UK passes controversial immigration Rwanda bill | BBC News

UK Parliament has passed PM Rishi Sunak's flagship Rwanda bill, after a late-night sitting and months of wrangling.
Plans to send some asylum seekers to Africa have met with fierce criticism, but the bill passed on Monday when the Lords dropped their opposition.
Sunak said in a statement "nothing will stand in our way" now of getting flights off the ground.
But the scheme could still be held up by challenges in the courts.

  • I don't know why nobody is talking about the financial incentive for Rwanda. The current government budget for Rwanda is $4.4b. Lets say Rwanda takes 50 000 migrants initially as planned that means for the initial batch Rwanda may receive up to $10.5b which is almost two and a half times the government spending. This is the new form of human trafficking. The only difference is that its done by a government.

    • It's a roundabout way to say "Look, we messed up when we made the original asylum laws and international laws century/centuries ago. We never thought millions of people will from poor countries will pack up their bags and arrive at our shores for economic migration, mixed in with people who actually urgently need asylum. Since deporting is illegal without processing their application first, which can take years, so we reduce the burden by using Rwanda as the intermediary host." Anyone genuinely seeking asylum won't mind waiting in a safe space in Rwanda but anyone seeking economic migration won't want to be stuck in Africa. Hence the deterrent.

However they sticks to their guns and would not be bullied by others telling them to run our country. It’s the only solution that’s had a modicum of success. But what happening now is people are arriving by air with visitors visa and a return ticket and then having the temerity to claim asylum once here. Also only a couple of months ago we had 2 boats arrive in the northern part of West Australia. The people were mainly from Pakistan. It seems that the government took the eye off the ball in terms of border control, and cut funding ! But that could cost re election at the next election. I have been here 35 years and have admired the Aussie government but the current one is the coming up short!

The logical solution is prevention of people from crossing borders and having a steadfast stance on not giving socialised care for ALL asylum seekers. The harsh reality is that Western countries cannot solve all the problems of the world. Resources are finite and the future unfortunately seems bleak with regards to uncontrolled migration further worsened due to climate change and economic instability in 3rd world countries.

After bleeding entire countries dry as an imperial power (they have amnesia about this of course) now they are unsatisfied when a few thousand people from other countries are seeking refuge there (not wealth but refuge). It is just outragious how much audacity they have.

  • Why should the UK depend on another country for handling its immigration problem for money? Great Britain has a lot of islands up to the north. Now, getting shipped there would have a huge deterrent effect - in addition, free of charge. The astronomical amount they are planning to spend would be enough to house all the homeless in England plus to improve their Navy to the level of catching anybody wanting to come illegally.

Those coming in to work illegally either arrive on planes and don't go home, or were trafficked in and don't actually get paid because the traffickers thought of your plan decades ago. Congratulations for belatedly coming up the same solution as people who think that sex slavery is a legitimate business plan.
