    • agree, Chabal hit you hard into the next day but also made sure it was legal, he wrapped and made sure if you went up you came down safe. The rest of the so called "feared" players were just dirty brawling violent hoodlums

    • @@v.german11b players that were equally as physical as him, usually owned him. He had a tendency to fade when he was put under pressure. Just have a look at what Lequizamon and Jerry Collins did to him - and just like that he was nowhere in the games. He based most of his reputation for one or 2 string tackles and a WC try against Namibia. Sorry, I don't rate him as a "hard man". The real hard men of rugby would've eaten him for breakfast.

  • My old Rugby Coach played with Botha on the International Circuit and said he was the nicest guy in the world until he stepped onto the pitch. He said it was like a switch got turned on in his head and you could just tell he wasn't going to be happy until he buried the entire opposing team including their fans!

  • I'm French and i love Chabal but Jonah Lomu should be Number one.Lomu had a unique combination of power, size and speed that made him devastating with the ball in hand. He weighed 120 kg and was 1.96 metres tall, but could run 100 metres in 10.8 seconds.

  • I'm Canadian and grew up with hockey, I literally learned to skate and play on a pond in my backyard. Hockey is without a doubt one of the fastest brutal team sports there is; however, I've just discovered Rugby and man talk about aggressive and brutal, it's a blast to watch.

  • No need to fear dirty players. They will end up getting carded and ruin the game for their team. As a french i was fearing Lomu because he was not only a beast, he was incredibly efficient. Chabal was fun but did not contribute nearly as much as Lomu. He was the most feared guy to play against in my memory.

  • Sure Jonah Lomu was probably in the top 3 rugby players of any era but to my mind not one of those players who would unleash bone crushing tackles. Lomu would either run through or over the opposition. Also include Etzebeth and Botha in this category. They are more prone to lose control in skirmishes and therefore looked intimidating but mostly you don't see them flying horizontal into the opposition. The top five rarely scary enforcers would be Chabal, Collins, Tuilagi, Tuisova and Burger.

    • Jerry was hard as nails but I cant see Bakkies fearing anybody but God.He was a doorman straight from school bashing peoples brains out every night and Bernard Laporte said he was the strongest player he ever saw, no wonder every team he played for won every trophy.

  • I thought I recognised him. Sebastian Chabal met his Equalizer in Jerry Collins. Chabal had the ball Jerry came for him, and Chabal got rid of the ball quick smart and melted to the floor so the he didn't get hit. Jerry marked him once his reputation got built up. Jerry Collins, Tana Umaga, Richie McCaw... These were the names and faces I remember, and they all hit like tanks!
