Gremlins Too the New Batch! The '80s loved using various version of "two," and even if they didn't technically this time...I did! Yayyy. Thanks for a great year!

    • This actually makes doing Gremlins in modern day all the more appealing. Can you imagine how much sheer joy they'd have from trashing modern tech? ...on the other hand our modern tech isn't as fun to play with since it's all minimized, smaller and with less wires and such to play with. Hmm.

  • I absolutely adore this movie. All-time fave. No notes. Although in particular, I love its structure. It's 100 minutes of nonstop escalation with no downtime. 10 minutes from the end, and it's STILL throwing new wacky ideas at the screen. It's hard to think of another big-budget Hollywood movie with *this much* creativity oozing from its every frame.

  • Gremlins 2 is the best! It was so nice to see Zach Galligan reprise his role as Billy! In fact one of my favorite parts of Gremlins 2 is when Murray dumps cement on the bat-Gremlin and he turns into a gargoyle. And of course there's also the part where Kate finds Marla caught in one of the Spider-Gremlins webs and Kate almost leaves her after finding out that she flirted with Billy.

  • Yes, "Goober's" name is confirmed to be Daffy (the other two that were mogwai are George and Lenny). Also, there's a theory that mogwai and gremlins have a hierarchy with an alpha, and those with stripes/mohawks are the alphas (making them more aggressive), which is why no others are born when there's already an alpha. And fun fact, gremlins are confirmed to be aliens in the novel, and yes, they have genetic memory.

    @ViewerOnline101@ViewerOnline1014 ай бұрын

    • @@SkippyStuff Yep, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, came out early this year. Plot is an origin story on how Gizmo came to Mr. Wing's care, and the story starts the latter as a wide-eyed 10 year old named Sam happy to work in his parents' apothecary/pharmacy. Gizmo became displaced from his home "The Valley of Jade" after a predator attack and enslaved by a circus to become its latest attraction, whom Sam then rescues from and the show's goal being to journey across China to return Gizmo home. Meanwhile, an Anglo-Chinese sorcerer is chasing Sam and Gizmo because apparently eating a mogwai can induce immortality, and the rules obviously get broken so there's gremlins under the begrudging employ of the sorcerer. If Gremlins 1 is horror-comedy, and Gremlins 2 dials up the comedy, then Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai leans toward adventure-fantasy. It's probably the first mainstream show I've seen in years since Jackie Chan Adventures that delves into Chinese Mythology and folklore (which makes sense given the three rules operate under fairy tale logic). Sam and Gizmo encounter shapeshifters, a witch who enslaves people into working for her inn, jiangshi (Chinese vampires), a Miyazaki-like spirit world; and meeting the creator of Mogwai, Nuwa the creation goddess (a deity resembling a naga voiced by Sandra Oh).

      @NobodyC13@NobodyC134 ай бұрын
    • @@NobodyC13I haven't seen Secrets of the Mogwai yet, but honestly I actually like this change far more than the Aliens explination. Everything about the Mogwai and the Gremlins definitely had more of a classic Fae Folk feel to them than them being aliens.

  • I've always loved how meta this movie is, even when I was a kid and had never even heard the word meta lol. It just parodies itself so well. It really made the movie its own thing, not just a sequel to Gremlins. It's so very different from the original, more slapstick and goofy. But it also works so well. I do wonder if Wes Craven was inspired by this at all when writing Scream.

It's one of those movies that hits right at my sense of humor and was a influence on it from when I first saw it in the theater as a big fan of the original I dragged my cousins to see the 2nd. I love how it goes out of its way to honor and poke fun at the first one while adding some many more levels to what makes the Gremlins so much fun. Truly a Aliens" type follow up. • Gremlins 1 is one of my favorite re-watches during Christmastime, but I saw this when it came out in the theatre (I was 10, at the time) and I LOVED it, and I still love it to this day. And yes, I do like this better than the original, solely because it didn't take itself so seriously. It was treated (and rightly so) like a live-action cartoon. A few fun facts that you might have missed: -Frank Welker, who voiced stripe in the original, voiced Mohawk in Gremlins 2, and you might know Frank Welker from, say, *anything* animated since 1968, since he got his start voicing Fred from Scooby-Doo, and still voices Fred to this day. -The original Gremlins (along with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) are the reason the PG-13 rating exists today, and sure enough, Gremlins 2 is rated PG-13 -The other main gremlins, along with Mohawk and Daffy, were named George, Lenny, and Brain. With the Bat-Gremlin and Spider-Gremlin being called just that.

  • Now that I'm older I think this movie is better than Gremlins. The genetic mutations were a clever evolution making the Gremlins both a bigger threat but also more entertaining to watch. The exaggerated comedic approach to the material was a blast and kept the movie from dragging. Then there's the brilliant commentary on Corporate America, The Television and entertainment industry, and the intrusive automatization of buildings. This movie was way ahead of its time. Everything about this movie is just a ton of fun and it dialed up what made the first one so great up to 11. I get that it did lose a little bit of the serious darker tone but this movie made up for it with its boundless creativity. I love how Joe Dante approached filming this sequel.

  • I've loved this channel since the Star Trek: Beyond video. The amount of love for detail and construction that goes into films that so many people miss is bizarre when you sit and ask yourself, "What are the Wins?" Gremlins 2 is one of my all time favorite movies and I don't think it gets the praise it deserves, so thank you for taking a look at this gem! Still makes me laugh a lot harder than the first movie, if I'm being honest.

    @russellcheck@russellcheck4 ай бұрын
  • Let's be honest: from the moment the gremlins all gathered in the lobby until the electrical melting began, the film decided to go full Muppets. Also I read somewhere that Mr. Clamp was supposed to be a POS-type billionaire in the original script, but John Glover had gotten tired of playing villainous characters so he toned it down to "non-malevolent spoiled manchild".

    @RichardX1@RichardX14 ай бұрын
    • And it's because of that performance that Joe Dante decided to keep the character alive, from what I've heard.

      @JohnZ117@JohnZ1174 ай бұрын
    • He was. Obviously the character is heavily based on donald trump, but it was even more so in the script. Glover's performance changed that so they created Robert PIcardo's character and just gave all the mean clamp lines to him. So daniel clamp was tuned into more of a ted turner character. See the obsession with colorizing old movies and the end of the world tape which turner actually had made for CNN. So by a very specific set of circumstances Gremlins 2 is one of the only mainstream movies where a character based on trump is portrayed positively.

After a few moments, we discover that Gremlins have taken over our protection room. Just to have Hulk Hogan set the Gremlins straight and resume the film with no further issues. 😁 It was such a great 4th wall breaking experience.

  • ''This is a complete failure of management!'' and ''There are some things Man is not supposed to understand!'' are two lines that really show this films value, because the characters that say them are an office manager and a genetic scientist respectively, but it's done so non-cholent like a passing tone in the bassline of the film's comedy. One of the greatest, if not the greatest monster comedy scripts of all time, I see these style of jokes rehashed in everything from 'What we do in the shadows' to 'Zombieland'.... This film was forgotten because of the very high standard of films around it at the time of it's release including Back to the Future and The Goonies. With such classics to contend with it never stood a chance and was probably too smart for it's own good. One of my all time faves!

I saw none of the hijink comedy and only scary little creatures that would leap out of my Christmas tree and eat my face. It made my parents, and particularly my dad, sad because it was one of their favorite movies to watch around Christmas time. His solution was to sit me down and show me Gremlins 2. Because the comedy was much more overt, I enjoyed it way more, and the scary scenes weren't overwhelming. Also I LOVED Gizmo. One was the mental hospital guard at the coffee machine, and the other was the T-1000 sneaking up behind him after having been the floor. Second, We have a movie in the late 80s featuring an ultra rich NYC developer with a fancy tower, and there's also a character named Marla who by the end of it may be a romantic interest for said developer? That's a little on the nose, mirroring a real life story of marital infidelity that was very contemporary to this film's release.

  • A few requests for the new year: 1. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) 2. Jurassic Park III (2001) 3. Shrek (2001) 4. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) But I know you will probably get to work on Dead Reckoning: Part 1 or Oppenheimer.

  • Smart Gremlin's interview speech about "Civilization" was one of the first scenes I memorized top to bottom. One of my favorite scenes in all cine[BANG!]. Now was that civilized? No. Clearly not. FUN! But in no sense civilized.

  • Heeey, sorry to be "that guy", buuuuuut that wasn't a Godzilla movie they were watching. When you said of course the Gremlins would love a Toho film. That was a clip from: the Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. The movie that greatly helped inspire the creation of Godzilla.. love your videos my dude! Also, the Gremlins theme is probably one of my favorite. That, and the score done by Phil Glass (great name) did for Candyman.

    • You beat me to it, and I had to check you were right about the film helping inspire Godzilla, (yes I'm also one of those individuals), and it originally appeared at one point that they were going to copy the story beat for beat, if Wikipedia is to be trusted. It made sense for WB to use footage, as they are the original owners of The Beast From 20,000 fathoms and therefore the inclusion yjr clip would have cost them virtually nothing.
