I can believe that the W123 is stock because decades ago I had one and would occasionally plant it... was always very surprised and impressed with it. Still miss that car, even today.

I used to own a 1972 280E one of the hand made models with 190BHP standard with just a pod filter and it sounded amazing. lots of wheel spin too. :) I also had a 1982 Euros SPEC 280SE with KNN sports filter and modified Exhaust system also sounded grate and was a good wheel spinner. Very underrated 6 cylinder engines. Bomb proof, built like bricks. I will always love the older 280 engines.

@vangestelwijnen a 6 or 7 speed transmission would greatly improve your acceleration by keeping you in your high rpm powerband. it would also increase in-gear tq multiplication.

Actually, no mods were used on m110 to improve performance. However, the w123 was completely rebuild from original MB parts.

Was the 280 modified with hardened valve seats, or is it using LRP/fuel additives?

@03basesedan The M110 needs high revs to perform. Any change of gear means loosing the ideal moment to perform. 4 gear manual is imho the best gearbox if you want to go fast. I've had two 280E's with 4 manual and they both excelled above 140km/h compared to modern cars, due to the 'long' 4th gear.

no it was not. It had recently replaced engine. However, without any modification.

@Birdlova its a 12V :) i thaugt too that it is a 24V but i looked the W123 Book from merc. an its a 12V .... 2 camshafts but just 12 valves :) but one thing is anoying about the engine ... it doesnt put out ANY power under 4000rpm i have one my own :)

Yea it's surprising that the 2.8 M110.981 engine of the W123 is actually higher in HP than the newer M103 3.0 engine in the predecessor chassis W124. Of course earlier versions of the M110 has much less HP.

DaytonCarCare No, the earlier version W115 has the same power output. The low compression units are the less powerful ones

M110 is extremely reliable and strong, but it does need some attention now and then. With 4-gear manual you really can outperform more modern, stronger cars with 6/7 gears....
