@@TheHolyMrNut Those hologram performances were actually very rare! They did it like 2/3 times. During their first tour they'd just perform behind a screen lol. But Albarn didn't like that.

Someone pointed out once and i feel its been pretty consistent that if Fantano isn't happy about something he brings up Damon Albarn but if its something he likes he says 2-D instead. Not sure HOW consistent that goes but it did seem somewhat accurate with how he reviewed the Song Machine Singles as they came out.
I think it was more of a HUMANZ problem, in that album was missing a lot of character that the previous albums had as Gorillaz had felt like it had no presence on the album.

I met Fantano once working at a venue he performed at. That being said I’m not 100% sure he isn’t also a character invented by Damon Albarn.
The voice actor of Murdoc actually used to live on my road! Back in 2012 during a street party for the Queen's jubilee he came into our house and through my bedroom to do a small speech from our balcony. Being a lifelong diehard Gorillaz fan, you can imagine how amazing that was to a 10-year-old me!

He canonically isn’t really the face, in like, the band sense. 2-D is (because Murdoc isn’t pretty enough to be the face and I thiiink he can’t sing?). Murdoc is the “leader” of the band and also and also arrogant so it makes sense that he is always the one that does these types of promotion. However I would say that Murdoc’s role in Gorillaz as a story rather than a band is more of the protagonist.

Honestly as funny as this is I really gotta say that Murdoc’s model is like, really good, you can see the little shifts of expression and he has that cartoonish showing of emotion that the fully animated character normally has. He feels present.
