He wasn't extremely malicious or looking to hunt you down and kill you, he was just an explanation for why torches were disappearing, the cave noises, or how a bunch of structures were found due to the randomness of world generation and how the save files worked. I don't like the whole concept that he's a demon trying to kill you or something, I like to think he just possessed worlds and spooked players with unexplainable encounters

  • Two different things to consider. There was a glitch in the indev and alpha builds that would replace the skin of some mobs with the player standard skin There were also problems with torches suddenly vanishing world generation when a player updated their world. These problems however were solved or mostly well before the official release however. Sometimes when they were solving a problem with skin or texture rendering they would refer to it as removing herobrine and notch later said so himself.

For example some zombie to bug out and use the default skin plus that bug with the white dots to like occur on the eyes for some reason, and basically create the "white eyes" and after that the thing with the torches to start happening. That basically explains a lot.

  • Funny thing is, there was a player on the server I play on in 2015 who almost got banned because he unintentionally started the belief that our server was haunted by Herobrine. He didn't even realize it, he just had the habit of making really long and very straight 2x2 tunnels that he would replace mined out rocks on the side and would take the torches back when he was done. In itself not very odd but he dug a *lot* of tunnels so it was a pretty common occurrence that someone would come across one and get freaked out by it. I knew about his tunneling because he popped up right next to my house once trying to figure out what he ran into (our server has towny). One of the older mods decided to also play some random pranks around the same time involving random stuff like cobble pillars with lit netherrack on the top that they would relight with lightning when someone would try to put it out, random cobblestone structures, and leaf stripping trees. That mod also usually played hidden (we joke that they are the ghost of the server) so the weird stuff would often happen and no one would figure it out. I also knew about the mod doing that stuff just from obeservation and the fact that if you called them out by name they would always respond. The admin actually got really concerned and confused about it and when he asked me if I knew what was going on and that if whoever was doing this was being malicious because several of the younger players were genuinely scared and didn't want to get back on as long as "Herobrine might get them". I hadn't realized how bad it was since I kind of was already in the know but I explained everything I knew and that neither the player or mod were really being malicious, just very bad timing. Everything got sorted in the end and that is really what pushed for our server to have a better system of communication. Now everyone on the server are just used to finding random tunnels all over although he usually does 3x3 tunnels these days. 😂

I wouldn't be surprised if the myth of Herobrine started from something mundane like you're describing. Whether it was pranksters, people having weird tunneling habits, or server admins pulling pranks.

    • @urphakeandgey6308 Yeah, that is something I had always wondered. At the time all this was going on I was already pretty aware of a lot of the minecraft creepy pastas and such because I quite often wandered into the weird side of KZhead. But for a lot of the younger players they were just starting to hear about it and didn't really know much about it except for what the most popular current story about it was at the time. So a lot of younger players didn't really know that it was made up and really did think it was real because of how it was portrayed. But over the years I have seen a lot of different variations of the Herobrine portrayal/theory and it does have a tendency to shift drastically depending on where *exacty* you hear it from.

      @SilverScaleMA@SilverScaleMA2 ай бұрын
  • I think one of the most interesting aspects of stories like this is the fact that the original creators are just entirely unknown. And that applies to any and all online myths, creepypasta, etc. In an age where everything exists forever on the internet, it's kind of wild to think that those who were once so heavily involved in the community that they inspired an entire movement that is an integral part of the game's history, just.. don't know what they did? Like, what are they doing now? Were they just young kids having fun, and when life caught up with them, they moved on from it all and never happened to look back? Did they live under circumstances were one day they were just unable to have computer/internet access? Did they just stop caring? It's all so interesting. You would think by now we would have dozens of people claiming to be these users. But so far, not a peep. The other possibility is that they've kept their silence all these years in dedication to the bit. I which case, mad props to that determination. Instead of claiming their 15 minutes of fame, they're allowing an internet legend to live on in mystery and, in essence, keeping it alive. I seriously respect that kind of commitment. I do hope they come forward some day. It's still a part of Minecraft history, and digging into the origins of these legends is still interesting. I think it okay for them to make themselves known at this point and tell their stories, now that it's the people themselves asking them to. -oh and i guess the third possibility is that they are dead, but that isnt nearly as fun to wonder about-

  • My favorite stories or "sightings" about White Eyes and Herobrine tend to be the ones where neither is hostile, or at least don't seem to be, but instead enjoy causing anomalies around the player's world, and creepily observing from the shadows. I'm inclined to form a head canon of these two entities coexisting. At 18:10 we see both White Eyes and Herobrine meeting, while Herobrine walks away leaving White Eyes behind. What if White Eyes prefers to only lurk inside dark caves, while Herobrine doesn't mind being in the light, just like a regular player? Maybe they've arrived to an understanding of some sort, and agreed that Herobrine would be in charge of observing the player in most places, dark or otherwise, while White Eyes would inhabit the dark places. Or maybe it wasn't a deal at all, but a threat. Maybe Herobrine, being perhaps more evil than White Eyes, forbade her from showing herself to a player or to mess with their world ever again, since he wanted to be the sole creepy watcher and NPC builder/destroyer of the game. And for 13 years, he has had his way. Could our discovery of White Eyes tilt the scales and allow for her to be on equal grounds with Herobrine again, even if just from the shadows?

  • As someone into theology/anthropology, it's neat how the creation of Herobrine parallels the development of many gods and myths. Unclear original creators whose origins can only be inferred via their retellings create a prototypical version of the myth that people know now. That myth then gets retold and used as inspiration for another myth that gets popular and ends up sticking in the public conscious because all of its lore is way, WAY better preserved.

  • Before Herobrine existed there was a bug in Minecraft where generating a new world might cause some chunks from your old world to spawn. People might find parts of buildings or tunnels with torches in them that they had actually created previously on a different world but didn't remember because it was out of place. This sparked post of people claiming to have found structure built in their world that they didn't build. Most I'm sure we're completely fake. Many of the post showcased elaborate structures that appeared out of "nowhere". Lots of structures that Herobrine was originally attributed to actually come from these earlier posts including the pyramid and the 2x2 tunnel. Eventually these posts turned towards who built the structures and that's the beginning of Herobrine. By the way Herobrine means unknown in swedish.

I've done a research on Herobrine where story come from, I've realized the same thing as @TheMisterEpic, the fact that Herobrine isn't the original. I'm impressed because @TheMisterEpic found how Herobrine was conceptualized. My research was saved to txt files, timelines of events with links, it was on my computer, which I currently unable to access, I'm sad that my computer was damaged. During my research, I think I've encountered across some White Eyes threads, but I didn't bother to research further because I've found the origin of screenshot, I'm satisfied. Our minds create imagination to keep ourselves from feeling alone in the vast empty world and the conditions were just so perfect for that figment of that imagination to manifest. Now after years of change in the game's atmosphere. It's too cute and populated now to ever be that scary again. That charm is lost forever. Kids these days really missed out on this playing pretend something unknown stalking you in a lonely sandbox world.

  • I've actually heard about White Eyes before on another Minecraft video weeks back (I forget who made it), and it's also brought up on the Minecraft Wiki page for Herobrine, listing it as a predecessor to the Herobrine story. I have reason to believe that Herobrine was likely a spin-off or alternate take on the White Eyes story, becoming the popular version thanks to the Copeland stream. It's not surprising, considering White Eyes was barely known outside the Minecraft Forums, which at the time was the only major MC community, given the game was still small and niche and had yet to gain the mass popularity it has now. As for who made it, I only started playing Minecraft in 2012, and wasn't part of any MC communities at the time, not learning about Herobrine until some time later, so I can't say for certain who made it. But whoever did, they probably didn't know how big of a storm would come from it.

    • Minecraft and lore is... a bit of a weird relation. The devs definitely do intend to have lore, with all the generated structures and interconnected items and such, but at the same time they very apparently try (and repeatedly stated that they want) to design all these aspects such that the lore is something the players themselves decide upon. They make a solid framework for interpreting your own lore into the game. I'm pretty sure even the Ender Dragon's name (and thus gender) was never intended to be a canon statement (and thus isn't).

  • I really hope the original copeland stream is still out there somewhere. Copeland himself has said that he no longer has it, but maybe someone else happened to be screen recording and captured it and the video is still on someone’s hard drive. Its probably the main reason the myth gained so much popularity, so its an incredibly significant relic of minecraft history. Itd be super cool if we found it somewhere and uploaded it so everyone could see the stream that started it all

  • Incredible work! I loved the storytelling and the scenes! All the explanations were so clear, and it’s crazy to me how white eyes was just thrown to history, yet being the biggest source to herobrine out there. The cave disc part was so chilling and felt like a horror movie. Your gonna make it big someday, keep up the good work!!

  • It would be hilarious if in like.. either an April fools update, or a few select snapshots, Mojang added a Herobrine model that did nothing but rarely appear when players turn their camera before quickly disappearing. Or something like Odin appearing in Valheim, and if you get too close it’ll say “Herobrine has left the server” or something like that in chat. Just an extra cheeky nudge nudge from the developers for those who play snapshots. And when I say rare I mean RARE. even if it were like a 0.0001% chance, that’s still a little high considering it’s whenever you turn your camera, and there are MILLIONS of people who play the game. It’d be too common comparatively.

  • Thing is, back in the day, creepypasta wasn't uncommon. There were dozens of creepypasta around about Minecraft in Alpha. Internet trolling was a different kind of thing too. White Eyes -> Herobrine was the one that took off, the snowballing concept because it was the one that had the best "irrefutability". Even those of us who weren't part of the original story conception caught on and either amplified it or tried to diminish it and failed. It's really boils down to that. It's a sort of OG trolling, with an organic, grass-roots, out-of-the-ether kind of thing. I doubt there is a set origin, it's a cumulative thing out of a throw-everything-and-see-what-sticks. Yes, White Eyes ("her") evolved into Herobrine ("him") and one poster at the time was annoyed it wasn't still a "her" as it was meant to be a "her" and that was "more creepy" but you see these stories evolve on their own. Nobody owns them. That's as much as I remember. It wasn't who said it, it was what was said. Different times. Old, even archaic, Internet culture.

    • Think of it as everyone throwing a seed at a brick wall for fun. Some people are lucky, unknown at the time, and their seeds stick in the cracks. Those seeds grow. Some try to root out the plant others protect and nourish it. The preferred seed it the one whose nourished more than attacked. That's the one lucky seed that became "White Eyes" / "Herobrine". Some of the others were never going to take off. Not before, not during, not after. They didn't "feel right". Some were outright rubbish. Some were good but the wrong time, etc. etc.

This video was I expected if someone to found the answer about Herobrine. You could say I'm just close to @TheMisterEpic's research, if I've put more effort into it. But, the research I've done when I'm kid, and the research started around 2014, and now I'm grown.

  • As much as people will say Herobrine doesn't exist I still have a very vivid memory of 1 time on a Halloween around 2011-2018 whereby there was an update in which in the patch notes it said on the last dash point, - Removed Herobrine. Later that same day, I was in a cave and Herobrine punched me over the edge to my death. That was the last time I saw him.

    @rollerskdude@rollerskdude5 ай бұрын
  • So we mixed it up all along, Herobrine was supposed to have dead white eyes, eyes with no pupils, but eventually the many believed that "him" had glowing white eyes, this is the reason! Also rumors Herobrine was a miner from a cave never to be found again makes sense! There were so many info that people were mixing things up.

  • i absolutely LOVE the herobrine legend. even just typing his name out just now, and watching this video, is giving me goosebumps, not that i'm scared now, but the feeling of ABSOLUTE TERROR i felt as a 10 yearold playing minecraft still resonates in me. having just heard of "herobrine" and being constantly paranoid of seeing him in my games.. it was a level of scared i don't think i"ve ever reached since. back then i alt+f4'd several minecraft sessions purely out of fear because i was getting paranoid that i'd run into him. it feels amazing to still get that creepy, itching feeling inside just thinking of herobrine. thank you for making this video and rekindling that feeling inside me :)

  • to this day, i actually think they should have actually added herobrine to the game as a super rare mob that could spawn at any time and do the things in the legends. the "removed herobrine" thing is cute, and even was included on the 360 version of the game, but i feel like it was a missed opportunity.

    @RaptorNX01@RaptorNX016 ай бұрын
    • The reason he wasn't added is likely because coding something like that would be insane. Having something specifically remove torches and stand in caves just far enough away that you can't reach it, and only appear in darkened caves when you are looking down them, and only at specific times. Seems like a lot of work for something that many players would probably find horrifying and would quit the game over.

      @thelegacyofgaming2928@thelegacyofgaming29283 ай бұрын
    • i see your point, but i think the fact that he’s not actually a part of the game makes him wayyy scarier. humans fear the unknown way more than something scary that we do know. it’s scientifically proven, probably an old survival instinct. that’s why horror movie creators won’t show the monster until usually the very end of the movie - you get the point. i think herobrine’s creepypasta/myth element makes him scarier. he’s not *supposed* to be in the game. he’s an intruder, and that makes players feel unsafe.

  • This brings back so much memories and nostalgia. I remember having sightings of this phenomena back in the early days as well on my single player world. After that i was on a full blown research and paranoia of seeing something unsettling again amids the vast loneliness of early minecraft versions. None of my friends however never got to encounter it themselves. Its really interesting how herobrine became i think the best and greatest minecraft myth, people tried so hard to get him to spawn naturally that it was considered just as a myth as it was impossible. But i had my own experience i believe was seeing a steve skin with white eyes, that cemented his existence in my heart from early days. Thank you for this well-done video. I believe it may have been a bug, but kind of a bug that wasnt truly found out yet.
