Antique Centrifugal Dental Casting Machine [Restoration]
This restoration is on a 1930s dental casting machine made by the Torit Manufacturing Co. of St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. I was unable to find a photo of this model with the exact same base design, but similar designs exist. This machine would most likely be used for casting gold teeth and fillings.
The base was extremely rusty, but all other parts are made of aluminum or brass, so they held together much better over the years. I decided to use babbitt as a casting metal since it melts at such a low temperature and isn't very expensive. This was my first time casting any metal on my own and learning the process was a lot of fun.
It's nice to see this tool back in service and spinning molten metal very close to your face at high speed.

Easily my favorite Centrifugal Dental Casting Machine Restoration on KZhead.
I’m glad he finally caved into the enormous pressure from the public to tackle this
Difficult to chose one but yes, this one is the best !
They other one the other guy did was way better.
Personally I find the Centrifugal Dental Casting Machine Restoration video scene to be over saturated but HtR certainly tries to bring something new and fresh to it.
😂😂😂
That intro never gets old.
Just his facial expressions crack me up every time and when he slams his face on the sand blaster
And I’m really happy that my buddy Garbage on the floor is back.
@@dem0nchild610there’s a vid on his channel that’s amazing it’s an extended length intro. Like 3 minutes long I believe.
Yup
@@arichy4201 o: I'm watching that later lol
Frame perfect restoration!
Literally two days ago, when I visited my father, who is a dental technician, I told him that his casting machine (she is old but not THAT old) sounds weird and probably needs some repairs (bearings change and so on). I have to show him this old piece of wonder, it is brilliant
Be sure to give an update!
Yes they figured out pretty quick they work better horizontally. You can put it in a big bowl and no molten metal goes flying into the whole room
Scale 1:5 of the big brother😄 Awesome job as always
It took a while for me too get it on that frame on my phone.
ONE FRAME
Yeah, I had to use an addon that lets me go forwards or backwards by single frames to catch it.
@@RollingThunder2020 Try the < and > keys
@@OperatorIHC Thanks took 5 min of pausing at the right second (or millisecond) to get it.
Super pleased to see Garbage on the Floor is back from their hiatus. So excited to have them back on the show, the character development has been so strong with them!
love that little easter egg at the end 😁 your intro and your complicated relationship with your sandblasting cabin get me every time. I really love the humour you bring to your videos ❤️
I wasn't able to get the single frame and I be very grateful if you could tell me what it was because I have played 23:18-23:19 for almost an hour trying to get it paused perfectly I just wish that KZhead had a frame by frame and/or a slow-mo function my ocd won't let me stop until I know what it is
@@danielbueche5686 There is a playback speed setting on youtube. Its under the little gear icon.
@@danielbueche5686 you can also pause and use the < and > keys to move forward and back frame by frame. It only showed the 1/5 th scale relation of the big brother of the smallest one he made before.
Can we take a moment to acknowledge the man licked a wire wheel? What a mad lad
I almost cringed watching that...almost!!
@@strydr36 Audible gasp on my part.
I watched it 4 times waiting to see blood.
Nope, that didn’t actually occur. It was CGI (computer Generated Imagery)……haven’t you seen his other YT channel where he does this stuff?
I'm amazed you havnt hit a mill subs. Im sure you will soon. Hands down the best restoration KZheadr. Have loved your vids for years now. So many cool tools I'd never know exist if it weren't for you. Thanks
Maybe one day!
@@HandToolRescue Amazing finding and restoring all these cool tools. @16:45 Is that a tiny flashlight? Uh I mean flesh not flash. Is that a hand tool you'll restore one day?
Well... He did. Awesome right?
Well well well...look who has egg on their face.
This aged well@@HandToolRescue
Been waiting so long for a centrifugal dental casting machine restoration to come along!! Performed with brilliance and panache as always. Thanks.
I know! Right? There are so many of these sitting around in disrepair. ; )
That's what I love about your channel; you find the absolute strangest, most compelling stuff to work on. It's like a train wreck in reverse.
I almost missed the @mymechanics reference for that one frame at 23:19, where he made a very similar wrench.
Definitely a good reference. I knew it was an easter egg. Had to pause and go back frame by frame to see it.
I saw it as well and was not sure if it was "Hand Tool Rescue" that put it there or if it was some sort of hacker thing. I saw similar but nonsensical flashes in another channel and it has been bothering me ever since. I'm guessing since "Hand Tool Rescue" liked your comment it was intentional at least on this channel. I don't like this because it detract from the content by making me single step through the video to figure out what was shown.
Hey, it's been a while. You're the ONLY restorer on the Tube that has a sense of humor. Glad to see you're back!
The forehead thump into the sand blaster is my favorite thing
About time the garbage on the floor makes a comeback. Best part of this show, hands down.
Hooray! Thank you for letting the Garbage on the Floor make an appearance in the intro again. :D
Single frame "scale 1:5 of the big brother" at 23:19 really helped
Yes! I was winding this back like the Zapruder film.
I saw that too
I think someone watched fight club recently
Great channel, Great restorations of old and forgotten tools, love the humor you bring and happy your wife hasn't killed you. Because of you I can now change blades in my box cutter... no more 5 time use. You've given me confidence to restore my #6 Allen wrench next year. Until then Keep the awesome videos coming. Thank you
I never watched an entire hand tool rescue video, I allways fall asleep ten minutes in because it's so satisfying and calming
Hand Tool Rescue is great and I like to watch it regularly.
I LOVE this show! It's the best show on KZhead! Can we get it nominated for an Emmy?
My dad was a dentist. Had one of these to make my mom custom jewelry all the time. "spinning molten metal very close to your face at high speed." - That's the best part!!!
hands down, best restoration channel, tool channel, shop channel on youtube.
The only intro I don’t skip.
The very subtle edit around 3:15 is gold.
My dad had one of these in his dental lab when i was a kid. I would play with it. These tools are amazing even to this day.
I will share with my grandchildren that I saw the most accurate hole drilled OF ALL TIME!
I was able to SLO-Mo (@ 23:19 ) and see the "scale size" slide! 🤣 The "Dad" came out in me when you touched your tongue to the wheel; I yelled, "NOOOooo!!!!" 🤣🤣🤣
Just remember if you're playing along at home, wear eye protection if you lick the wire wheel
This guy rescued that hand tool!!!
Please post the Year these CoNtRaPtIoNs you find are built . It is a testimony of our struggle to invent a better mouse trap. THANKS AS ALWAYS!!!
9 out of 10 dentists agree that watching a Hand Tool Rescue video contributes to a lasting smile!
What a neat, weird and smart machine. I am not an "old tool" guy, but this I would gladly have on display.
And what a neat, weird and smart...ish mechanic... =)
Do you collect? What's your collection? Always curious to see what other folks find interest in.
I don't think he likes being called an old tool.
This tool seems like it could quickly transform from a centrifugal casting machine into a molten metal sprinkler. You could therefore advertise it as a multi tool!
My high school had one of these in the jewellery class, but bigger and horizontal. One kid didn't put enough plaster in the mold, so the bottom gave out as it spun and threw molten silver into the wall, which then sprayed me. Didn't hurt nearly as much as I expected, but I was still quite annoyed.
That happened in a jewelry class in college. One kid had the their mold blow out during casting. This was on a more modern horizontal machine and it had a big metal shield around it so nobody was hurt. Turned out they'd dropped the mold taking it out of the burnout oven. It looked ok so they didn't say anything. But investment is fragile and easily damaged once its burnt out. I've used a hand sling centrifuge that a buddy got at a dentist's estate sale but I've never seen a vertical casting machine like this before. I agree it could easily become a metal sprinkler in the wrong hands :)
I have never seen a better centrifugal dental casting machine restoration.
This channel has THE ABSOLUTE GREATEST intro & theme song. Takes me right back to the 80s
I really appreciate you demonstrating how the tools you restore would have been used because I was completely clueless until you showed it in action.
In the early part of the 20th century painting brass medical equipment was done fro ease of cleaning. Brass may be a beautiful metal, but it is not a good choice for a clean/sterile environment.
Always excited about your encounter with the sand blasting cabinet, seems like a complex relationship.
Excellent, as usual. I couldn't believe the off-center hole in that beautiful part you were making until you revealed that it was just a counter- weight, and it would never matter or be noticed. You always get it right. Well done.
My son said you now need to make custom monopoly pieces with that. Shaped like everyone’s favorite restoration projects.
7:05 Usually you'd have to double-dog-dare something like this, but HTR just goes for it.
You are a bad M/Fer for sure! ONLY one I EVER seen lick a spinning wire wheel. You are the MAN!
Now you can open up that dental clinic you've always wanted to do!
Fantastic video and explanation through the moulding processes. Thank you!
I’ve never seen a better restoration of a dental casting machine! Great job! 👍🏻👍🏻
Always good to see tools being re-sensualised.
Te sigo... desde tus inicios , no me pierdo ni un sólo vídeo. Te Felicito por la elaboración y evolución. Saludos desde Argentina.
That was a very nice Tyler Darden-esque frame insertion @ 23:19 . Kudos. There will always be only one true rescue/ restoration channel.
Damn, son, you're getting close to a million!! Love your channel...
as a dental tech who still uses a broken arm centrifugal casting machine and a fan of your channel, this video excites the hell out of me.
I always get excited when you release a new video. Another awesome video. Thank you!
When do we get the video of each *thunk* in one big collection? ;) Really nice videos and style you have, I really enjoy seeing your fun antics as you work on them as I'm sure so many others do. Keep up the great work!
Lol by far the most entertaining restoration channel. The intros and bits just make that much more watchable.
This is the second most entertaining dental casting machine restoration I have EVER seen.
Oh my Word , you really got me on this one. I had never seen nor ever heard about one of these. As most people don't know, I grew up seeing an knowing about alot of the wonderful items you share with us due to family. This was so awesome I loved this alot it was so cool. Thank you so much for Sharing.im ready for more.
Now you must make this tiny key functional ! Thank you for your work and humor.
Ho une arnaque !
I work at a dental implant lab that's going to get a kick out of this!
That machine and part you made both came out looking great…..you do some really nice work 👍 A lot of knowledge has to be known to be able to accomplish what you did🙂👌
Absolutely the best asmr channel ever! Great job as always
Between Instagram stories and KZhead I'm always thoroughly entertained htr! Thanks
what a piece of multimedia gem you give us, and the restoration, awesome as usual!! great machine btw
that 1/5 scale model at 23:19 is a beauty.
Oooh. The new, more intimate Hand Tool Rescue!
Você é o melhor parabéns muito bom excelente restauração
The immense pleasure of tonguing your own equipment!
Favorite channel! The personality shines !
I love the single frame clip at 23:19! I had to rewind it like 6 times before I managed to pause it in time to see what it was lol! I’m just glad it wasn’t a surprise like at the end of Fightclub 🤣
Ah! I knew it wasn't just static! I tried slowing and pausing but I can't grab it. What does it say?
@@dianemcarthur9653 Go to settings on the KZhead screen. change it to 0.25 playback speed. start just before 23.19 and go frame by frame with the play/pause button. It's just his comparison between his normal sized adjustable wrench and the tiny one he made in an earlier video. Cheers from Guam USA👍
if you pause the video, you can use the comma and period keys to move frame by frame
Sand blasting cabinet got shown no quarter today!
Babe wake up, there's a new Hand Tool Rescue video
And that's how baby wrenches are made. One day, it will be all grown up and help to restore another tool. The cycle of life never ceases to amaze me.
THANK YOU for doing this video and normal speed.
Hey cool! I've used bigger versions of this exact unit before. They were horizontal rather than vertical. Definitely used for Dental work, or small jewelers work such as rings.
The jewellers centrifuges I've used were also horizontal, and spinning before you start pouring into a central "cup" on the rotating axle.
Sweet resto! I love casting equipment! This antique rig is awesome! Nice lil wrench ya made! It'll make a nice charm or pendant! Maybe even convert it to a tooth pick!
That is a great unit for making the weapons used in the game CLUE. the lead pipe, candle stick, dagger, lead pipe and you already have the wrench. Good on ya. Cheers
What an amazing video, I'm always excited to watch the new videos.
..........okay, i had NO idea how many Centrifugal Dental Casting Machines were on youtube, this is still the best...out of....quite a few
The Sandblaster face smash gets me every time hahahahaha!!! Nice dude, that was cool.
Awesome video - really like the restoration and how you demonstrated the original operation of the device. Awesome video! 👍
Brother If ever I'm having a bad day just your sitcomesqe intro turns my day around. Hilarious and informative like an after-school special 🤣 keep it up.
Pretty amazing device 👌
Cheers. Your smile cracks me up every time.
I work in the dental industry and I have seen these packed away in cupboards of old labs and dental offices. But many times the crucible is missing or cracked. You have one that isn't. Fortunate for you.
You are very creative friends, keep working by sharing knowledge your other knowledge that is entertaining and useful for many people.
Without doubt the weirdest resto channel on the 'tube. Keep up the good work.
Litteraly just thinking about when the man the myth the legend would post another great adventure, I am pleased
Superb find to restore.
I didn't even know machinery for such a purpose existed until this video. Well done as usual.
What a wild and crazy machine that is. I can just see several of them in a dentist's office all whirling around filled with molten metal, nothing dangerous there. Great job on it.
The best channel on youtube man always crack me up too 😁
Can't wait for the workbench restoration video!
Genius invention
Thanks Eric. 🙂👍
This is going to save me so much on dental work.
I'm starting to think the next restoration needs to be a lathe. Probably one just slightly beefier than this one... Amazing work on this spin cast tool!
I look forward to your videos. Another great restoration. ~Kevin
Love the close up camera. Your craft is evolving sir!!
im suprised that it is in such a good shape considering the age, realy high quality
Just made my entire Sunday 🙂
always enjoyable. Another great job buddy.
Love watching your channel. Wish you put your videos out more often!
