As someone who is educated in interior design I think it's important to include your pets as part of that. Your home should represent your family and your family is your cats, your pets. It would be sad to completely ignore that for trying to look like a staged Instagram picture.
There's aesthetically pleasing cat furniture out there, too. I hate the look of carpet-covered cat trees (and they collect dust and cat hair so badly). Instead, I have wooden and sisal trees with removable plush pads that can be tossed in the machine. They look nicer, my cats like them, and my cat with asthma as well as myself with a reactive airway condition are less likely to be sneezy messes.

I have the opposite problem. My entire living room and dining area are ALL for them.
I just got my son to build me a cat wall out of wood with a burnt/rustic aesthetic 😍 I can’t wait to get it up for the errrm…cats 👀 oh and I got some gorgeous hemp and natural wood toys that just look gorgeous on the floor…I mean they look great to the cats 👀🤣❤️

Ahhh the sofa scratching... I would like to share what I did so maybe it will help somebody also. I was moving out and decided to buy a new sofa, more expensive one from my previous sofas but I was really afraid that it will get ruined right away by my two kitties. So before I got the sofa delivered to my new place, I bought one big sisal scratching post, two cardboard scratching beds of different shapes, a second cat tree (carpet and sisal) and put them in my living room / dinning rooming area where I hang out. When the sofa arrived, I covered it with blankets for a couple of weeks and I also put a small entryway carpet near it because I know that one of my cats likes scratching sisal and the other one likes carpet surfaces (I have hardwood floors with no carpets). For weeks, they scratched their stuff with no problem, then I started removing the blankets for the day and putting them back for night and I have noticed that they were NOT scratching the sofa anymore.... Now, the sofa is covered with only decorative throws, my cats keep scratching "their" furniture that is spread out across the apartment or still near the sofa and everybody is happy! I honestly can't believe that it worked.

Our cats have scratching posts and floor scratchers that work well for Alvin but Riley prefers our carpet now since the fabric sofa was replaced with a leather one!!

Yes it works I did the very same thing, you have to give them a positive alternative. They don't understand a punishment, all that does is make them scared of you, I love my fur babies ❤
I took on a new rescue cat who had been surrendered to the shelter because she was such a difficult cat to cope with. She's been wonderful, with just one issue: she scratches all my wooden furniture and within two days had caused a significant amount of damage to it. I watched a few of your videos, Jackson, and worked out a few things. 1) She is VERY motivated by food and 2) she is VERY keen to do the right thing, as she's so purring and happy when she gets things right and has positive attention. So I bought some double sided sticky plastic and wrapped it around all the furniture; and I got a few carpet samples from a local shop, and put one down next to every place she'd been scratching, and sprinkled them with catnip. Whenever she scratched the furniture I said, "No," as calmly as I could. Whenever she even approached the carpet squares I said, "Good scratching!" and gave her a little food treat. She stopped scratching the furniture in a few days and now sits on her carpet squares, scratches one or two time, then runs up to me for a treat. I can't believe how easy it's been to teach her the right thing. Thank you for your helpful videos, Jackson. They are so good.
My Uncle cat did the same thing. She was scratching base boards and did thousands of dollars in damage yet u look around and not see one scratching post or cat tree in the house. Instead of doing this he declaws her. Then complain about how NYS made it illegal to declaw your pet. It like what a jerk 😢
@@rachelwilliams8340 My mom and I are in the process of searching for a new cat tree post. Also, while it's heart-breaking that he declawed her, he prob. spent more money doing that than he would have spent on a cat tree. Yeah, some cat trees can be costly, but that depends on where you get it from. We had 1 cat tree on the smaller end, but that one has since been destroyed. Also, prior to my brother's arrival, we started leaving our guest room door open since cats hate closed doors...And literally for a week straight, our cat started sleeping in there basically claiming the guest room as his own lol. Either that or he sensed the arrival of my brother. But then again, all his toys and some of his scratchers were in there where he ended up using 1 of his scratchers far more in that room alone over our family room. Idk why, but turns out there is a cat scratcher in my mom's room which prob. isn't a bad thing. Also, I admit to using the water bottle on him b/c I didn't know how else to deal w/his trouble-making behavior and he's only 1. So he's still a little baby (at least to me he is). I will say he does listen to me when I tell him to get off the countertops or tell him "no,"-given he doesn't always listen to "no," but it is better to teach them when they're young b/c I even taught him "get down," or "please get down" as a kitten. And then I'd say, "thank you," where apparently our cat is very keen on manners lol. Despite the whole water bottle stuff, he still sleeps with me on my bed (I know we're technically not supposed to allow this, but I do). Thankfully, he doesn't wake me or my mom up in the middle of the night anymore, but he will jump off my bed in the middle of the night (at that point, I have 0 clue where he sleeps). Def. not my mom's room since our dog sleeps in there and I think his energy level(s) help keep him active.

My four-year-old cat who I’ve had for 3 1/2 years… He’s never scratch the furniture in his life. Doesn’t scratch things he’s not supposed to doesn’t bite. Now when I first brought him home I had to teach him not to tear up the paper towels and the toilet paper… But that only took a day or two. He’s an amazing cat. And when it’s time to be fed… I only whisper to him… “Is it time?” And he immediately goes running to his food bowl. What a wonderful creature. People who have never had a pet, simply do not get it. And by the way, my cat drinks Fiji water.

as someone who grew up with a mentally ill and reactive single parent, i had to unlearn a lot of behaviours myself and when i adopted Salem i found myself challenged in the beginning because i was so reactive and then have a lot of guilt and shame for yelling or scruffing an innocent animal. i made a promise to myself and salem that i would work on it and after just a few months i was able to approach redirecting behaviour more playfully and Salem was way more responsive and is way less anxious because i am no longer unpredictable :) thank you for your fountain of useful and easy to apply knowledge. Both Salem and I thank you for being a voice for cats

As a person who has never had a cat in my life until Saturday, this was important. I'm still learning how to train her and teach her the Yesses, since all I knew before from others in the past was spray bottle. Thankfully she's a good girl who is just as patient with me in return and knows I want to be better for her.
Oh I’ve totally been guilty of the spray bottle. Not often but it’s so common I never saw it as thar bad unt this video. But now I know better.
Nothing wrong with the bottle but you have to be very sneaky. If they see you do it, you'll just lose friend points. Otherwise they start to associate the behavior with the wetness and soon stop.
My cat picked up yes and no!😁 if I tell him no and he wants to do it he'll say yes!!! If I tell him yes and he doesn't want to do it he says no!!!! My daughter heard him one day and was amazed!
Cats can be very communicative. If both my mom and I ignore our cat too long in the mornings, he'll meow louder and I swear sometimes I literally hear him meow: "Hello," as if he's trying to say, "hello is anyone there?" lol. And he does this because he wants breakfast at 6 am as we're trying to sleep in till 8 lol. But there are times I don't mind waking up at 6 am where it's good when he does wake me up at that time from time-to-time. Lately though, he hasn't been waking us up until about 7 am though. I hope he won't where I'm surprised he's been sleeping for the last 6 hours now (I apologize to those who are superstituous) and that's usually not like him. I fed him at about 3 pm, played with him for about 10 mins., our dog chased b/c he loves to tease our dog and after that, he normally passes out for abt. 3-4 hours, then wakes up. He's usually up at like 9 pm about 1 hr. before I go to bed. Idk if that's a good or bad thing that he's still asleep though lol and it's almost 9:30 PM my time. He usually has on/off naps, but not your typical cat naps if that makes sense depending on how long a cat nap is supposed to be. I've also could have sworn I've heard him say, "No," too though. I've noticed lately that he vibrates his tail like crazy as if he's spraying, but isn't actually spraying and has started to stomp 1 bag leg while doing that lol. I didn't know what that meant, but it turns out that means they're happy and excited.

How do I know my cat loves me? By running up my entire body to perch a spot on my shoulders and she somehow does it without digging her claws in.

I tried all of the above when Norma wouldn't stop peeing & pooping on the couch, bed, etc. Found out she has lymphoma. After being on the right medications, she's a happy cat with no issues thus far.

... My cat has suddenly been having bouts of pooping just... Everywhere. And he always has diarrhea - that was sort of normal ever since we adopted him.... Pooping outside of the litterbox wasn't. I keep thinking it's stress, but I didn't know anything beyond mental concerns could cause litterbox issues.

@@angelhill8411 my cat had similar issues and finally was diagnosed with IBD last year. She's been on special food and steroids since and no more problem (although she's getting chunky from the steroids)
Learning that cats have associative memories and respond to reward rather than punishment was the best thing that happened to me in terms of dealing with cats. I see people getting annoyed at cats and wonder if I ever looked like that. It does kind of amuse me, because people don't need to be so easily wound up. It's often remarked that I have a strong connection with cats, and it's because I have had a lot of patience with them
11:50 My Trixie seems to be smart enough to realize that 1) the exciting red dot comes from the laser pointer and 2) she can't activate the laser pointer herself, but 3) if she annoys a human enough (by biting on computer cables, hovering in front of the screen, etc.), _they_ will activate the laser pointer for her.

Thank you Jackson. I have an incorrigible young cat that I am trying to discourage from getting on the counter tops...and even more important, running across the stove. I reviewed some videos and I had to really think about what was a "yes" for him. I discovered the bar stools. He can see the counters and windows from the bar stools. When he sits on the bar stools, I give him a verbal click and a treat. When he gets on the counter, I sternly say down and point to the bar stools. When he gets on them, he gets a click and a treat. I think we are making progress! 🤞🏻 We are starting clicker training as of today.
That's a really good idea. I'm going to try to find a bar stool or 2 and try this! My cats just want to be eye level all the time.
Cats are predators and go on counter tops cos they like to be high up. I have had many cats, usually living to to 18 or 19 and have always managed to discourage them not to go on counter tops. I just shout get down then pet them when they do. They usually learn quite quickly.
@@beaed9296 That has always worked for me in the past with my precious babies. This one is challenging my Cat Mom skills and forcing me to get creative to help him figure out the rules of our house and that the kitchen counter...and more importantly the stove top, are not the places to hang out. When I click, the other one now comes to get a treat as well. I always say, yes you did good not getting on the counter, you are always good, and give him a treat too 😆
I had tried everything when my girl was a kitten - balloons, tin foil, floor matts with the poky undersides...nothing worked. The only thing that worked for her was a hard smack when she jumped almost onto a lit burner. It was just a split second reaction to keep her from burning her paws and shes never jumped on a counter again. Also trick/obedience training has helped a lot too. If she wants what im cooking shes sits and waits.
we let our cat go everywhere, we have electric hobs so even when we turn them off they're hot for a while but she's never had a problem with it.
I tried deflecting the behavior. I was pet sitting a distant relative's cats. One of her young cats was scratching on the corner of the wall. She does this in several places around the house. I told her no and gave her a scratch pad. I even scratched on it like she does. She loves it. I think we will need a few more scratch pads, mats and posts to break her and her brother of this habit. At least walls and corners can be painted again.
LOL I have also often demonstrated the scratching on the pads and posts! Something I found over years is that kitties often like when you do something with them whether that's playing with a toy or scratching on their scratcher. Or looking out the window together...

Yeah they’ll do that and still scratch where ever they want. You can give ‘em several days places to scratch doesn’t mean they’ll stop ruining your stuff

I’ve been a cat owner for 20 years, and when my final baby passed in September, I waited a couple of months to grieve before adopting two kittens last month, a handsome 5mo tuxedo boy (Finn) and a petite 3mo tortie girl (Josie). Josie is everything I’ve ever wanted in a cat. So far the only thing she’s done that has displeased me is pee in an empty box right in front of me, but I didn’t punish her for it, I just got another litter box, and as far as I can tell she’s not peed in or on anything else. Finn, however, is everything I didn’t want in a cat-extremely high-energy that my little girl can’t keep up with. He tires her out and once she can’t play anymore, it’s up to me. The problem is I’m not high-energy at all, so I can’t play with him very long without getting tired out too. He has climbed my blinds, my curtains, wakes me up “brushing” my hair with his claws, and he plays too rough. I’ve managed to curb some of these behaviors-a Ssscat can keeps him off things, a cat tree in my bedroom keeps him from climbing the blinds, yucky tasting tape on cords has kept him from chewing, and I have double-sided tape I’ve yet to apply to deter mild scratching (mostly he stretches on the furniture, doesn’t actively scratch). I am, however, ashamed to admit I’ve still yelled at him for doing “bad” things, and given him little leg smacks for squirming during harness training even though I know it just makes things worse. But when you said at the end of this video that we’re blameless for our own bad behavior up to this point, I actually started crying. I always feel so mean and so guilty when I lose patience with him, I’ve even considered returning him to the foster program because I was feeling overwhelmed and unfit for him, which also made me feel guilty and I’d cry for hours about it. He and Josie are very strongly bonded now, so the idea of separating them is heart wrenching. Anyway, point is, this video helped confirm I’m moving in the right direction with how I communicate “no”, and made me feel a little less horrible for my mistakes. Cats are bored if they are stuck in a house....Cabin fever. They need exercise/grounding...touching the soil/sunlight without a window/variety/love/hugs/fun and another cat to play with.
Alisha.. Having a cat who is "extra" is not an easy job. It requires patience and a lot of empathy. You are trying and doing your best and as they grow in age, things will get a little easier, for sure. Cats who are "extra" tend to also be hilarious, and I am sure you will start appreciating this side of your cat's personality more than getting frustrated about the rest. Hang in there X

You Should consider getting 2 kittens instead of just 1!! They can learn from each other, entertain each other while u r away from home. Take it from a savvy cat owner. REALLY.

I love the air spray cans. If used properly my kitties get used to eventually not getting on counters etc. But it's not really a small sound, ha, it's just enough to scare me into jumping whenever I accidentally set it off. 😅. They really do work. Now even I don't jump on the counters anymore😇😁

I absolutely hated cats growing up. Wasnt until I was 48 when a beautiful pure white kittie showed up on our porch. It ended up bonding with who else but me. She showed me just how incredible these animals are. We now have 8 cats (all stray/feral with incredible stories). Absolutely love watching your videos Cat Daddy, spot on. Bottom line, treat your kittie like a human ( in a sense) and you have a best friend.
same. I grew up with dogs but all my friends had cats and they'd always jump on me and scratch me. Then a year ago my partners mum got v mentally unwell so we moved in for 6 months, hardest 6 months of our lifes but thanks to Sully the family cat we got through it. That's when i fell in love with him and cats. 3 months ago we just got our own.

My cat at one point jumped at my face daily. He was being very rough. At that time, I tried everything (and didn't know about your videos), but he wouldn't stop. My last resort was the no-no spray bottle. But my cat thought it was a game. He wasn't afraid, the spray bottle seemed to encourage him. He's a bit dog-like anyway. Thankfully he grew out of the behavior in the end!
I have been watching all of your videos to learn everything I can BEFORE I get a cat. I am getting her this March and have your book and subscribed. I wish there was some way to make people aware that watching and learning about cats and their behaviors before getting a cat. People would really enjoy their cats from the beginning if they did. @@mowsea Yes, I got her in March from what I thought was a reputable breeder. When she got to me, she was severely underweight and had infections (more than one)! It took me a couple of months to get her healthy and she is just now at the right weight. She is also still displaying mistrust, although it is much better. I am telling you this so that you do some in-depth research. Check with the Better Business. It wasn’t until I saw the shape Delilah was in that I went to them and discovered that they had changed their name numerous times because of complaints just like mine. BUT, I really love my Delilah, she is such a good kitten. I wanted a Ragamuffin since I am retired, and she is perfect! Her fur is so soft, just like rabbit’s fur! She was worth all of the work getting her healthy.
You can always volunteer at an animal shelter.

Just a suggestion for those who have made comments their cat(s) are still ignoring scratchers: 1. Spray a little catnip spray on the scratcher. 2. Play with them with a toy around and on the scratcher and give them big praise the second they even touch the scratcher. 3. Try different kinds of scratchers with different textures. My cats have all had definite preferences on the type of surface they enjoy scratching on. One or a combo of these things have worked for my cats, even the stubborn one's. Jackson, thank you for these tips. Any chance of getting a video on ideas to catify a small space. I have an indoor cat and live with a room mate, and we were recently forced to move into a much smaller space from a big one. It's also an odd shape, with not a lot of wall space to put things. If anyone has any creative ideas I'd love to hear them.
Anne, are you renting? If so, that may limit your ability to get creative with the limited space. Either way, look for some wooden plank offcuts and scraps of carpet from a warehouse store, glue the carpet onto the planks and fix them to the wall, creating a kind of 'obstacle course' along the higher wall space.
My cats will use a scratcher on the floor, but they LOVE the tall (32-inch) pole scratcher I got them. Best $30 I ever spent They especially love the circle of carpet wrapped around the top. I now have to replace it. I'll just go to a carpet store for a piece of remainder carpeting. Finally, my furniture is safe.
@@Jenifer_R_ I'm currently renting an apartment that is 90% carpet and I have to say I would MUCH RATHER they use their scratchers as opposed to the furniture BUT I'll take them scratching my furniture over them tearing up the carpet and door frames any day. My tiger cat Tora tore up small sections of carpet in two rooms at my old address, and my landlord charged me $130 between the two sections. Basically she tore up the carpet right along the doors, and she and her brother did a LOT of damage to the wood on the door frames. Just for the master bedroom door he charged me almost $80 in damage done to the frame. So at least for me I don't mind them using my furniture as a scratch post as long as they're not clawing up the carpet. I haven't noticed any damage done to the bathroom/front door frames thus far. Honestly I have FAR MORE trouble keeping them from destroying the blinds than anything else

Don't rip up the carpet!! 🤦♀ And don't start sawing the doorframes. 😂😂 The query about renting was in regard to whether you can drill into the walls. If your lease says 'no picture hooks', then it's a no.
I got the 30ish inch tall scratch stand from the jump and my boy has never gone to anything else - not even other scratchers. He likes scratching vertically and it allows him to stretch too. Another tip is to scratch with him - some cats just need a visible aid as your "yes"
I’ve been doing the “yes” method without the “no”. So I show my cat the scratch post and encourage them to scratch it instead when they’re scratching the couch. It stops them in the moment but doesn’t prevent them front going back to the couch moments later lol thanks for these !

After watching your videos, I was feeling so guilty, but when you said that I shouldn't feel that way as long as I do the right actions from now on, that makes me feel better. I adopted a cat recently. It’s many years older than I was told. Won’t use the litter box yet it’s perfectly healthy (per 2 vets). Really think before getting one.

Not only they have helped me become a better cat mum, but whenever someone says things like "I use spray bottles" or encourages others to do the same, I do not have to use my own words and lose my temper or say rude things, I just show them your videos and they get it.
I adopted a 1 year old kitten who came to our Tennessee rural home as a stray. After a month taking care of her outside the home. I let her inside my home. Took her to the vet; she passed with flying colors. Surprisingly, turned out, she’s a pure domestic American Bobtail cat. After a month inside, she loves our German Shepherd; but not our older cat. Her dog like ways is a learning curve. I’m a half a century young & learning by watching your videos. Thank you 🥰
I really hope that ignoring my cat at night and playing with him before bed works because I have been getting such poor sleep these past couple months because of him. Last night was my grumpiest night ever, and I swore I was going to return him and his mean sister to the rescue. Of course, now that the moment has passed, I'm willing to keep trying different things in order to get more shut eye, but man, it's hard getting little sleep for so long!
I felt this whole heartedly. The feeling of wanting to return them comes and goes

Yall need to let me know something cause im in the same boat😭😭😭 He’s the sweetest angel but when he gets the zoomies it’s a wrap! Especially at 4 am. He’s young so I know he can potentially mellow out as he gets older but it’s hard yall
@AkaiAzul mostly it has worked. Occasionally he decides to be naughty still. When that happens I slap the wall and it startles him enough to stop.
@@beautyisgorgeous8236 I hear ya. Playing before bed helps and also patiently ignoring it. They do grow out of it in my experience.
When I first got my cat she climbed my brand new blinds and broke a tea cup on the dining table at the window. What resolved it was to open the blinds from the bottom so she could see outside from the floori moved the curtains to where she couldn’t reach them for awhile. She got used to looking outside from the perch I made for her at the windows so she’s never climbed the curtains again.
I always keep my blinds up enough for them to see out I do close the curtains but they can still go behind there without damaging anything I think I'd be asking for trouble if I pulled the blinds all the way down but they're worth it✌💗🐱
Yeah cats want to look out the window regularly. So keeping your blinds or curtains closed all day long is a bad idea.
I have a boy and a girl that I adopted 2.5 years ago. My boy is a jumper and when I first brought them him he was always jumping on the kitchen counter. I obviously didn’t want him to do that because it’s unsanitary and also because I was afraid he might try to jump on the stove top and get hurt. I put upside down pie tins along the edge of my counter tops. He jumped on them 1 time and never again. 😅
Extra grateful for the encouragement to change tactics along with the reminder not to feel horrible about having done “no”s in the past. 🙏🏽

We combat the scratching problem by getting a scratching post that's better to scratch than the furniture and put it in front of the furniture in question. We found scratching posts that they find irresistible and put them in a few places, they love it, and they leave the furniture alone. They're happy and we're happy too.
I have tried this but for some reason my cat doesn’t use the scratching post!
I have 4 cat trees and 2 cardboard scratchers and one of my two cats still prefers the couch ,walls and carpet .
I hate shock collars I think anything that would be painful for any animal should be out lawed but that's just my opinion thank you Jackson for your solutions I just order the bullie one I'm hopeing it works stay tuned I'll let you all know.
yes I agree no shock collars and if you think you should use a shock collar try it on yourself not your pet that's cruel✌💗🐱

Jackson, you are spot on with the stopping scratching behavior to use a cat scratcher nearby and not using sticky paws. Been there done that and sticky paws didn't work, but cat scratcher works. Another thing is how funny that some people would think I need to punish my cat. I am not saying that I never reacted at the moment and hit, not really hard, but hit lightly when they did something to me, like bite or something like that, but how could anyone not think a cat will be stubborn. Punishment doesn't really exist for them. If someone thinks it makes them feel better to punish the cat then it's temporary and for me I regret it soon after.
Yeah, they don't really understand punishment, angry nos, and spray bottles.
@@diakmef I've done the spray bottle and it just never worked. Instead of doing the spray bottle with my current cat- I've just given up on the table completely. It's in front of the window and there is literally nowhere else to put it. Jackson Galaxy's only advice was "move the table and put a cat tree next to it". I looked at the table and around the room then said "I don't think that will work here". Instead, she can have the table and my husband and I just clean the table before using it. It's rare we even sit at the table when eating. The rule is that if it's being used then she cannot have the table, lol. It seems to work really well.
I always share videos like these. Some people just don’t get it. I have a cat tree right next to the door, and scratch pads in almost every room! She has access to toys and fresh water. And as always, a clean litter box!

My daughter brought home a kitten, to which my husband and I opposed to, we were dog people only, but it only took a few moments for us to fall in love with this new member of the family, my daughter calls him the missing link lol. Thank you so much for giving positive alternatives to punishment. I have had SO much fun putting scratching posts near their favorite furniture! I keep a jar of treats near by, & when they get close to the scratching pad, I put a treat on it & praise them. It isn't long before they are running to their scratching pad & using it, then looking up to me for a treat! I'll gladly offer it! I've never used the sticky tape, so I do want to try that for a few things. Thanks again. When we treat our animals well, they become much better companions!
I’m here because I do deeply wanna learn. Not just for my new cat, but for our old one. She’s mostly been my boyfriend’s cat. Cause all the other cats chose me. So I left her alone so she was forced to take to him, but now, six years later, she’s showing an interest in me more than him. So this helps 😆
Shoot.... Thanks, Jackson, message received loud and clear, guess I will have to rehome all the tiny water bottles stationed all over my house. 🙄.... That's okay, the naughtiest boy just stops to lick the water off and carries on.... Plus, he's learned that the only times to be avoided are when I'm holding the bottle, and by that time I get to the bottle, the mischief has already been done. They need regular playtime, now their human just needs to get with the program 😄
The water bottles make excellent recepticals for hydrating facial mists...just saying! Yes...I squirt myself...lol.

I had three cats from 1990 until the last one passed in 2012. They were the best happy cats and extremely well behaved. All were love bugs and they listened. They played fetch, answered to their names, and sat in the front garden never running off just hanging with me. They didn't scratch on my furniture only their furniture. They didn't jump on counter tops only couches and their cat trees. The slept in my bed. They didn't knock things over they played with their menagerie of toys alone or with me or with each other. I never had cats only dogs and I am sure i did a lot of things wrong but my cats were just loveable well behaved companions. I do miss them but fear no other cats could compare.
I just adopted some kittens, they are both super good cats. They don't destroy any of my stuff (only theirs) and sound similar to yours BUT one does like to get on the counter and they go at it all night (not breaking/knocking stuff over but they do chase/play fight). Do you think they will grow out of the counter surfing and hyperactivity all night? Thanks

When my girl was little and she like to scratch on everything, I would get off my butt immediately and move her over to her scratcher and then I would give her praise when she scratched. Randomly when I saw her scratch I would go over to her give her praise give her pets. For many years in her life I think until the end when she scratched on her scratcher she would often look at me, and I would tell her what a good girl she was and love on her.

This is my cat as well! he likes to anchor his paws near the top of the post while I give him firm pets from neck to tail. I imagine it stretches justttt right.
This is going to be a big help for me. My husband and I recently adopted two kittens and they are behaving well, but there are a few behaviors I want to redirect into something more positive. Really glad I found your channel. One of the kittens is a bright and intelligent boy who is harder to read than his very cuddle-driven sister.

We're so lucky that the house we just moved in to has a spiral staircase "tree" right near our front door so our furbaby can see who's coming in and out from a safe spot. She's a tree dweller so she's very happy here & has adapted to being an indoor cat very nicely.

My initial intention was to get an adult but here I am with an adorable hellion. Looks like I’m the one that needs to change my behavior and I’ll definitely use your suggestions for a calmer household. 🐾
My cat is a door dasher. He was a stray so he likes the outside. I have found that if I pick him up and go outside with him for a minute so he can look around and listen for sounds for a minute he gets satisfied. Then, I put him back inside and close the door. Works every time and he has no chance to dash out. Gentle suggestions work, he understands "no" and it's always delivered in a calm way and he listens.

My cat scratches my bed so I’ve bought scratchy cardboards rectangles. I praise her and give a treat whenever I see her using them. She still scratches the bed so I’ve ordered sticky paws! She was doing inappropriate peeing outside the litter so Ive stepped up my cleaning, used filters to deodorize the space, and treated her when she used it. She had bladder inflammation once so I think peeing was stressful. It’s treated now and she hasn’t peed outside the box for a long time. Thanks for all the advice! My relationship with my cat has improved greatly.

Thanks! This video was immensely helpful. After a seven year hiatus from having a cat in our family, we plan on adopting 2 kittens in the spring. Sad to say, we have made some mistakes in the past, but we are now well informed and will strive toward becoming excellent cat-parents.
Our almost 18 year old burmese son has multiple illnesses, so we can never ignore his night crying. We lose alot of sleep because we love him so much.

I love this channel. I’m taking care of my friends cat for 5 weeks and have no experience with cats. This channel has solved a lot of the mystery around these magical beasts. My favorite thing is this teaches me cat language and how to love this little fluff ball the way it wants to be loved
My cat actually likes to eat the sticky paws tape. So can't use any sticky tape of any kind. Tried sprays to repel and have vertical and floor scratch pads everywhere. I just gave up and just have to keep repairing my bedroom wall. He loves shredding sheetrock. Took to vet. No problems medical or deficiency. He's just a problem child. But I love him anyway. He's a unruly teenage child cat 🐱.
Yes, one of our cat's will just eat that sticky tape.
Omg same! My cat loves tape too! I can't leave any packages unattended even for a second because he'll rip the tape off the box with his teeth.

For the scratching the couch issue, I highly recommend buying a cat scratching slip cover. It goes over the side of the couch and they scratch that, and leave your actually couch alone.

So glad you are here. I am new cat owner after many years of not having a cat. So I realize that even in the past I did not do too bad of a job with my 2 male cats but they were buddies and really did not need me except to feed them lol. They were a joy. Now after about 25 years I have a female cat and I adore her. She is sassy, little bossy, and fun as she can be. Insists that I play with her and my bad, I accidently created a play time at the worst time of day. I notice she adjusts to scheduled easily so I need to start a different play time. I just want to say that I learned so much from you and happy to join and become a Mojonaut.
A lot of these issues I accidentally avoided by getting an older “disabled” cat. His paw is bent so he can’t fully use it, only supports himself on it. So waaay less jumping and he’s slower so no dashing. I feed him on a schedule so he sleeps through the night. The couch scratching solved itself when I cleaned my couch with a simple vinegar solution. I don’t smell it anymore but he hates it.

Thank you on the thoughts on the cat who scratches the side of my chair or my leg when I am in my chair. Sticky tap and a near by scratching pole. So simple. So practical. I cannot believe I missed it!
I work night shift and every single day I come home I play with my cat and then she eats her breakfast after. She sleeps and cuddles with me THE WHOLE TIME I'm sleeping and it's one of my favorite things about her.
I just adopted a 3mos Onyx baby girl and she loves to sleep and cuddle just changed my life.

When I get the chance I'm definitely going to check out that website of yours then I could always pay my grandmother to order stuff off it for me and out of all the no's the only one I used to use was the water bottle but once I seen you say in one of your previous videos not to I found other ways to get fluffy to behave by simply just changing the environment like you said if there's something I don't want her getting to I just make it not visible to her and it's worked quite well

Vikki is a 4-year old deaf and blind black cat. She can't see or hear. While I try to help her, Angel my German shepherd keeps Sunya occupied. Vikki can't figure out where the litter box is, or the door into the cat gazebo. 😿 Then by night, she yowls until i get her and she sleeps near me. The vets here want me to 'put her out of her misery.' ah no. Not happening
Find another vet. They sound like uneducated cruel people. Why would anyone kill a pet for having no sight, & for being deaf??? Sick!
I have practiced everything you say is proper in the past with my eight cats... I'm really okay with the zoomies, I get a kick out of it, my place is catified so it's okay. They do understand the word no but I use it sparingly, such as trying to do a doordash, I say no and they back up and stay. They will come out if invited. Four of the cats that I allow outside for short period of time will come inside when I call them. The other four are pure house cats and terrified of outdoors.
Thank you. We got a new kitty about 10 days ago and she has started going after the blinds in the bedroom when we are trying to sleep. We were saying NO, clapping and getting frustrated getting up and moving her away from them. You reminded us that we can do more positive things to tire her out and reinforce "acceptable" behavior.

First, I love you, Jackson!! So do my cats, btw. Your books on Catification opened my eyes in a way I never expected. Always a " cat lover," but somehow never saw what is so obvious to me now: Your relationship with your furr buds can be rich and fulfilling, especially when you realize that it's a "symbiotic partnership" you have as pet guardian. You receive so much more satisfaction (and love) when you're coming from a place of mutual respect and admiration than from a place of "power over" or "control" of your pet's behavior. Understanding why cats spray, or scratch, etc., and having the tools to replace a negative behavior with a positive one, has enriched both my cat's lives, as well as my own. Keep it coming, Jackson!

We have a large kitchen and large island. It is impossible to put detractors everywhere. We do not leave food out for obvious reasons. We finally gave up. It was too much work to constantly attend to her antics. I do have to disinfect often but I’m no longer stressed about her being on the counters. Much happier home for all of us!
Yessss!!! That's exactly where I'm at. Until you find a solution its best not to let your blood pressure soar. Though i havent given up yet!
My 1st cat stayed down off kitchen counters, but l had her from a kitten , trained her young and never moved house. Except once, when a roast chicken had just been taken out of the oven. Well, the cat flap was in the kitchen and it was on her route so ... I chalked that up to cruel and unusual temptation, yeah my bad.
I believe that’s what bleach spray was invented for…
@@jennifersetser9091 To irritate cat and human lungs? Unless your cat wears a camera you have no clue where it goes, if you have a cat door you have no idea what's in your kitchen. Cats that have no go areas are calmer and more sociable in general.
@@veronica_._._._ I have sixteen rescues, I’m 73,have had cats all of my life. Yes I use bleach spray,but I’m not an idiot..I spray a surface and wipe it down. My cats are all neutered,have two large catios, see the vet when needed,don’t go outside as I live in a National forest full of predators. I’m a retired RN.BSN, former shepherdess, and I’m pretty sure I know more about critter care than most.
