    • Welcome to the world of streaming promotions... It seems pretty hard to work an album over a year like it was pre streaming. More and more all the promotions leads up to the album, because once the album is released, that is the hugest an album will chart. I see more remixes being released as singles post album release, because it no longer makes sense to release a song that is already out there. It's a total different mentality of promotions than it was even ten years ago when they were still pushing physical media as the mainstay.

    • I think this is a very interesting comment, because I’m really glad that Damon is able to pull off these tricks and appeal to the younger generations so easily. But at the same time, it’s the older generations that he is seemingly slipping away from. I can’t count how many comments I see all over social media basically saying “I wish they went back to the early Gorillaz sound one day” and I can’t agree more. But, me being one of the four people who really enjoyed “Humanz” just as much as I enjoyed “Demon Days,” I really enjoy the fact that Damon is just doing what he wants to do instead of holding onto his 15+ year old hits.

I just love the approach of essentially releasing a bunch of singles instead of making a cohesive album. • Personally think this is the cleanest sounding record production-wise I’ve heard in a while. Just listened on some studio monitors for the first time and it’s so smooth. Booming drums, vibrant synths, lush vocals. It all just fits together so nicely. I do agree, though, that some of the tracks could’ve used a bit more in terms of songwriting. I still do really like oil and baby queen is good, but they both felt like something was missing in both. Both needed some sort of change partway through the song to be more dynamic and maybe more instrumental variety throughout. Solid 8/8.5 for me.

The production in particular is so uncharacteristically unadventurous, I still couldn't hum Oil if you asked me to and I've listened to it ten times by now. I do wish the bonus tracks had been worked into the album, I really think it would have flowed much better and offered more of a Gorillaz feel. Captain Chicken is hilarious and Controllah is among the best songs they've made in a long time. And while yeah, New Gold is kinda just a Tame Impala song, those overlapping vocals on the back half send me straight to heaven every time, so groovy.

And these more low-ley projects always get labled as "mid" or "bland." But I disagree, I don't think every Gorillaz album needs to be cutting edge or punchy or whatever. As a person who loves the now now, this wasn’t even remotely close to the feeling and interest that album has. Idk, it feels very middle of the road (pun intended), it doesn’t lean enough into experimental storytelling or experimental music either. It’s just very meh. The lore is also very…. Not great? They’re trying to make it soo amazing and complex and it ultimately comes off as just: meh. Also, I love how Anthony gave his honest opinion despite having interviewed Murdoc and having connections to Damon. Straight-up beautiful song that seems pretty simple at first glance, but there's so much going on beneath the surface, with the change in the number of measures in the chorus vs the verse, and the part where you expect the second chorus to hit but it does something totally different instead. Lots of subtle tricks that reinforce the melancholy of the lyrics and melody.

New Gold really grew on me, it was that damn East Asian (?) wind (?) instrument that cues in the first verse. Loved it’s use! Then when the full album came out it was a bit of a “meh” but then watching a few reactions to it I picked up on a few detailed that they pointed out. Giving it another listen it really came alive. • Which there's nothing wrong with but people gotta hate I guess. Personally, this is MY personal favorite Gorillaz album mainly BECAUSE of its chill vibes. Seven of its 10 tracks are in my favorites list, making Cracker Island THE most well represented album on there, on a list which covers everything back to the debut. This is solid stuff and if people think it's too chill, trust me...there WILL be more hard Gorillaz in future for sure, however, a Gorillaz album is about WAY more than just the music, it's the experience of following the band along for a story and the storyline for Cracker Island is HELLA intense and was awesome to follow. I love Song Machine Season One musically but the storyline is pretty weak...at least we do get a LOT of videos AND great music but the plot was honestly a weak excuse plot to satisfy fans who couldn't accept a Gorillaz album with no storyline to it. It's cool, it's fun and "The Lost Chord" is one HELL of a finale but yeah, there WAS no story to that one. Cracker Island had us all following every little drop, every short, Murdoc message, Discord post, song, interview and video to find out what all was going on... THAT is the Gorillaz experience and THAT'S where Cracker Island shines. But...meh...to each their own, I guess, meanwhile though... I'ma jam 'Cracker Island', 'Oil', 'Tired Influencer', 'Silent Running', 'New Gold', 'Baby Queen' AND 'Tarantula' while everyone else moans about them...😁

    • Song Machine Season One is definitely good...but that's ALSO a full TEN SONGS released as singles prior to full album release with ANOTHER TEN SONGS that were to be released for Season Two! Half of album released as singles, half as B-sides just like with Cracker Island which released FIVE singles and FIVE B-sides, so no difference here except for more videos for the singles...and the fact that the B-sides are also Season Two and ALSO now have videos on KZhead, sooo...what is your point again? For me, the sticking point is that the songs for Song Machine Season One are VERY good, culminating in "The Lost Chord" which works as a finale on ALL levels, however, I can't say the same for the Season Two B-sides. They just don't carry that vibe at all. However, not one, not two but THREE of Cracker Island's B-sides ARE now on my personal faves list...Oil, The Tired Influencer and Tarantula. That's THREE B-sides album only tracks that feel every bit as worthy as any of the singles for being faves...while 'Skinny Ape', which IS one of the singles, is NOT on that list. Does this album hit 100%? No...but no Gorillaz album ever does. However, I DO like how even some of the B-side tracks hold up as well as any single and yet one single doesn't. This shows a creative who is in it for the ART not the money. For whatever reason, Skinny Ape needed to be a single and so it was, simple as that. We NEED more artists like that out there, artists who aren't afraid to follow their creative instincts even when it doesn't make commercial sense. I may not always agree...however, I can still respect the decision itself and give a solid 👍 for Damon following it. My only criticism would have to be the lack of proper music videos to keep the story filled in at all necessary points. We basically got the epilogue last, an unrelated moment with the Skinny Ape AR experience and then the dramatic climax with Silent Running but all the rest was just in lore drops. While I did love the drops... nothing beats seeing the WHOLE band doing what they do best and telling their story through music videos. Plus, the overwhelming focus on Murdoc in every appearance coupled with Noodle talking only in Japanese when she IS given a chance to speak. I do feel like Jamie Hewlett needs to focus MORE on making good storyline videos, giving EACH member a chance to appear to their respective fans AND REMEMBER THAT NOODLE DOES SPEAK ALL LANGUAGES NOW! Yeah, that's a part of DEMON DAYZ LORE, so STOP FORGETTING THAT! That being said, still releasing bangers and still fun to follow...Cracker Island a DEFINITE WIN! 😍😁

I really love The Tired Influencer, Oil is beautiful with them together, usually Damon let’s the guest take the lead if they want and that’s what makes Gorillaz have that unpredictable and otherworldly sound at times but I think it’s what always works the most for them. Possession Island I thought was a more well constructed song than The Valley of the Pagans. And don’t get me wrong I love that song. I just know Beck sent his recording over the phone for the song. But Possession island just sounds beautiful, well written and a solid way to end the album. Although I really love all the songs additionally on the deluxe version. Del was fun and classic, reminded me of superfast jellyfish. Controllah is a bop and I kinda wish it was on the album instead of Tormenta. Crocadillaz is fantastic! Rip Trugoy the Dove. I will admit with you I do find the other version of silent running better but I kinda like the more fun version for the album. I like the way Damon can progressively make his songs feel “younger” yet still be current. He just does such a great job with staying relevant and has a great ear for finding new artists to work with, along with getting to work with legends in the industry. Album is a 8 out of 10 tho to me, been addictive to listen to and after just seeing them again on this last tour I need to see more of this new album!

  • Damon's singing has gotten so mopey. I remember reading how, on the debut, Dan the Automator told him to sing with more confidence, and I think it really worked. Sure, tracks like Slow Country still had his more gentle inflection, but it's been over a decade since the last 5/4 or M1A1. He's not really playing with his voice the way he used to. Even on Demon Days he was more bold in his performance, I think. Ultimately, it's a taste thing. I'd like to hear Damon try to be a bit louder and more present. For me it's getting to the point that pretty much every guest vocalist on recent Gorillaz material outshines Damon completely.

    • He cannot sing like on the self-titled anymore because his voice deepened alot. Just listen to 13 and Nearer the Mountain More Pure the Stream Flows to take off the 2D filter and get a contemporary experience of what I mean. Then listen to Leisure and tell me the guy isn't incredible with coping of losing his original voice that made him famous. :)

    • I guess you haven't heard Damon's other music then? He's always had a mopey side, it's kind of a British thing with the mostly chilly, overcast weather and slowly degrading quality of life, but there's a sobering realness to it and makes you feel more alive. He's the king of melancholy, even in his Blur days, you've got Clover over Dover, Out of Time and Battery in Your Leg, amongst others. As for his voice, he's 54 and your voice doesn't get better with age, it just keeps slipping.

  • The first several songs of the album definitely baited a bit and then a whole different album took over. I noticed the songs that were released earlier were the songs that followed the way of Song Machine, a cop-out, really. Silent Running is easily the best track on this album followed by Oil but Tarantula is the most underrated. I can’t make heads or tales on Damon’s focus here but it’s at best a B+ graded album.

  • the main issue would have been fixed if they just didn't have a deluxe, and added the 3 extra songs into the base album. only like 6-7 minutes extra, and all three songs are rap, so mixing them in would have done so much to break up the monotony.

  • Albums have gotten much shorter in recent years because of the shift from CDs with an 80 minute time limit back to LPs with a 40 minute limit. As a general rule, I like that better - stressing quality over quantity. With bands like Gorillaz, Beastie Boys, The Voidz and Ween - with a very wide range of styles - I think the longer format often works better and allows for weird tracks that wouldn't make the album otherwise. As much as I like Cracker Island - my favorite since Plastic Beach - I wish it was weirder.

  • I liked this album quite a bit. Sounding safe is not a crime, they've been there before and the results are some nice, easy on the ears tracks. I'm sure Damon can and will deliver more whacky experimental Gorillaz stuff in the future, but this is still good.

  • Awesome review, Anthony. I was super looking forward to this album because I saw gorillaz live last year, and I saw a week after that show that they were coming out with this album, and I was so excited and I can say that I had a right to be because yes this album might not be a self titled a demon days or a plastic beach it is still some awesome music and I loved most of the tracks 😀

  • I'm pretty excited for whatever their preparing now. Taking from the fact they're going to Mumbai in the lore I would actually love to if they took inspiration from the local music and culture. Tbh this album wasn't too great. They started with some fire songs but it soon just had too much chill vibes. 7.5/10 in my opinion.
