My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle.
We film and edit everything ourselves.
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.

    • I have visited England once for business, stayed over 2 weeks, experienced more than I would normally, but it still calls for me to return. My hope is that my dream will come true someday soon. I can’t imagine being landlocked in another country than the one I’m originally from during these crazy times.

With you BEAUTIFUL photography, shots from the drone, I can be there too. I can smell the mossy moisture in the air, the sweetness of the fields, the glory of the Lake District because you took me along with you. You can never realize what this means to me. Thank You.

    • They call such items touch stones. My work took me the world over, I lived out of a suitcase for months at a time. It was those special, small, personal items that kept me company on a long stay in a hotel. A Lalique tumbler for whiskey, small, framed photographs, or a small portrait of someone special found their way into my bags. I can totally see traveling with one's own special tea, and tea cup from home, maybe a gift from some remembrance. And, it was not uncommon for me to buy flower arrangements for the hotel room, something alive, and beautiful added to share the space with me.

  • My mother love gardening and growing plants. She would often steal a cutting or seeds from neighbors (honesty) and would say it will grow better if stolen. I never knew where she got that from until today. She left us this past March at 88. Thank you Michael for making my day.

    • A few years ago in my street we had more than someone taking cuttings, started with vintage cast iron planters, the police were called but 2 nights later the owner woke to find a sea of plastic take-away forks neatly placed in rows across her entire lawn! Looking like a cemetery, the police had never seen the like! They then progressed to the next house and took a full bed of newly planted annuals - twice. They came back again for another go but only managed some very large cuttings - all in the dead of night - as this time I saw them, one at the same house and another guy in a garden across the road to where I was with my dog...outside for a pit stop at 2.45am...he was trying to remove a tree! They knew I saw them, so they picked a house 2 streets away as their next target, wrong move as it was the home of an ex policeman! Don't know what happen but they never came back. That was theft but a small cutting is nothing... but always better to ask as you may get many cuttings.

  • My MOTHER'S FAMILY, THE Threlkeld family, some of them escaping Cromwell, left the Lake District, in 1680. You'll note there is a village called Threlkeld, below Blencathra, a mountain chain. That name, Blencathra means "seat of Arthur". Some of the family settled in new England, Virginia, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Argentina. They were members of Royalists, so they had to watch for Roundheads bounty hunters. In Virginia, they moved into hinterland (now, Kentucky), more or less, to hide. Just some history....

  • A lovely video, you may be interested to know she also had a holiday home in Scotland. I have visited there many times. The family had a holiday home in Dalguise, Her time spent there influenced her development as an artist and scientist. It was also whilst in Scotland that Beatrix wrote a 'picture letter' which provided the basis for her first book 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit'. Similarly, a later book 'The Tale of Jeremy Fisher' also started life as a picture letter with characters clearly based on her study and exploration on the banks of the River Tay. 'The tale of Mrs Tiggy Winkle' was published in 1905 and is almost certainly based on the Potters' old washer woman at Dalguise, Kitty MacDonald. There’s a little garden there and an exhibition in Birnham, Perthshire to commemorate her. P.S. that looks like a baby robin. 😊

It mentions your comment about Mrs Tiggy Winkle and also the inspiration for Mr McGregor who may be based on another local character. Michael replied that he would watch the video.

  • I believe the wheel barrow in the garden was from The Tale of Samuel Whiskers, the dog had the wheel barrow brought to Tabitha Cat to rescue her kitten Tom from the rats Samuel and Abigail Whiskers. Abigail stole the wheel barrow to escape the perimeter to a nearby barn to relocate and needed something to carry their luggage.... I might have watched the cartoon recently, plus it was one of my favorites of Potter's stories.

I am 47 years old and when I was pregnant with my son over 21 years ago, I decorated his nursery with Peter Rabbit and all things beatrix potter. I loved his nursery! I kept everything, except for the crib bedding. I wish I still had it, lol. I still collect it all. It's so whimsy and magical to me! I am so excited with you doing your cottage, Michael! As you panned the green fields, overhead shot of Beatrix Potter's cottage, the flower beds but mostly the beauty of the skies and clouds and rolling hills of England, I felt my blood pressure relax, the stress leave my body and suddenly I was transported back 18 years to the Moors of Kent, standing on one of the tors only hearing the bleating of the lambs, the calls of the eagles flying above and the wind's song. Feeling a bit blue today in lockdown New England, so it was lovely just to see English scenery; how I'm longing to get back. I joked with some others on Stephanie's blog the other day that we should form a collective to buy up and people some lovely little farms and village homes in close proximity in France. I dreamt of it in your last video when you showed the lovely farm next to your family's chateau for sale, something like that would just suit me. The books certainly have a bit of wear and tear on the jackets and old string binding from before I got them, but luckily no stains or watermarks etc. I loved reading all of them when I was little, I used to carry a Benjamin Bunny plush with me everywhere for about the first 8 years of my life I wouldn't put it down haha. • Michael, You are an old soul. They broke the mold with you. I love how you see such beauty in things that other people might just walk past. The cinematography and music are perfect. I love your channel. Beatrix Potter is one of my favorite illustrators as well. What a delight "getting to visit" her home. I'm about 45 minutes from Edgar Allan Poe's house. What a contrast! (I admit that I've been there about 15 times. )

  • Thank you for this beautiful visual essay on Beatrix Potter's home. Wonderful to see how such a humble home can become the backdrop of books that have touched millions of children's lives.I believe it shows how taking the time to be with nature is the goal. I have the editions given to my mother in the early thirties those given to me in the late fifties and the editions I bought for my children, some of which I am giving to my new granddaughter. Greatful that you had this opportunity to touch base with the beauty of Helen's cottage aesthete. Looking forward to how you translate this into your own gardeners cottage. Though I love the chateau grandeur, the cottage style is a lovely palate cleanser, more relaxed and full of simple joys. Thank you! 🐿️🦔🐇🐓🦆

  • Lovely video Michael you showed our landscape beautifully! I’m a huge fan of Beatrix Potter too, would love to hear you talk about her wider achievements in the next video! Not many people realise she was one of the most significant conservationists of our time and she was instrumental in the founding of the National Trust. She actively used her money to buy up land in order to stop it being developed on. She donated it all to the National Trust when she died on the condition that the landscape was preserved. She was also an expert mycologist and natural scientist as well as being an author and artist. What a woman I just have so much respect and admiration for what she achieved! 👏🏻
