CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Thorin (Richard Armitage) rallies his troops and heads into battle.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Peter Jackson takes cues from the appendices of The Lord of the Rings to expand New Line Cinema's Hobbit adaptation with this third film completing the epic tale of Bilbo Baggins, as played by Martin Freeman. The story opens to find the vengeful dragon Smaug (voice of Benedict Cumberbatch) decimating the peaceful hamlet of Laketown as Bilbo, Thorin (Richard Armitage) and the rest of the dwarves lay claim to the Lonely Mountain. But their celebration is short-lived as Thorin grows obsessed with finding the Arkenstone. Meanwhile, Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) Elrond (Hugo Weaving) and Saruman (Christopher Lee) battle the Nazgul in an attempt to free Gandalf (Ian McKellen), and get some unexpected help from eccentric wizard Radagast (Sylvester McCoy). Unfortunately for all involved the struggle has only just begun, because as armies of dwarves, elves, orcs, humans and goblins converge at the base of the Lonely Mountain, the fight for the future of Middle Earth begins.

Dwarves before battle: Put on suits of awesome Dwarf armor. Dwarves during battle: Take it all off.
It was meant to be metaphorical.
@Tyler Onorato The book version of the battle is short, but magnificent. The movie version is absolute trash. But yes, in the books they kept their armor on, and though I don't have the exact line handy, it was something about them wearing the finest of armors, and weapons. Oh, and there wasn't a stupid cliff top signpost thing.
It was also because of the actors being not able to move freely because of the armor. PJ wanted to shoot this battle scene with the armors they were wearing prior, but had to scrap it because the actors found the armor limiting their movement. Similar to how they scrapped the idea of B. Connolly being actually sporting prosthetics for his Dain look.
Yeah in the bts extras they described how the armour was too heavy and restricting to the actors, so they decided to make it a symbolic thing. The dwarves left their fancy armour off in the charge to shed the pomp and circumstance and join their brothers in battle. Not all will agree with the filmmakers choice, but you can’t deny seeing this triangle charge in the trailer and being able to instantly see their faces clearly added to the epic ness

That is someone I can call king and fight and die for
I actually remember this feeling from an MMORPG battle. There were like 50 people on both sides, we were to meet. Both parties were at the sight range. But noone was daring to do the first step... there was an occasional shot from one or the other side. But as we were all on TeamSpeak, our leader at one point shouted at us "EVERYONE! MOVE!" and that did it, we started to run at the enemy... Yeah, it was just an online game, but it was a powerful feeling for me [which wasn't repeated]! (that was Lineage2; Castle siege)

In the past few minutes, the army of Dwarves were spent, both in morale and number. But, the moment Thorin charges to battle, everyone was like getting their adrenaline injection. "To the King!" indeed...
Well these dwarves are as tough as they come.
Its showing how a symbol or something you believe in can cause people to rally and persevere. You can be tired or scared but then that "thing" whatever it may be appears and this is usually the outcome.
@@darthraider7935 A man dying for something they believe in is more dangerous than anything. Or in this case a dwarf.
Plus he came out running straight at the enemy no fear no concerns, that would’ve been very uplifting
And for some reason they got reinforcements in the form of other dwarves carrying banners.
I just love how the dwarves loyalty to Thorin was never in question and that they would always stand by his side
It’s their hearts and the power of this scene when they’re running out. It may be their last time but they will go down with honor and fight. People can say what they want but movies still try to bring this type of emotions that these movies, and LOTR had brought. It’s no as easy as people think. 💕
1:22 There. Right there is when you realize.... The morale of a few hundred can take down the fear of a thousand
Or you relalize that he forgot to hold a shield on that record..... xd
Yeah... No it cant
The morale is really important in a battle. It reminds me a history class. In Alesia, the roman legions were completely outnumbered and surrounded by gauls. They were about to lose the battle. But at the last moment, Julius Caesar showed up riding his horse, attacking the enemy. The romans got motivated and finally they were able to destroy the barbarian army.

the moment where that bell breaks the stone wall is epic, majestic.
the horn gets me every time. it is not just a simple callback to the epic helm's deep last stand, it is not just a rallying cry to let the enemy know they have not given up. it is that it is the first time in hundreds of years that the horn of erebor sounded, proclaiming dwarven dominion over the mountain, and the last stand of those whom have given their all to reclaim their family home. the horn ushers in the dawning of a new era as well as sounding the last hurrah of those willing to make way for the future.
I get chills when all the dwarves rally out of the mountain, and the dwarvish chanting in the soundtrack starts. VERY underrated and entertaining group of films, especially this one!

It's funny how 13 dwarves can change the entire course of a battle. But that indicates their strength, importance and willpower.
That was the royal Dwarf Family charging in Thorin, Fili, Kili, Dain, Balin, Dwalin, Oin and Gloin are legitimate Heirs to the Throne of Durin and are all famous, so the Dwarf Army of course got morale boost seeing that nearly all legitimate Throne Heirs and Members of the Royal Line of Durin fight with them! Well the Rohirrim charge over the fields are far better but this one is 2nd that's true
If you are wondering why Thorin didn't keep his armor on its because in a way it represented his corrupted mind and soul, his cruelty and sickness was shown through it and once he took that armor off he was cleansed of all corruption. In the books he kept it one but in the film when you see him walk to his companions in the hall with the light behind him it showed he was no longer a cruel king in armor but a Dwarf of honor showing his true courage and love for his followers
When a noble king leads his troops the rest follow him and help break the waves of enemies. That is what makes a great king and leader!

The Hobbit movies made many, MANY mistakes and all 3 had their bad moments. But like a disgraced King rallying for one last charge; this scene and the Battle of Azanulbizar showed Peter Jackson’s still got it.
