This week sees the continuation of my trip to Chateau de la Lande the home of the Chateau Diaries.
Stephanie and I discover the chateau's Medieval defences, we stop an intruder and I set up for an epic school disco party in the Grande Salon.
Help me to keep making videos and restoring this Chateau by visiting my official PATREON page.

My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle.
We film and edit everything ourselves.
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.

  • It makes my heart happy to see Stephanie and Michael together. They're so comfortable in each other's company, almost like twin souls. Not in a romantic sense exactly, it's hard to put into words, but I love it. In fact, I love everything about Chateau De la Lande, the lovely people who live there, as well as the friends and volunteers who pop in and out. Kudos to Stephanie who is at the heart of this magic!

Michael has a way of helping Stephanie when down and too much work and just need a little extra fun in between. He knows how to bring her right back up. Think she does the same for him! He is so talented and knows how to do makeup and hair and so much more, and to really put on a grand party, I certainly do agree, They both seem so relaxed with each other being around. Like a burden has been lifted because they know the other one will know just what to do. We here on You Tube can observe and see so much. Think they are Twin Souls perhaps?

  • Rewatching these older videos, from the past. It’s Easter 2024 now, so not really that long ago but it’s amazing to see how the energy has changed from then until now. Everyone has moved on in their own paths have taken them away. Even the magic duo of Michael and Stephanie hasn’t been for a couple of years. Steph had to drive off site for Wi-Fi to download her video for us. 😂 I myself as a fan had life changing experiences in the past couple years and lost track became the hospital I was in had terrible Wi-Fi, to come back to huge changes. Stephane is engaged to Philip and something bad has happened to Michael couple years back and it’s all so vague as to what happened. He hasn’t post anything for nine months. This shiny duo of what seemed to be forever friends, Stephane and Michael haven’t been in each other’s company in a couple years. 😢so it’s wonderful to pop back in time to watch videos from happy times.😊 I truly hope Michael finds his way back to us in any capacity he may choose and I’ve binge watched Stephane so I’m caught up with her. 😊

I know others have said this before and probably way more eloquently. But since the pandemic started; all the many chateau channels have been a wonderful break from the uncertainty and worries of life. I can sit back sharing in the joys of your lives without the worry of Contagions, Masks, Sanitizers, or social distancing. It truly is a wondrous gift you are sharing with the world; letting us into your world so we can remember we are all part of a bigger community. And more importantly that we all matter and there are still good people in the world. For this, thank you truly from the bottom of all our hearts. And may whatever higher power you subscribe to bless you for making us all a wee bit happier each time we view your artistry.

  • The roofs you have are exceptionally fine and you could learn much more about the structural history of the chateau if you had the timbers scientifically dated (assuming they are oak, which gives the most accurate results). The technique is called dendrochronology, and it can often provide a date of the precise year in which a tree was felled - sometimes even the season also. Although parts of the chateau are undoubtedly 16th century, the machicolations and the high roof behind could be 15th century. Triple-moulded corbels of the kind you have are found in the Channel Islands castles (eg Castle Cornet, Guernsey & Mont Orgueil Castle, Jersey), where they are certainly pre-16th century. The principal function of the inner timber wall in the attic was to carry the entire weight of the roof, and transmit the load (several hundred tons) down to the solid masonry below. The corbels supporting the machicolations could not support such a load - they are cantilivered out from the main wall structure. Incidentally, the often-stated notion that old roofs were made by shipwrights is very rarely true. Nearly everywhere one goes, guides tell you that roofs and floors have been made from 'ships timbers'. The techniques of ship construction and architectural construction are utterly different, and where the occasional piece of timber from a shipyard has been used it is easy to spot (usually in bodged repairs to timber buildings near the coast). The programme was most interesting: you and Michael do a very good joint vlog. I would like to see a lot more of the roofs, and floor structures, but please get some scientific dates for them, which will add considerably to your knowledge of the development of the chateau and enhance your records.

  • This was a fun video. It reminded me of when I was in the Air Force and lived in Ankara, Turkey back in 1995-96. I would go downtown on the weekends to a disco called Dipsomania (which means alcoholism). It was in the basement of an old hotel and was reportedly run by the Turkish mob - but it was the best party in town. People would just run out onto the dance floor and start grooving with whoever was around. They only sold Efes and Tuborg beer, but I was usually sloshed before I got there anyway. I loved how friendly all the British and German expats were to me. It was awesome - and Turkey won the World Cup that year. One evening after a few hours at the disco, a friend and I decided to try our luck at the Dedeman Hotel Casino. We played Carribean Poker, and I won a small fortune. It was fantastic fun.

  • So cool seeing the defenses. All that’s missing is a giant catapult to hurl cows at the enemy. Benjamin really comes alive on the dance floor. He seems so shy normally.
