  • As eoow on large gas ships your engine rooms (on yachts) are always beautiful looking spaces. A little quicker to do a round but I might miss having the space to work freely. Having watched your videos for a while all I can say is thanks for another amazingly well shot one, love the editing work, you can see how much it's developed over the channel's history!

Also given the amount of automation in the civil maritime sector (yachts, cruise ships, and merchants) engineers seem more like maintenance crew than operators. This is in comparison to naval warships....and in no way meant to diminish their importance. As Ken said, things have to work for the guests onboard, ALL THE TIME!! Great video tour Jared!

    • It is more efficient to polish a little every single day, than to wait for a lot of dirt or salt to build up and then have to vigorously polish it. Cleaning yachts are like keeping sports cars clean. But the difference being that the yacht is exposed to saltwater practically every moment. So best to keep on top of things.

    • Hi Michael. Try to imagine it from my perspective. Being able to travel the world, filming yachts, focusing on telling a range of stories on different yachts in different locations, rather than being able to squeeze in an after hours vlog edit and spending most of my day blading windows, polishing stainless etc. I loved what I did when I did it but with no desire to be captain, id rather focus on doing what I love ( film and photo) within one of my favourite industries in the world ( yachting ) than be crew 95% of the time. I will still vlog trips and assist crew but my focus from here on out is a wide range of yachting story telling.

    @skiingfast1@skiingfast12 жыл бұрын
    • It depends on the year. Because most yacht management companies require a 5-year service, then a 10-year and so on. So once every couple of years you are in the yard for a major service and repairs that do not normally happen. So your charter schedule is only annual for maybe 4 years at a time with the fifth year being more of a yard year potentially. Depends on how crazy with upgrades you want to go with in the yard.

  • Does this yacht have a crew chef? I imagine that since they have 3 engineers, probably 3 stewardess and 3 or 4 deckhands, captain and probably a first and second officer , that's 13 or 14 crew so I imagine there is a crew chef unless the chef also cooks for the crew.

    @clifbradley@clifbradley2 жыл бұрын
    • A yacht of this size will have a crew chef or a stew/chef or deck/chef that takes care of crew food. The crew chef will help with the main chef every day as well in addition to keeping the kitchen clean. Main chef will handle fancy food for guests, designing menus, as as well as food selection and provisioning. This yacht likely has a provision outfit on retainer as well. I would just guess that this yacht has 2 chefs and maybe a stew/chef with 20 crew.

      @Howard.Stern.@Howard.Stern.2 жыл бұрын
    • @@Howard.Stern. I would think so. When I crewed on yachts, this was the case. I don't things have changed that much since I left yachting. I just didn't see or hear anything mentioned about the crew chef. Since these are all rotational crew, I imagine the crew chef is a short term seasonal hire. That's how it was on the last boat I was on. Rotation was just getting introduced into yachting and one of the first to request it was chef's who got burned out cooking constantly on smaller boats where they had to cook for guest and crew. But I've seen chef's that cooked for 10-12 guests and 8-12 crew before too. They usually pulled in someone to help with prep and assisting, but that's a big job. I used to do that and I loved it. We moved fast and turned out some awesome meals. Makes you feel good.

      @clifbradley@clifbradley2 жыл бұрын
    • @@clifbradley I looked up the current crew. Looks like 2 chefs, one main one crew, and an off boat provisioner. Plus the stews can likely help with certain things in the galley.

      @Howard.Stern.@Howard.Stern.2 жыл бұрын
    • @@Howard.Stern. You have different provisioners. I looked up the boat and there is a head chef and a sous chef. I didn't see anything about an off-site provisioner. P.lus that wouldn't make sense. Every port you visited has it's own provisioners. Sometimes you have multiple provisioners because one company only handles dry goods and not meat. So you have sometimes multiple provisioners coming to deliver stuff, or you go and pick it up off the dock. Sometimes you have to have them come to you offshore for a last minute request. You wouldn't have your own provisioner. I also don't think they pull in stews to help. I read their resumes and these guys can cook and have experience for over a decade working on yachts. I don't know, maybe you read an old article or something but I looked up the ship's page and I went into the charter catalog using my old credentials and the boats web page for a crew manifest matches the charter book which is highly detailed. I didn't see a provisioner listed. Surprisingly, no purser either. Oh well. They have 2 chief stewardess', a lead stewardess and a second stew and 4 regular stews with other skills. So the interior management, the captain and deck officers all are rotational. That means this boat makes serious money. 💵 💵 💰 🤑 💸

    • How is that not possible? 10m3 a day when underway would be fairly economical by most standards

      @nuclearbeaver96@nuclearbeaver962 жыл бұрын
    • The ship weighs 1,620 mT, that's a lot of mass to move plus they have to provide power via diesel generators for what is basically a floating mansion. For comparison, a Bering 65 which can't go anywhere near as fast and only weighs 102 mT has a fuel consumption of over 2,000 liters per day and it's also considered to be fuel efficient for its size. For reference to a "fast" boat that is trying to be economical by going slow, an example would be the Marlow Explorer 61E(33 mT); it would burn 2,400 liters per day and if it got up on plan then you could easily double that. At top speed(27 knots) its fuel consumption is about 480 liters per hour and it would completely drain it's fuel tanks in a mere 14 hours.

      @Jack-yl7cc@Jack-yl7cc2 жыл бұрын
