Suzuki Sidekick P0300 Timing Chain Mystery Solved!!

In this one I figure out why a 1998 Suzuki Sidekick Sport with a 1.8 liter engine won't go over 55mph, and why all the cylinders are misfiring. With a recently installed timing chain, I didn't think that would be the problem, but an improperly installed timing chain can cause all kinds of issues. I'm just glad this engine didn't blow up in the process of discovering what was wrong!
Torque specs:
Cam sprocket bolts: 57.5 ft-lbs
Cam bearing caps: 106 in-lbs
Valve cover nuts: 96 in-lbs
Oil pan bolts/nuts: 96 in-lbs
Timing Cover bolts: 96 in-lbs
Small chain tensioner: bolts 96 in-lbs, nut 33 ft-lbs
Large chain tensioner: nut 18.5 ft-lbs, bolts 96 in-lbs
Chain guide bolts: 78 in-lbs
Crankshaft pulley bolt: 109 ft-lbs

  • I have made a habit, when working on anything, to take a bunch of photo before, and while I am working on anything. It helps stop things like forgetting the spacer. Not just cars, construction, etc. helpful at the store, or asking for help. Just covers a bunch of DIY sins and problems. 😆

  • I had an old Nissan truck that wasn't running well. The timing chain had skipped a tooth because the chain tensioner had come unbolted. Did the kit replacement and it ran great!

  • They need a new coolant temperature sensor too. It's nice to know if the engine is overheating.

  • I knew a guy who owned a transmission shop. He warned me not to buy a Suzuki Samurai because parts are almost impossible to find.

    • It can be difficult. I think it just depends on the part. There's a lot of aftermarket support for the Samauri, it has a pretty huge enthusiast following.

    • @@offroadhub.official I see a lot of Samurai owners who modify the heck out of the car. I think the car is so simple that might be easy, but I live in California so modifying is really difficult when it comes to the smog issue.
