    • JohnnyQ90 Is love me one for my desk but I see it always boils over. Is there a way to seal or stop that?

      @vaiojoe@vaiojoe6 жыл бұрын
    • vaiojoe the boil is too harsh, just lower the wick for a smaller flame. You will still boil the water just not such a hard boil

      @davew6998@davew69986 жыл бұрын
    • Dave Oh My main concern was at the threads. The relief valve doesn’t seem to give off much.

      @vaiojoe@vaiojoe6 жыл бұрын
    • vaiojoe watch the video again the water isn't coming from the thread it spilled over from the piston side. if you have a bigger air gap above the water it won't over boil up into the piston, or have a smaller flame. you need to balance the flame to the boiler size, you wouldn't run this engine with a blowtorch.

  • Steam engines have incredible torque for the size compared to combustion as the simply build more steam pressure if it stalls.. The slower it goes due to load the more torque it outputs.

    • What you are suggesting is called a "condenser". It's essentially a big cooling tank into which the engine exhausts. The steam condenses (hence the name) and turns into water that can be pumped back into the boiler. This way you lose very little water and can go a looooong time on a single filling ;)

      @brassandbricks7701@brassandbricks77014 жыл бұрын
    • Such a thing exists. Unfortunately, since nothing is 100% efficient, water being heated, used, and cooled repeatedly would not work forever.

      @JamesWillmus@JamesWillmus4 жыл бұрын
    • with a truly gas-tight seal, a condenser and a small pump of sorts the water would not need to be refilled basically ever. the energy comes from the fuel, so it's not like it would break the laws of thermodynamics. the problem would actually be not creating a water hammer due to the extremely low pressure zone you'd be creating because of it

      @alnoso@alnoso4 жыл бұрын
  • That's cool. Now if you were able to make a condenser and feed the water back into the boiler, you be able to run it so long as you can keep the fire going.

  • Do you think 'modern steam' has a future in residential/camp sized engines that use multi-fuels? The Stirling engines don't have much torque, but the modern materials available now make the neat little models more scale-able. It seems like commercially available steam engines have always been either huge or small models. The technology could be up graded for practical off grid use.

    • What you suggesting is something that every nuclear powerplant does. Because you do generate entropie (not usable energie) when converting heat energie into electricity. You have to transfer the entropie out of the system by cooling the exhaust gas down to a liquid. Then you can reheat it and re use it.

      @mandernachluca3774@mandernachluca37746 жыл бұрын
    • This would also increase its power because of the created low pressure zone by condensation. Bringing the water back to the same reservoir might not be possible since it's under pressure.

    @harryvanhoo7235@harryvanhoo72354 жыл бұрын
  • I bet if you soldered brass tube around the reservoir, and then wrapped the tube section in a firesafe insullation layer, the tubing would improve heat transfer into the reservoir by giving more contact area and forcing the hot air to remain in contact along the length without mixing cold air in. With more of the flame's heat captured I'd expect faster steam production which should make it stronger, though might not have a huge impact on top speed.

Also, Stirling engine uses no water and operates at a MUCH lower RPM.. so, no, this is NOT another kind of Stirling engine as it also produces MUCH more power than a Stirling engine of anywhere NEAR the same size. The steam engine came first anyway.

  • I wonder if you could power a small RC plane with this somehow? If not, I'm sure it would at least be enough to run a toy boat. Even 2.5 minutes of run time isn't that horrible for an RC toy, if you couldn't find enough room for your extended boiler, and no lithium batteries forcing you to cool your heels for half an hour of charging after each run; just fill it back up with water, fill up your little alcohol lamp (although I suppose it would probably work better with another flame source, such as one of those cooking torches chefs use to caramelize stuff, which would last a lot longer so probably not need to be refueled) and away you go.
