Should You Walk Your Cat?

The idea of walking down the street, leash in hand and on the other end of the leash...your cat? This is dog territory, right? Not so fast...
It’s funny to me that so many people agree that cats are “untrainable.” At the very least, it’s time to put that particular cat-fable to rest!

  • I trained my cat to come when I say ”Why I got no kitty?". Just started silly and now I've made the worst command ever. Haha. He will come from a deep sleep, anywhere in the house...just comes flying. He just gets good boy and pets as a reward.

    • LOL! I love his key point-if your cat is not a "door dasher"-then don't try it. One of our cats LOVES to go out on the patio with us. He begs to go outside but he only wants to be out there when we are out there so I will try the steps Jackson described to walk with him. The main point is that it's for the cat-not for the human. If your cat is terrified-there's your answer-no reason to try! I really think our door dashing kitty will LOVE taking a walk and it will enrich his life.

    • most people don't realise this, but cats eyes don't see the world like we do... their vision is a lot more blurried, especially at closer distances they see 10x more thanks to sound and smells. They create mindmaps that go far beyond our recognition and understanding with those two senses. Their eyes are more "supporting" the other senses, compare this to our "primary sense" which is vision, and where sound can help us, but we can't do anything with smells except saying what we smell, we don't make mindmaps from smells. We do make mindmaps with sound, but this is also more "confirmation" than being primary source. Eg: if you'd be blindfolded sitting in a car with the windows open, would you recognize where you are just by sound; you'd probably know you're at a trainstation if u hear a lot of trains, but would you know you're at a red-light if you hear a car honk and hear engines idling? Or would you think you might be at a car-show at this moment?

    • @@Nerobyrne if your cat walks you and u are not on a leash, nor is the cat, and the cat listens to you when u tell it that it's time to go home again, then you earned the respect of your cat and she has yours too. I walk my cat too, also unleashed, but a lot of people think walking a cat is like a dogwalk. I'm just a bystander when i walk my cat, giving her the room to sniff out the neighbourhood (even catch some mice for me), and i walk her at least 2x/day with nice weather and 1x if it's rainy. 15-30 minutes per walk, and when i say it's time to go home, she always comes with me. Sometimes she really wants to stay out (eg when she detected more mice to "play" with), and she'll do some "extending-tricks" to slow us down, but in the end, when i say i had enough and it's INSIDE NOW, she always returns back to normal-mode and even takes the lead on returning back home...

  • I dated a girl with a cat that used to be a outside cat till he was hit by a car. He always tried to escape whenever the door was open. I decided to try and leash train him. that led to him forgetting how to move whenever the harness was on him but one day after he nearly got out I decided to just put him outside on the leash. After a few minutes of him just laying on side in the grass I thought maybe pulling him a little would get him to walk. Nope I dragged him probably 5 feet and picked him up and put him inside. Everyday for over a month we did this and he never found his feet. Eventually I gave up and for a couple days didn't do it. The 3rd or 4th day of not going outside he came to me with the leash in his mouth. So I thought well lets see. Put the harness and leash on him and nope just flop cat again. I pulled him a bit around the yard and then I realized he was playing with the leash. That led to months of daily cat draggings in the yard. I'd pull him around stop and he would sniff and play a little then he would meow at me and we'd go another few feet and he'd do it again. The only time he would stand up is when he realized I was going to take him inside and he would fight me or claw into the ground. If I didn't take him for a walk within about an hour of getting home from work he'd knock the leash off the wall and harass me till I took him outside. I miss that cat.

Cats are my absolute favorite animal, and I'm planning on taking my family cat when I move out since I'm her favorite and her #1 care taker anyways. But he said we could NEVER have a cat if we move out because his MOMMY wouldn't be able to visit. Even though she literally would visit people's houses who have cats. And that's just 1 of the 200 reasons why I broke up with him. I also never really wanted to move out with him, I just wanted to have animals. 😂

      @gabbstarm5212@gabbstarm5212 Жыл бұрын
    • @@gabbstarm5212 Tip 1: Get a brave cat. Look for the one in the litter that is open to greeting everyone that comes close. Tip 2: Start harness training and overall de-sensitivity training as a kitten. Make them meet as many new people as possible. Give lots of opportunity to meet new things. Tip 3: Consistency, don't give up even if you don't feel like. If you don't feel like walking the cat today, too bad. Still gotta. Unless something important during work came up, you're sick and need to lay in bed, or blizzard/storming outside. It's walkies time. Tip 4: Give a little push. If they don't look like they will make the first step, make it for them. If they stick close to the house, let them stay near the house for a bit before carrying them to the edge of the front lawn. Then carry them further and further.

Some of the cats that I fed outside also started the habit. since then the older cats teach the kittens to continue the tradition from generation to generation. At some point I had 3 dogs 15 cats and a chicken in a procession.

They see him with his leash at the door with us and oh yeah, it's all of us in procession for our walks. The girls take cover when they feel they need to, and their brother is aware of where they are. A great dynamic, so incredible to see their interactions during these outings.

Eventually, she will come away and calm down for a while, but then she starts again. I am afraid that if I start to take her out on a leash, I will never get a moments peace. He always wants to be outside especially on cool days in south central Texas. We met a neighbor's horse and fed him some long sweet Bermuda grass. The horse was a good boy and did nothing to scare him. I started taking him out on a 6' leash when he was a year or two old. Now he's on a 16' length and we walk trails in the woods together. • clicker training isnt about the clicker it's about the positive reinforcement and positive association, its like Pavlov and his dog just with an extra step, pavlov had the bell to the treat, the bell is the clicker in this case just now you expect an "appropriate behaviour" to go along with it,so in the context of this video, once your cat interacts appropriately with the harness (and you have to decide whats "appropriate") and as soon as that behaviour that you defined as appropriate is done you immediately click the clicker then immediately give a treat, the clicker is just replacing your voice or hands and instead of giving like "sit" or "harness" you click, im my experiences cats are smart and can learn different words so using a clicker is pointless its just the concept of appropriate behaviour followed by reinforcement (for cats its food) and pairing that with a sound like the clicker or a bell or a word

  • We had a dachshund, a Labrador retriever and a neutered tomcat when I was growing up. The cat would exit the house after the dogs on leashes and "participate" in the walk. While the dogs sniffed trees and checked stuff out, the cat would stalk through the neighbors bushes, from yard to yard, following along. He did it his way, prowling, hiding in shadows and shooting across open spaces at a sprint. Occasionally, he would interact with the walkers, but it was mostly participation at a distance, enjoying his own private adventure.

  • I had a kitty named Maxwell who loved to go for walks. I wasn't supposed to have a cat in my apartment, so I had to smuggle her out of the building and take her to the park to walk. So, I put a paper grocery bag on the floor and put her leash inside. Max would hop into the bag and I rolled the top down a bit to carry her out to the car. When we got out of sight of the apartments I opened the sack and out jumped Max to enjoy her car ride to the park. Returning home I would stop before reaching the apartments. Max would hop back into her bag to be smuggled back into the apartment. I never had to "train" her. I just showed her the bag trick once and she got it. Max was a brilliant cat.

  • My cat Storm always showed that he wanted to go outside so I purchased a harness and leash for him. The first time I put the harness on him was hilarious because one I did not buckle it and two he just fell over. I immediately took it off and tried again the next day and built up confidence in him by repeating the process and allowing him to determine how long he would have the harness on. Once he was comfortable with the harness I then added the leash which is more weight and he was sensitive to it therefore I repeated that process until he was comfortable with it. Once he was comfortable with both we went outside. Also, my cat loved to travel. He would stand at the window of the passenger seat and look outside as we traveled sometimes all the way from Texas to Connecticut to visit my family and he was always fine with it, but having that harness and leash allowed him to be adventurous once we got to where we were going or just in the neighborhood. We eventually moved to Germany and when I picked him up at the airport I immediately put his harness and leash on In the airport and allowed him to walk around because he wanted to explore. There were other people in the airport with their dogs on harness and leash but no one else with a cat. I got so many double takes. While in Germany I purchased a very long leash that way I could be outside with him and he could explore the yard without me having to walk a couple feet behind him. He really enjoyed that. • When I lived in CA I loved to go to the beach in a cute little town called Carpinteria. One day I was there just watching the water and I see a cat come close, sniffing the ground around me. I noticed it had a harness and leash on and I looked up and its owner was reading a book while holding its leash. I, being the cat lady I am, introduced myself to the cutie pie and their owner and asked why she was reading. She laughed and said that her cat loved to just sit in one place for so long smelling everything it could smell that it was less of a “walk” and more of an adventure. she would just sit there bored out of her mind while her cat had the time of its life. So one day she brought a book to keep herself entertained and that was that. It became their daily ritual. When she feels a tug in the leash she moves with it. When it stops she stops and reads. She said he can take up to about 10 minutes or more in one spot lol. I loved it and I’ve thought of her so often ever since.

Whenever you miss him thinking of this may help: There is a story about a heavenly crossway called the rainbow bridge because of all it's beautiful colors. Just this side of the rainbow bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass. When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are young again. Those who were sick, hurt, or in pain are made whole again. There is only one thing missing, they are not with their special person who loved them so much on Earth. Dumped it back outside saying it was probably someone else’s cat 😡 no collar, very dirty cat. I can’t believe they just put it back outside instead of keeping it

  • I spent last Summer training my cat to harness, lease and go outdoors. Beatrice, my Mainecoon began to slowly explore and expand her walking activities. She was doing great. She played with all the dogs, she let people pet her then, another cat moved next door!!!!! Beatrice no longer does her walks but rather goes outside but stays in a 6 foot perimeter of the front door. The other cat has since moved but Beatrice is having none of it. In regard to harness and leash training, I left the harness in the same spot for a few weeks so Beatrice could check it out and put her pheromones on it which she did after about a week. I take Beatrice out twice a day, but I always ask her if she's ready. She , peeks down the stairs and has a good think about it then will come and sit by the door. She's brilliant about having her harness out on but if she displays a false positive about wanting to go out and I grab the harness, she pushes it out of my hand.

  • I think I’ve successfully harness trained my cat thanks to this videos encouragement! Things I’ve realized. I started a month after I adopted my cat-and I think that worked against me. It was too soon. I think you should wait until you have that strong trust bond with your cat. Things that worked well: Actually walking around holding my cat outside. (Not forcefully, just chill- if he struggles I place him on the ground) He seemed to react calmer to the outside world in my arms rather than on the ground feeling vulnerable and this helped him feel used to outside. I would sit at the park with him on my lap and I do this if I think he starts to looks a bit scared or when a dog appears in the distance. He actually hates being carried in a confined space such as our lovely travel cat bag (we have it out at all times and play with him in it-no luck so far… he sleeps on the lid flapped out on the floor🤦🏼‍♀️) so holding him in the arms or lap was best for us. Also always taking him to the exact same location and space. When I noticed him feeling more confident and asking to go out onto the balcony to bird watch- that’s when walking him on harness became easiest and tail began to flagpole while outside on the harness. We don’t walk far since the park is near our house and he knows his way home which helps him feel secure. He shows us when he is ready to go home by walking towards home… then running. I don’t know why but he loves to suddenly run home 😂 maybe he is overwhelmed-or maybe he enjoys the playful jog-no idea but that’s the stage we are at now haha. It’s been 3-4 months so that’s good progress! Well done Beanie! 🐈‍⬛

    • That's what I'm currently doing with my indoor/but-interested-in-outside cat. I hold her and walk around the inside of the apartment building, up and down the stairs. Soon when I'm confident, I'll try holding her and take her outside briefly. Unlike you, I won't set her down outside without a harness. I'll go back inside if she starts to struggle. Then I'll try putting the harness on and hold her while walking around. I'm hoping it will distract her that she's wearing it, and she'll get comfortable faster with less flopping if she does flop. Will see. If that doesn't work, I'll try treat/clicker training.

    • @@alexapuerta yeah! And playing with your cat while they wear the harness is really good! We kept the harness in the toy cupboard so when he hears the sound of the toy cupboard being opened he runs over all excited and happy- then we quickly put the harness on while he’s mind is 100% focused on toys and it was easy! He is a very simple one track mind boy- when he thinks of toys or food, it consumes all this thinking energy. At the vet she used treats very efficiently to distract him from having his hair pulled out for samples and it was easy too lol 😂 he knew nothing was happening.

  • We found a cat that we thought was someone else’s and it turned out it wasn’t their cat. It was a feral cat and winter was around the corner so we left out some food for her and got her a warm hut to stay in, we didn’t try to force a relationship with her. Over the years she started coming onto our porch with us which was really cool that she was comfortable with us and even wanted to be petted by us. Then she started coming inside our house, fast forward another year or so and now she lives in our house, we try to let her outside but she never wants to go outside. She doesn’t even wait by the door, I’m glad that she likes us. She used to be so scared of us. Her personality is still skittish but that’s to be expected of a cat that was/ is kinda feral. She’s a black cat so I’m glad she lives indoors just Incase someone sick ever wanted to harm her. Edit: her name is Wendy, short for Wednesday because we found her on a Wednesday. Coming up to almost another year with Wendy is amazing, she’s an incredibly sweet and loving cat and I can’t imagine life without her. She can’t meow (like more feral cats), just drops her jaw and try’s to honk at us, she’s PRECIOUS.

I NEVER call him if I have to give him medication or bathe him or just because (in those cases I just grab him on the fly)! • Took me over two months to get my cat to accept the harness. We started when he was about 6 months old. In the beginning he was playing dead, refusing to move... so, I was putting the leash on him every day for 5 mins, with the leash, but without me holding it, so that he could get used to having it on him. Then, we gradually started going for walks. Now, we go everyday and we have even been on the beach. People look at me like I am crazy (I am really the ONLY ONE in my city that walks a cat ), but as he is happy and safe outdoors with me, I pay no attention :-D

My mother almost had a heart attack. Fortunately Nina-bean was always astoundingly graceful and didn't break a thing. (Needless to say, I'd never heard of a clicker.)

  • I started taking my cat out on the porch, and wasn't ever planning on anything else. I let him go off yesterday and now he just wants to explore everywhere. He stays in our yard because dogs are everywhere and I'm not interested in trying to carry a scared cat home lol but he loves it. He's more confident and less wary of things and people outside than he is inside, which I find interesting. He let a complete stranger (our neighbor) approach and pet him while on the porch once no problem. He took to the harness and leash pretty quickly, too.

  • When I got in a 7 weeks old kitten I wanted her to be part of my outdoor world of camping. First I had to get her used to the harness, then the leash. All in all 2 weeks with bribing her with treats, (no clicker), as we went along with the training. Unfortunately, Lacey is a very timid kitten & does not like strangers, but only has eyes for her hooman mum! I’m so glad she trusts me. So at 7.5 weeks old we set off to camp at a beach. I think she loved it, although she never said so. The next 2 camps were in woods. She loved the expeditions of exploring trees & holes but with the harness & leash. At home she cannot wait to get outside on the leash. It’s worth working on.

We made it part of the routine for him to stop in the threshold for a few seconds before he ambled on out and I think that might have helped. He sniffs around there a bit first and I think that might be part of it. Gets him to think about it instead of just rushing the door.

  • Our boy loves his morning walks. There is no better way to start the day than with a looong walk in the forest with our boy. We have so much fun together. Some things you have to laugh at. Why is he scared of tiny frogs, but always wants to attack elks? Elks are very, very big! Mr. Galaxy I think don't live near the polar circle. So for those of us that do: 1. If it's really cold a jacket may be necessary, depending on the fur. 2. In snow, ice and frost they can get very sore paws from the frost and road salt. Remember to wipe their paws when you come home, and be generous with ointment on cracked paws. We use lanolin, it's completely safe for them to lick off and not very expensive. If the roads have just been salted in the morning we carry him over the road. 3. I recommend some nice audiobook in one ear while walking if, when, you find it boring to just stand by one bush for ten minutes.

I also have a walk in black cat who won over our pitbull terrior. She then had 3 kittens and we kept 2 of them. Tuxedo, the first born, has taken to joining Abby and I on our walks, which is super cute and fun. The idea of leashing a semi feral cat is extremely strange for me and I feel blessed that my kitties choose to be with us, free but loyal and affectionate. We even moved with them and they adapted and stayed.

  • Jackson, I start my kittens on a harness, actually Butterfly Cat Jackets. I have them wear the harness around the house, (part time) then progress to a leash. I use a a “fishing rod fishing rod feather toy that they are are used to playing with. I have them chase the toy and treat them. Eventually we progress to out side.; taking the toy or a branch for them to chase. Treats when they move forward. They with climb the cat walk fence, jump up a tree trunk, have fun. We have created walking trails for cats and humans. We live in a dangerous area for cats so they do not go out without a harness and supervision. We created a cat fort they go to with a cat door. They are completely enclosed in and protected from predators. One cat refused the harness or staying inside and sadly he died young, 8 or so. All of our cats now die of old age because outdoors can be so dangerous.

Then she would wait under the bushes at the end of the street for me to get back, and then we'd walk home.
