  • Life is tough, even when you refuse to take responsibility for your own actions. If you can't keep track of your ammo before boarding TWO separate airplanes, I wonder if you are capable of tracking it at home where your toddler crawls around.

  • It's unfortunate, but if we expect foreigners to abide by our laws, and face the penalty for breaking them, then we to must accept the same conditions when traveling to another country. 12 years is excessive to us, but they don't want people taking bullets into their country, so they obviously hoped a 12 year sentence would stop someone from trying it. I think this story will make more travelers double check their bags if they are gun owners. Ignorance of the law is not a defense, so they say.

    • The thoughtlessness of the passenger in not checking his baggage was not only his fault but TSA's, as they admitted when they said they missed it. One should abide by foreign countries' laws, yes, but like so much in life, there exists a double-edged sword, as existence is so much more complex than we would like it to be. The irony here is that the twelve years is excessive for such a minor infraction, and that the prosecuting country/territory must pay for that person (assuming they don't pay bail and all extenuating charges) to remain there, thus making them a little poorer (after all, the person's home country would never pay for one of their citizens for committing crimes on land they don't own or control). When enough laws are excessive such as this, citizens from various parts of the world tend to boycott such an unfair nation by simply not visiting it, thus harming that nation's economy all the more. Gun owners should be more responsible if they use their carry-on bags for multiple purposes, which is on them. As for that old saying, ''ignorance of the law is not a defense for not knowing the law'' is from Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes from 1651, written at a time when there was a very high percentage of illiteracy and overall lack of education in England and most countries, where most countries didn't have free public schooling to educate their citizenry. Many countries have tens of thousands of laws, and no one knows them all by heart, not even lawyers (one of the dirty truths about lawyers is that they actually research laws they're unfamiliar with, or to remember the details about it ((see ''The Terrible Truth About Lawyers: How Lawyers Really Work and How to Deal With Them Successfully by Mark H. McCormack)). When a person takes the attitude that they should know every single law, it's the State's fault for failing to educate their citizenry on each and every one of those laws, inside and out, as no one of us is taught anywhere near enough on every single law in existence (as, to be fair, we must count every other country and territory). Therefore that line is one for an authoritarian or dictatorship, one who designs to control their citizenry, and not to be fair to them.

    • @@heathersmith6416 If twelve years is a reasonable time, then, as I said before, the individual citizen has the right to choose whether to visit another country/territory or not based on whether they as the individual agree with their laws--not visiting can be an act of protest when there are so many places to choose from, after all. Since you only said ''12 years is in fact a reasonable amount of time'' without quoting anything, I'll reasonably assume that is your individual belief, and not a particular State's law.

  • In ANY country with any modicum of Gun control, you are GOING TO JAIL for a fairly long period if you bring in a firearm OR even AMMUNITION. That is how sovereignty works. Sovereign nations make their own laws. Most are not countries where the leading cause of child death, is FIREARMS. If he was travelling to a country with similar gun laws... and there are NOT too many, but, if I recall correctly, Serbia has very liberal gun laws, as does San Marino (though Italy does NOT and you have to go through that country to enter San Marino), and I believe East Timor is a rather unique anomaly in so much as it has among the most liberal gun laws in the world, ranks in the top 5 on rightwing gun freedom index BS lists, but also ranks as third LOWEST gun ownership in the world despite this, well this might not happen. So, you know, like.... if you want, maybe you can, as red blooded American Ammosexual, go to one of those places, if you cannot keep track of your firearm related chattel? Anywhere else.... you are going to learn the hard way, how anomalous the US is re guns culture, when you wind up....well.... this, just like this, is how you wind up. American ethnocentrism leads so many American tourists to just NOT UNDERSTAND, that most places in the world have all kinds of laws MUCH different to the United States, and all too many take an entitled position of American Exceptionalism when they are forced to come to understanding when their ignorance bites them.
