Y'all have no idea how tempting it was to post a screenshot of the "are you sure you want to permanently delete this file" dialog :3c
The only version of Minecraft I can see us getting now is 0.0.14a_07 It was only up for 5 to 7 minutes and only one screenshot exists. I consider that version the holy grail due to the timing of when it was up.
@@biscuits3988 false, it was out for 2 hours and 7 minutes
That one button could have changed history forever...
I know it's late, but happy pride!
In this thread: "How she collectively could have given a dozen people heart attacks all at the same time" 😂
"And then... she deleted it." That had me so scared LMFAOO
I had no expression. In the video he literally showed scenes of 1.1.1 that he recorded. That means it wasn't deleted so I wasn't surprised.
WHY ARE YOU EVERYWHERE
Seriously you're everywhere now you're everywhere I go you're just like OwO Justin Y and Christopher Moon
would be a good meme, ngl
me too, up until this point I honestly didn't even care that much about it, but when he said that my heart sank out of my chest and my brain began racing to try and understand the meaning of his words, then a moment later he said just kidding and I felt like I had face planted
Another fact about Alpha 1.1.1: This was the first and only update to include Notch's own experimental calm4.ogg music file. It was removed from the game download upon release of Alpha 1.1.2, however those who had already downloaded Alpha 1.1.1 would still hear calm4.ogg being played, since the update didn't remove it for players that already had it. This is quite the monumental discovery indeed. Thank you for the detailed and informative video!
Unfortunately, I believe the Wiki’s info on this is incorrect. I think calm4 was around c0.0.23a, but it was quickly overwritten by calm2
@@AntVenom thanks antVenom for the pog video
@@AntVenom Hmm I didn't know...it's not every day that the wiki is incorrect. Thanks for the correction!
@@AntVenom I did some searching, and the wiki's page on Classic 0.0.22a (not 0.0.23a) does mention the addition of calm4.ogg to the game. So it appears there is a major inconsistency in the wiki regarding this topic, since two other pages ("Java Edition Removed Features" and "Music") say it was added in Alpha 1.1.1 and removed in Alpha 1.1.2.
@@CaveMiner1215 yeah, those two pages are outdated. If you go on the alpha 1.1.1 page, it doesn't mention the addition of calm4. It takes time to update the history parts of the wiki after we discover new information.
Absolutely fascinating to think that Luna was probably the only person in the world with that specific copy with those specific bytes of code that nobody else had. That's probably an exaggeration, but it's still incredibly lucky to find someone that has that specific version for the time it was up, especially considering people's hard drives have died or people have deleted it it in the time it took.

Hi anthony
How finding a useless version made 10 years ago huge?! Sometimes I can't understand the thinking behind this
the guy who found it earned an "Archievement"
yes
if this video made you interested in getting better at backing up your stuff, here's an easy rule to follow: the 3-2-1 rule. you should have 3 copies of anything you want to save on at least 2 different types of media (think hdd versus ssd) and one backup should be in a separate location (in case the worst case scenario happens and your house burns or floods or something). If you do this and keep your backups up to date you're much less likely to lose important files than the average person.
Add a 4- to the beginning, meaning you should have 4 different internets on 4 different planets. Just incase a solar flare happens.
@@asheep7797 ofc
@@asheep7797 add a 5 before that, you should have 5 alternate universe versions of yourself follow the rule
@@williambrown2135add a six before that, make 6 dimensions of 5 different universes just in case mass existential destruction happens
and a 4 meaning it shuld be on 4 difrent distributed file storing networks(bittorrent , IPFS, Filecoin, gnutella) along with a 5 meaning 5 difrent computers hosting that file on the p2p neworks and a 6 meaning 6 difrent difrent centralizsed hosting providers(aws, google cloud, azure, ploxhost, and some others)

Man, as nice as a video as this was, I feel you missed out on the best way to wrap it up. Decompiling alpha v1.1.1 and comparing it to alpha v1.1.2, and then comparing the nature of the bug that made Notch push out the update. I mean, bugs are meant to stick around and be hard to extinguish, so I feel the world deserves a post-mortem of the bug that became a part of legend.
"And then, she deleted it" gave me a heart attack, glad it was found! Goes to show how a random tweet from 11 years ago can be so beneficial to the archival community

Incredible story, I wonder when EVERYONE is gonna understand the importance of archiving software just as they preserver historic remains in real life.
Probably well after it's too late for a significant amount of software of greater importance than old versions of videogames
That was actually incredible, not just the whole story/build-up to the big reveal itself, but that moment you all just stood around in Multiplayer on Alpha 1.1.1 with Luna herself right there, none of that would've been possible without her discovery!🤯👍👏

This prompted me to try Alpha 1.1.2 on the minecraft launcher and I discovered that it's also pretty broken. The shadow for dropped items appears like 16 times on a block for some reason and saplings also drop randomly from trees that haven't been cut down.

@ad but he did, u replyed just now
@ad I can promise you I did watch it. Since I was apart of the video, I was able to see a "sneak peak" but I still wanted to be here when it officially releases.
It's all good, no worries.
XELANATER
I didn't know Moresteck also is part of the omni archive team. He developed the beta craft launcher that I use to play old minecraft versions which are not available in the official launcher. As soon as I found an internet article that said alpha 1.1.1 has been found I immediately checked the launcher to see if the beta craft team already added this version.
This is exactly why i want to be able to go back in time. To preserve lost media or to observe and document lost events to history and get it on tape if possible. I want to be an observer of the past, not one to actively try and change it.
TFW when one random tweet Luna made 11 years ago would lead to Omniarchive finding Alpha 1.1.1
.
At this point, Minecrafters will probably find the Aether Dimension in Vanilla Minecraft
It actually kind of exists.
@@David_Granger explain
Uhh have you heard of 1.16 april fools update: Infinite dimension
314rft is in the process of that
@@lasercat538 notch did develop a sky dimension with the Aether-developer from which alpha versions you can find in beta 1.6.4, 1.7.3 and 1.8.1. you need to modify the jar to get to it. The code was eventually used to create the end, that's the reason some still call the end a sky dimension.

Man it's cool af to see these old versions of minecraft. I started playing on classic in the browser and bought the game in alpha at some point when it was cheap and I can't believe there's been over a decade of minecraft already.
This is an update that introduced our universal peace symbol in servers as well as other core mechanics, yet the version was lost for years. It's incredible how history can be lost then found again
Oh my gosh the grey screen apocalypse, that takes me back! I remember hearing about it and seeing this exact image
atleast there is a fix
It's great to hear you can relive this visual bug whenever you want now with the archive downloaded.
The fact that we've gotten into a point in time where we're uncovering Minecraft's past like archaeologists and historians....man I feel old LOL
I started playing in 2012, so, although I wasn't particularly early, Minecraft has still been part of my life for more than 9 years. Seeing tweets about the first alpha version the day it came out, and more importantly seeing those people actually find and archive that early version of the game is just... so fucking cool.
The alpha days was possibly one of the most remembering charms of the entire game. The bright green grass, the music. Everything about alpha seemed almost perfect.
The saturated textures are the best, in my opinion
How you said you started in alpha, I personally started playing when I was three or four on an iPad;so around late beta to early release versions and you can not tell me they weren’t the glory days of mc

This is such an discovery ! This is why I love this game, there are more and more secrets to find
I wish I had gotten into video making back in these days rather than the 2015-2019 era when interest was at an all time low. I was still playing the game way back then, but didn't have the means or the know-how to production. Videos from then feel so homely and nostalgic compared to modern releases
I was in OmniArchive when this happened, amazing achievement, congrats to those who did it!
Epic video, didn't realize before how much effort it took to find this version.
glad your channel didnt suffer the same fate as others from your time, great documentaries as always
Wow, I didn't expect a polish forum to make it into this kind of video. But it's true that it archives threads from the past 10+ years, so I guess there's a lot of stuff in there that could be interesting.
On the one hand, I'm impressed that they did it. On the other hand, I'm chuckling at the fact that they spent years searching for a version of the game that got discarded because of a crippling bug and quickly replaced. But hey, I guess that's how the game works.

What are the others versions
3:42 I know how this feels
Fun Fact: After Beta 1.9 Prerelease 6, every Pre-release that came after it was just the version number for the regular version. For Example: The Next Pre-release to come after Beta 1.9 Prerelease 6 was 1.2, which is why 1.2.1 is the full release instead of 1.2. This Pre-release format was kept all the way until 1.7.6 when for the first time since Beta 1.9, a pre-release wasn't known as 1.X.Y, but instead 1.X.Y-preZ (1.7.6-pre1 in this case.).
bro luna has to be one of the most patient people to not only respond to them *and* update them, but also rummage through old hard drives just to find it.
The time archive shows 21:53 = 9:53 p.m. not 8:53 p.m. I'm not surprised by the miss... translation?, conversion?, but regardless is a common occurence. For anyone who doesn't use the 24 hour clock, often called military time, just subtract 12 from the hour slot. Hope you find that trick useful :D
