  • I truly believe there is a perfect gaussian relationship between climbing skill and the amount of climbing branded clothing someone wears, centred perfectly on a patagonia P-6 and a pair of prAnas/BD Notions. The absolute beasts at any gym are the ones who turn up in pyjama bottoms.

    • There's an old guy at a gym I rarely see who- barefoot- just casually sends all the hardest routes. He might hang overhead for a while like a spider, too. He did give me some nice advice that helped me, though, which was great. He's like almost 70, and holy smokes is that one fit granpa. I guess climbing consistently for more than twice as long as I've been alive gives one those extra fit points.

    • I went to a climbing gym on the insistence of a family member and the first thing I saw was a guy in nothing but a speedo practically running up the wall. I just walked out immediately and it took an hour of them saying "look this isn't what it looks like" in order for me to give the place a second chance.

    • Kind of. I mean…it’s great, but trad is not at all “just a bunch of boulders”…or however he said it. I mean…he even used The Nose / Freerider for the photo, where there is literally one spot called “the boulder problem”. The rest is nothing like bouldering. I guess it’s like saying: lifting 20 lbs 20 times, is the same as lifting 400 lbs once.

  • I tried those rock climbing walls (0:31) that are without safety rope. When I got high enough to get tired, I wanted to jump on the mats but the moment I looked down I understood what it's like to be a cat that stuck on the tree. Because as it turns out I have the fear of falling. What an experience it was xD

    • Yeah some bouldering gyms make really tall and dangerous boulders and don't even instruct new comers into how to handle the fall . Personally I'm not even a big fan of bouldering, I much rather climb with top rope, but boulders are popular and gyms should be a lot more responsible.

    • Even free soloing is not in here dangerous. It’s risky. You can control and mitigate most of those risks (know the grade, check the weather forecast, wear a helmet if there maybe falling rocks etc…) Truly dangerous activities are where there are risks over which you have little or no control. Cycling is much more dangerous than rock climbing.

  • Its because of this video i won first place in a bouldering competition (male intermediate category) I watched this video when i was in a severe depression and contemplated suicide every day. And because of this video i looked up rock climbing gyms near me and decided to go to this smallish local gym only a few miles from my house. 6 months later and Im standing on a podium for first place. For a few seconds I felt like the protagonist. I was doubting i would win all day, as the hours passed and more groups climed in the comp I felt I was going to be lucky to get even third place. I had even beaten someone who i had admired when i was a bit newer to climbing. I thought they were soo good and I was soo bad, i wanted to be as good as them so much. Fast foward a few months and im first and they aren't even on the podium. I went from a noob to a near v6 climber in 6 months

  • The first date I ever went on after HS was to a climbing gym, it was terrible. I mean, I had a great time climbing walls for 3 hours but there was literally zero time for the two of us to actually talk or get to know each other in any way other than "oh, looks like they can also climb rocks for 3 hours." There wasn't a second date. (Also the date location wasn't my idea)
