Antique Centrifugal Dental Casting Machine [Restoration]

This restoration is on a 1930s dental casting machine made by the Torit Manufacturing Co. of St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. I was unable to find a photo of this model with the exact same base design, but similar designs exist. This machine would most likely be used for casting gold teeth and fillings.
The base was extremely rusty, but all other parts are made of aluminum or brass, so they held together much better over the years. I decided to use babbitt as a casting metal since it melts at such a low temperature and isn't very expensive. This was my first time casting any metal on my own and learning the process was a lot of fun.
It's nice to see this tool back in service and spinning molten metal very close to your face at high speed.
Wrenches, screwdrivers, and socket drivers are now for sale at www.handtoolrescue.com

I saw similar but nonsensical flashes in another channel and it has been bothering me ever since. I'm guessing since "Hand Tool Rescue" liked your comment it was intentional at least on this channel. I don't like this because it detract from the content by making me single step through the video to figure out what was shown.

    • My high school had one of these in the jewellery class, but bigger and horizontal. One kid didn't put enough plaster in the mold, so the bottom gave out as it spun and threw molten silver into the wall, which then sprayed me. Didn't hurt nearly as much as I expected, but I was still quite annoyed.

      @Halinspark@Halinspark Жыл бұрын
    • That happened in a jewelry class in college. One kid had the their mold blow out during casting. This was on a more modern horizontal machine and it had a big metal shield around it so nobody was hurt. Turned out they'd dropped the mold taking it out of the burnout oven. It looked ok so they didn't say anything. But investment is fragile and easily damaged once its burnt out. I've used a hand sling centrifuge that a buddy got at a dentist's estate sale but I've never seen a vertical casting machine like this before. I agree it could easily become a metal sprinkler in the wrong hands :)
