Unlike other wooden combination lock you can find on youtube, this model uses only the input disc to lock/unlock the mechanism, without additional lever that should be moved once the combination is set. This is exactly the mechanism you can find in a safe. In the same way, it's not possible to unlock the mechanism if you don't know the combination!
I developed the original scheme found on internet with 3D Sketchup. The result is converted into code for my homemade cnc machine.
Free drawings for the project are available at:

I love the mechanism that retracts the bolt without even having to move a lever after dialing the combination. All you need to do is: -Turn the dial clockwise 4 revolution, and then stop on the first digit. -Turn the dial two times counterclockwise and stop at the second digit. -Turn the dial one full turn and stop at the third digit. -Turn the dial clockwise until it stuck to retract the bolt.
Yes the mechanism
FINALLY, a video I actually want to see about combination locks, I have a safe that has a combination lock like the one you showed, where there are no handles, so I was. Just curious of how they made these and how these work, thanks much love
Hi, it's the same for me, I was curious to know how the combination work and understand if is possible to unlock the mechanism only by earing the noise during the wheel rotation. The answer is: it's not possible because the lever touch the wheels only for a small angle during the rotation so you can't detect the hole position in the three wheels!!! The only solution is to spend a lot of time trying thousand and thousand of combinations!
Cool lock! I love the idea of the combination opening the bolt without needing to move a lever. I also love what you did with the dial, it kinda reminds me of an old fashioned telephone! Great craftsmanship!
+Ethan MacLeod Thank you! This mechanism is exactly what you find in a safe. If you notice in the video, the lever touch the combination disks only within a small angle of rotation. The other mechanisms that use the manual lever are unsafe for the following reason: if during the rotation of the input disk you give a slight pressure on the lever, you can easily feel and find the holes in each disks and discover the secret combination! This is not possible if you use only the combination disk as input...
+Marco Nidi Very well done! I never thought of the lever causing any problems, but there you go!
Ethan MacLeod
Yes?
Marco Nidi you put false gates
Thank you Marco - appreciate the help.
Marco this is awesome! Do you happen to have plans in pdf format? I'd like to try to make this by hand (instead of inputting the code into a CNC).
¡FELICITACIONES MARCO NIDI! --- Esto es de mi gran atención.
This is gorgeous, Marco! As soon as I've finished building my garage, I'm going to use this design, in acrylic and aluminium, to lock the back door. Thanks for sharing it!
I'm happy to share an idea with other people and I hope that everyone can improve my drawing! :)

Це дуже важливо та цікаво, дякую вам за працю, хай щастить
Neat idea and clearly demonstrated. I read your answer to Mr. Docken below regarding the shaft and bushings and understand how each wheel spins freely, and how the combination can be changed. What I am having difficulty understanding is how each wheel stays in place once you dial in its combination. Are the bushings simply a snug fit or is there another explanation? Also, what is the logic behind 12 holes in the combination wheels and 7 holes in the pawl wheel? Are these simply arbitrary or is there another reason, such as 12 holes correspond to 60 minutes of arc like the hours on a clock face? Will any other number of holes work? Say 10 & 5?
Hi Frank, first of all the the holes in the pawl wheel. They are completely arbitrary, I wanted only to have the chance to set the combination and any other number of holes will work! Concerning how the wheel stays in place, the reason is simply that they are separated from each others by a small wood disk. There are 4 of these discs that are locked on the aluminium tube with outer diameter 6 mm. Each wheel is completely free to move around this tube. When you dial the combination you don't move this tube, but the 3 mm. rod that is inside and connected to the smallest disc! I hope my description and my english are enough comprehensible for you....
very smart, I love it
Where can i have a plans??
This is the best design of all the combo locks I've seen. I'm going to try to make one off the pictures as my computer won't open your download files. Wish me luck.
I hope you can achieve the goal :) How can I help you?
Let me give it a try from the pictures and when I hit a wall I'll ask you what to do. My only quick question without having started the project is it looks like there are two different size metal rods. Is it just one rod shown from two sides?
Yes it's correct. There is an aluminum rod with diameter 3 mm. which is inserted inside an aluminum tube with internal diameter of 3 mm and outer diameter 6 mm. The internal aluminium rod is connected from one side to the input combination disk and from the other side to the smallest disk. When you rotate the input combination disk you also rotate the smallest disk. The others three discs are free to rotate independently of each other around the aluminum tube with a diameter of 6 mm. The movement is transmitted from one disk to another through the pins positioned on the disks. The position of these pins on each disk is the numerical combination. I hope I was clear in my explanation.
Very clear in your explanation! That indeed is something I would have needed to know. Thank you very much for your fast response. Everything else looks pretty straight forward at this point, the building will tell the story. Getting the smaller wheel, hook lever and hook stop to size may take a few tries, but it is very visible in your video. Thanks again.
Excellent job
Nice! Is there a place like thingiverse for cnc ?
dude You are from a total diferent planet than mine. incredible, respect

how do you made it .very nice .

Mind = Blown Now i know how safes work.
Very cool!
Thanks at you design
Very cool.
similar to that of a school locker, except the locking pin (the output) is spring loaded, and it is self-clearing

Great. What kind of plywood are the drawings for? Thickness? Thanks.
Excellent

great system
ASMR sounds !!!
Nice info....
the advantage of this mechanism is that this doesnot give a click sound on correct number. very well designed
yes, of course, this is why the mechanism is difficult to unlock... Thank's!
I've found great handbook on woodprix website. Good solutions for everyone I think
Search “woodprix is a scam” and you will learn about how the site resells other creator’s content without permission or recognition of original source. Don’t buy from woodprix.
@@remlya I have already bought it and I can say one thing. These plans are simply fantastic and I know now that in the future they will help me a lot in my passion and my work. Best wishes
stupendo!
You said " This is exactly the mechanism you can find in a safe. In the same way, it's not possible to unlock the mechanism if you don't know the combination!" Partial true, it is a very good copy of a safe lock, but safe locks are very easily manipulated. Depending on the manufacture and how well it is built. Slop equals the ability to manipulate. Even better safes keep the fence from contacting the wheel making it so it can not be read. But I really like your work.
yes, I'm not a thief but I think there are algorithms that allow you to drastically reduce the number of attempts to guess the combination ... I'm glad you like my job, thank you!
DWG?
When is the website coming up?

where is the sketch and dimensions please of every part ?! is there any 3d software model?
Yes of course, see the link to the 3d Sketchup that is in the notes under the video...
too cool

Great
Interesting and very well crafted. At first I thought you could probably guess a number of the combo by the sound, but now I don't think so.
in fact, it is not possible to guess the combination by listening to the noise during the rotation of the disks ... this is exactly what happens in a real safe!
I like it
Гениально и в тоже время всё очень просто!
Thank you !

Пацан красавчик!!!!
People in middle age would be proud of you, but it's a nice wood artwork and awesome precision. Nexttime a Wooden Fingerprintsensor would be futuristic. 🤪
What is that dark spot on the locking arm? a metal weight of sorts maybe?
yes, it's made of lead and the main purpose is to set down the lever...
extremely clever I love the only control is the input disc any chance of a pdf to help me have a go at making it myself WELL DONE
Hi, you can download some pdf files at my website: www.marconidi.altervista.org/ Enter into "combination lock" page and at the end you can see some links to the files.... enjoy!
Very Nice, is ist possible to get a dxf file?
Hi, the project is available in Sketchup file at the following link: 3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model/u0f1f8af5-7ed4-47e9-92ff-dcc93cad434d/Wooden-combination-lock I don't have the dxf file but it's easy to convert... Marco.

What makes the three large wheels desync when clearing it out?
558 / 5000 Risultati della traduzione Hi, I hope to understand your question well ... The three combination discs are free to rotate around their own axis and at first you have to "reset" the mechanism before starting to enter the numbers of the combination. Turning the number disc to the left at least three times ensures that all three internal discs are engaged. The coupling between one disk and another occurs when during the rotation of a disk the small pin, that is between one disk and another, meets and drags the next disk ... I hope I have satisfied you!
@@marconidi3128 oh, they rotate freely. Thank you!
Dear Marco, I am thinking to the appartment door of an elderly person accessed by the different people, nurse, doctor, family, cleaner, that take care of her. Let's say you let the key on the door lock, you insert it in a cylinder like handle, you turn clockwise and backward the handle according to a combination list. Then set the handle hold the key inside to open the door. Do you think this can be designed by modifying your proposal.
Hi Paul, I think the better solution is to is to replace the door lock with a combination electric lock, where the code is entered via a numeric keypad ... On eBay it is easy to find these electric locks that replace the door handle. My mechanism is actually exactly what is used in safes but I find it impractical if a person has to open a door in emergency very quickly ...
Definetly lectric lock can't work in case of fire where the firemen switch on the power supply. kzhead.info/sun/nd5rh7qLpoN4q4U/bejne.html
