the first time, he agreed. The bullies then surrounding the kid and eating him... I don't believe that kid is the protagonist of this game. I think that kid was just some other random child, and when the (protagonist) kid saw how the other bullies treated the child, it reminded him of when he himself was being bullied, and now he was seeing it through the bullies' point of view and saw how horrible it was, and he couldn't go through with bullying the child. When it's over and the child was devoured, the bullies ran off, though one of them gestured to the remains of the child, as if to say "here, you want some?" to the (protagonist) kid. As soon as the bully ran off, though, the kid removed the bully mask and tossed it away, symbolizing that after seeing them abuse that random child, he didn't want to be mean like them and decided that violence wasn't going to fix things for him. At least, that's what I think.

Yet because of the lore/story in this game, if you think about it, it’s actually kinda sad But even so, at 16:33 that slow mo animation were the kid slowly being eaten is terrifying. But it also makes me wonder why the others didn’t attack the kid in the first place. But it’s also interesting because at the end of the cut scene, one of the creatures offered the disguised kid a bit. Making a small gesture as if to say “do you want some too?”

  • One of my favorite quotes is “art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable” (Cesar Cruz), and boy did this masterpiece do that. 30:36 my interpretation of this scene is that every disfigured head represents people in his life. The paper smiles go over their faces to mask how they really feel. As the people are pretending to be happy and be okay, they’re telling him to “stick to the status quo”, as represented by the shock. This essentially tortures him, because he knows everyone is unhappy but they refuse to show it, and he doesn’t want to do that too. Then maybe as they get pulled away and break apart, that’s him losing connection with these people and essentially shutting them out. In the end, he’s left with himself, as seen in the next scene. The problem is that when you’re left alone with yourself for too long, nothing good comes from it. He dwells on his past trauma so much that he gets stuck in it, until he eventually overdoses. The part that ends as the boy waking up is what he always wished had happened, but the boy waking up to a nice day was the real dream. I wish I had the attention span to interpret the entire thing in words, but alas, I do not. I can say that this story has so many incredible elements in it. Kudos to the developers for creating this masterpiece.

  • I finally realized how familiar the antagonist is, it's basically the King Worm from Adventure Time! The King Worm even had spotlight eyes aiming at Finn at one point. The gameplay is so fascinating to me because it seems to be a recreation and corruption of the way children explore their world for the first time. As the player, you aren't given any verbal or written instructions. The absence of dialogue only furthers the experience as one of raw emotion, you're not told what to feel, you just feel it. You don't even know what it is, and you just experience it. You experiment with everything, pulling and pushing, often in destructive or unintentionally violent ways, like a very curious young child. It's undeniable things get harmed in your way whether you intend them to or not. Every change in color and noise captures your attention because they're new, often terrifying; you're put in a position to pay attention to everything minute, as though you were an easily entertained infant, in order to progress the game. It's the primal fear of the unknown but not with a void or nothingness, but with an new world functioning by foreign rules that you're trying desperately to learn about, like what happens after you're born. The style of the game is like the epitome of surreal horror and dark surrealism, in the likes of the Grinch's Paraphernalia/Dr. Seuss's darker works, Pink Elephants on Parade, and the more menacing aspects of Salvador Dali's work. Just a very interesting design, I love the developmental choices.

  • I think why this game is so disturbing more than others is probably because the main creator or the person who came up with the idea of this game went through serious childhood trauma. Like abuse, emotional instability, and other things. Cause I have been through shit like that, and the game is so unnerving yet relatable if you have gone through things like that. Like the experience of the game gives you that. You are playing as a child, and the child as well as the player has no idea what's going on (Like how a child with a really fucked up family situation wouldn't know until they were older what was going on.) It's puts you into the mind of a really messed up child going through trauma.

    @laylonlee229@laylonlee2292 жыл бұрын
    • Oh now I completely understand the meaning of the game. The game is confusing and terrifying because thats exactly what a child's perspective is if they are going through trauma.

  • My analysis of the game: The Smiley Demon is not actually malevolent, it is trying to help him. In every nightmare we see the boy lose something (the ball getting stolen, the bunny dropped in the lake, the dog running away) and every time the Demon sees the boy's sadness and nods to the player as if to say 'Alright, let's deal with this.' That is why, whenever he wakes up, he has the thing back he lost. And then the Demon gently lulls him back to sleep so it can find more trauma to fix. The three chapters each seem to be about certain uncomfortable issues. I don't know what chapter 3 is about, but I have a pretty good idea about 1 and 2. The first chapter seems to be about sensory overload. You will notice, even though all the toys tend to look scary and menacing, he doesn't actually seem scared of them most of the time. It is only when they all start making flashing lights and cacaphonous noises that the kid starts to panic, or when they are actively trying to attack him. It is also when the noises are loudest that he gets his recurring visions of being impaled. The chapter ends with him finding his ball, a toy that is neither loud, nor flashy, making it the antithesis of all the other toys in his dream, and he tellingly manages to narrowly avoid his promised impalement by grabbing the ball and waking up once he has it, showing that the ball is safe for him, as opposed to the torturous overload of the other toys. The second chapter can best be described to be about gluckschmerz (deriving pain or discomfort from other peoples' happiness). Throughout the entire chapter, the denizens of the smiley bunny land are either trying to punish you for being happy, or are themselves getting punished for their happiness. You try to feed the bunnies to make them happy, only for the monster bunny to devour them. You actively have to make many of the heart children unhappy to the point of death to survive the third bunny monster. The smiley part has an angry smiley that kills anyone that tries to pass while being happy, and in the end, in order to pass, you have to make him happy, only to make him sad again. And the end of chapter 2 has you rob the happiness of the three smiley heads and literally break their hearts. The puddle sees you rip him apart and mess with his insides, the fire bunny has you kill the tiny imps for his pleasure, only to burn him, and then dismantle his skeleton when he tries to protect himself. And the sawbox has you stop the smiley from enjoying his sadistic experiments on the bunnies, only for the bunnies to turn out just as sadistic as him. The third chapter, I couldn't really find a coherent theme in the events. Possibly something about how nature is scary, or about bullying and wanton cruelty from the denizens of the dream, but really, that all feels like a reach in a way my other chapter interpretations do not. However, the end portion of the chapter feels like their own seperate theme from whatever the rest of the chapter tried to convey. He reunites with the dog, but where he would ordinarily wake up, as with chapter 1 and 2, this time the dog is taken away again, into the red void. He follows, and ends up falling endlessly among broken, mangled versions of his own visage, ending with popping open his head to find pictures of his ball, bunny, and dog. That's when you rewind the whole thing into a maelstrom of bits and pieces from all three dreams, and then wake up to find your ball, bunny, and dog safe and sound. And that is also where we get the twis ending of the boy being a grown man, lying drugged up in a puddle of his own fluids. That whole bit seems to just be about the grim reality that the happiness that the Smiley Demon brought him is all in his head, a junkie's pipedream. The broken visages of himself shows the truth of him being a broken individual, the drawings of his things are depictions of his happy memories. And the ending where he pounds on the window and draws a smiley face seem to imply that he is trapped in his own misery and pursuit of his childhood innocence. The fact that the smiley drawing flashes into the Smiley Demon for a moment also implies that the Demon is, indeed, his own creation. A small piece of his mind that tirelessly attempts to fix himself, even though he is irrevocably broken. But those are just my thoughts. If you have any other ideas, it would be cool to hear them, and I am especially curious if anyone has an idea of what chapter 3 could symbolize that is in line with my theories.

    • Funny enough, I heard something similar in a different comment section. The main difference was the entity being something old and eldritch and its trying to find happiness in his life. Problem is, he has a sick sense of feeling and prefers happiness now and sadness later, then the cycle keeps going. Eventually it all ends and he's stuck in a box to never experience sadness again.

  • Perhaps that's why it's called "Happy Game" is that the kid who never grew out of the dark demons from his past, just wanted to desperately to be happy. He tried so hard to remember all the good things from his life such as the bunny, ball, and his dog. Yet throughout the game, his darkness keeps taking it all away from him. The end part where it showed an older version of the kid laying around, feels to me that he commited suicide since that red soul left his body. Maybe this is what the people who took their own life felt and see before it all ended. They tried and tried but to some people the demons and darkness is just too extreme :( such as the way the graphics was presented in the game. I know that even if I hope and pray everyone will overcome their hurt, trauma and darkness, there are still those who just can't. But still as someone who overcomed my own demons, I hope you can too.

  • I like to think that the child in this game is a victim to a serial murderer and cannibal. The happy face is their calling card. The child was brutally murdered and the serial killer dismembered and stuffed his bodies into his toys. He then ate any other part of the child's body. The game is the child's last dying moments, or purgatory. The mask of his killer is the enemy and pursues him in the afterlife, perhaps after the killers gets the chair. Some murderers say that even in the afterlife, their victims will be tormented by them Others say the collect slaves for the afterlife by murdering people. That was just my perspective on what the game was about.
