Turbulent Touchdowns

Selected landings at BHX this winter on the more difficult days for the pilots. As usual, the problems mainly come not from the wind speed and direction but sudden changes in these. A couple of the shots are actually from 2014 but emphasize the bumpiness of the approach over the City at times.
The pilot of one of the landings here kindly made the following comment:
"The thing that makes BHX stand out from most other windy airports is the fact that the gusty, turbulent winds seem to persist all the way down to the runway. In most airports, the air seems to be a bit calmer once you enter the ground effect during the flare, but not in BHX. I'm not sure if this is caused by a lack of trees or some other specific terrain features in the area, but it makes the landings there quite a bit more interesting. These landings might look scary from the outside and trust me, it's a lot more challenging and stressful than landing in CAVOK wind calm conditions, but it's also the most fun you can have as a pilot."

  • As a pilot with low hours PPL and a few more in gliders, I'd like to make a few comments: 1) Really excellent photography, thank you! 2) The really high standard of training that these pilots have received to reach this level of skill. 3) The remarkable strength of the airframes and landing gear on these truly large craft ferrying MILLIONS of us around the world every day! 4) Probably the most critical factor that every heavy moving object is affected by is INERTIA! May I suggest that the undulations of the runway and adjoining terrain have a marked effect on the mass of air travelling past the airfield. You only have to watch an albatross using the updrafts generated by the slopes of waves to see this. I keep thinking the planning departments where the decision was made to develop AND EXPAND the site couldn't have had any pilots on their payroll! Season's Greetings. Keep up the good work :-)

    @DavidHP66@DavidHP667 жыл бұрын
    • This runway is not nearly as undulated as it seems from the video. The effect is greatly exaggerated by the low-level head-on view, the distance from the runway and the ultra-long reach telephoto lens.

    • 3.Yes, I used to be real scared that some parts of the wings would break off whenever I flew in Turbulent weather.I could see them swaying wildly at times in hurricane force winds unfortunately. One day, my friend who was an instrumentation engineer who happened to be in the next seat told me that those wings were real tough even though they seemed to bend with the wind and I needn't worry. That's awesome engineering up in the skies.

    • hah seriously, I'm a huge fan of super wavy rollercoaster runways in videos like this. I suspect that a lot of the bumpiest looking runways are actually the really long ones, cause the guy shooting the pictures can see more of them at once with his insane super telephoto lens, and with the really huge runways the photog is probably farther away and needs to zoom in even more, which exaggerates the bumps even more. In a little airport, you just get right up near the runway with a wide lens, and everything looks flat, even if the shabby regional airport is actually bumpier than the huge international runway that LOOKS wavy

  • I have to ask, do you do any post stabilization to this footage or does it come out of the camera this smooth? that would be one rock steady tripod

    @NathansVideos46@NathansVideos468 жыл бұрын
    • I think some manfrotto video tripods can be this smooth... But I have to say his filming is awesome!!!

    • +NathansVideos46 I often use post stabilization, particularly to reduce any rolling shutter 'wobble' if the camera's hit by a gust of wind.

    • Tripod fluid heads do not stabilize but they do make for smooth movement. Manfrotto not the best choice - a good 25 lb Schatler costs 16,000 - a stabilized Canon 40 x costs 70,000 - and you need an operator with the same skill as he pilots. I can fly like that - but not so good on the camera JR

  • All these planes are unstable because of the massive balls of the pilots who are flying with them.

    • Jonathan Edwards crazy how strong the wind is isn't it? A plane can have a groundspeed of zero if the wind is strong enough.
