What Happened To This West Coast Lyrical Genius! RAS KASS Stunted Growth Music
Ras kass is a rapper, songwriter and record producer from Carson California, Watts to be exact, that grew up a hip hop fan, around the gang banging in his neighborhood, but never taking part in it, although his rap sheet suggest he was more than a trouble maker. In 94 he released Remain Anonymous, a promotional single that caught the eye of the source magazine, that feature him in the hip hop quotable section and led to a deal with Priority Records. His Ethiopian stage name derives from emperor Yohannes the IV and drew inspiration not just from West Coast artist, but heavily influenced and intrigued by east coast artist like Nas, Jay-z Ice Cube, KRS One, Rakim, RZA and the list goes on. With his lyrical ability, he was embraced by the east coast all the same, and to this day his word play from over 20 years ago still have the same razor sharp impact it had back then on new listeners. As a lyricist Ras Kass was on a different level with his earlier work. He could've had one of the best careers for a lyricist, he just needed a little more maturity and being ready when that one opportunity came about. Still Dope, forgotten artist.
Tha Alkaholiks were apart of this wave #Wrstcoast #StuntedGrowth
Nature of threat is hard af never heard it until my 40 recently history lesson like never before
Miami Life is still my favorite track by Ras.
Soul on Ice remix
West Coast Mentality.
Ras Kass is the best lyrical rapper out the West, period
I mess with Xzibit to
One thing is certain, Rass raised a set of twins that's one half of the group 'Coast Contra' and they are keeping his legacy alive.
I was waiting for him to mention that and maybe show a little snippet of them. If no one has ever heard of them, google them I promise you won’t be disappointed if your a hip hop head
I thought Teedra raised them after she split with Ras.
Yes Ras kass isa dope lyrical MC. That soul on Ice album is a hip hop classic in my opinion. The 2nd album was 🔥🔥🔥🔥. He was not a company man and miss oppuntities but still one of my favs from back then
So underrated Kass is fire
FACTS!
🔝 5 in my 📓
@@alfredjones9548same💯
Rass kass pave the way for kendrick lamar big push. Underground legend from thecwest coast one of the greatest a time great emcees of all times.
He was a raw ass West coast rapper! Those Wake Up Show freestyles he did back in the day was LETHAL! Thank you Stunted Growth Music for this feature! Thanks again for my request for this dope, underrated, raw, lyrical MC!
Walk these streets with more heat than Alonzo Mourning - Ras Kass
As dope as Rass is being super lyrical w/ conceptual songs was never going to take him to the top he made a name for himself as an Emcee and he never tried to change up that's why he is still highly regarded as an West Coast legend
The nature of the threat song was a real 💭 provoking song about religion and how he views it. After he was released from prison he put out albums "Institutionalized" pts one and 2. Both were pretty good 👍! He has a few mixtapes as well. The last album I have of his is "A.D.I.D.A.S(All, day, I, dream, about, spittin')". But "Soul on 🍦 (96)" is a CLASSIC album! Shout to homie that requested this LEGEND, SALUTE!! Ras Kass is one of the 🐐 s!!
He was my 2nd favorite lyricist in the 90's. 2nd to only Canibus. What impressed me about Ras Kass though was more his content/subject matter than lyricism. He always had something interesting to rap about.
Rass was lyrically crazy. Wasn't he in Four Horseman?
Yes, with Killah Priest, Kurupt, Cannibus and Ras.
Yup
Yup yup...2nd to only Kurupts lyrics...
@@xtabolx2425bar for bar ras rap better
@@polite80sbaby33 I say kurupt because he switched up styles to abstract from gangsta..
He had BARS! And you' stunted growth' I appreciate for putting the spotlight on artists from my' time.. Good Work' 💯
He had quotables for days. One of my favorites was "Make radio sh-t/Heads criticize it/Underground classic/Nobody buys it/So now rap is f---ed/And everything blowing up sounds redundant."
Great episode but a few stunts missed. 1. Dr Dre actually appeared on the Rassassination album on the first single. Wasn't promoted as nowhere near as well as it should have been. 2. Before Goldyn Child was shelves, his Van Gogh album was shelved. 3. Alchemist selling the beat for his single twice and it became "We Gon Make It$ by jadakiss
💯
Damn autocorrect got my Grammer looking crazy
Ras used that Alchemist beat for Home Sweet Home.
@@saj8 alchemist sold the best twice. Ras was ready to release it as his single then found out Jada had the same beat
Bro been a beast. I brought soul on ice the first day it came out back in 96.
Rass was ALWAYS dope. What a Shame he never blew
Damn. That jay z story is like a movie.
Yeah soul on ice was ahead of it's time. He's one of them that was just ahead of the game to me
I remember an interview where Ras said he had the opportunity to sign with Def Jam but didn't due to him thinking he was keeping real with the West by signing to priority. He runs into Russell Simmons and Russell told him he should've come to Def Jam he could've at least got him a gold album.
PLEASE do a video on the rapper Nine! Also, my first time hearing Ras Kass was on the track Miami Life from The Substitute soundtrack.
2:59 this how I felt the first I heard Big L …. Only to feel soooooooo sad after realizing he was gone for at least 10 years already!
Bro, you bringing more light to some 🔥 azz emcees, focusing on barz, we need a stunted growth on Chino XL asap!!!
I never heard of Rass Kass until today. I am going to go listen RN
Definitely been Rocking with Ras Kass since way back when he first stepped up on the seen back in 95 ,96 💯💯💯
Not forgotten, saw him live in 2019 in the Netherlands with X to Z , James Savage and Demrick. It was 🔥🔥🔥
About time you did Ras! Been asking you for months for this. Salute
YES!! Thank u for this
Miami life still🔥💯💪🏾‼️
His sons are next up. Extremely talented.
The way Dre did him after Ghetto Fabulous was cold🥶
I Still Rock his album soul on Ice to this day. My boy was speaking mad truth
Listened to it yesterday twice. Dude is in my top 10 for that album alone.
I was waiting for this one
You run a hip hop channel but had never heard of Ras Kass, that's wild.
Thank you.
Nature Of The Threat is my favorite Ras Kass joint
I met ras kass not just a dope mc but a dope person
I remember first hearing about him on Chino XL's debut album.
I remember the promo video for his 1st album where he rapped acapella and the one line that stood out was "I'm thuggish-ruggish to the bone/And I'ma diss everybody."
Here To Save You All had some bangers on it
@@mackvelly8899 yes it did
@@mackvelly8899💯
This is good. Love Ras. Where's the stunted for Camp Lo?
Ras Kass is very underrated and speaking of west coast, how about doing Whoridas
Ras is a stellar wordsmith. His beat selection has been terrible for the majority of his career. His collabo album 'Blasphemy' with Apollo Brown is super dope though.
That is a very hot album.
The song Miami Life was my introduction to Ras Kass & i've been a fan of his every since. Please do the following artists: Richie Rich, Jayo Felony, Warren G, Tha Luniz & Tha Alkoholics.
Rap careers are like running back careers. Here today gone tomorrow.
You should definitely do a "Stunted Growth" vid, on 40glocc, that'd be interesting
First heard Kass on the Street Fighter soundtrack along with Ahmad & Saafir "Comwiditt".
Damn Ras!
Soul On Ice album top 10
Ras never told me that he was going to get with Jay when I u=interviewed him anyway Ras Kass has nothing to prove he still got his core fan base that is what all an artist need
I first heard him through Revenge of the Spit, then went back to Soul On Ice.
I was wondering when you would do a video on him
Rass is respected by the goat's bc he is the a GOAT. C-ARSON
He is a beast
He didnt sell. Because he was marketed as this Anti-Gangsta West Coast rapper with East Coast skills who was the opposite of the status quo of West Coast rap. West Coast fans didnt support him. Because he didnt look or sound like us. East Coast fans didnt support him. Because they didnt f&&& with the West. That bs flopped. Then he tried to come back with Dre and Mack 10 on the song with Ice T in the video on his lead first single off his 2nd album. I guess he had them on the first single to capitalize off that West Coast gangsta rap s&^^. But Pac was dead for 2 years. West Coast gangsta rap was dead. Dre denounced Gangsta rap two years before the release of the song. Ice T was irrelevant af. It was a good song. But two years too late. Plus it went against Ras Kass whole sound and image. Even with Aftermath Entertainment producer, Stu, producing the majority of the 2nd Rass album. No one cared. That bs went wood. He f&&& up his own career for being inconsistent and aliening the West Coast from the jump.
This is nonsense! He was never marketed as a non-west coast artist, especially with his crew being called “Western Hemisphere” and his many rhymes about being from “C-arson.” All the artists from the Good Life, Pharcyde, Hiero, The Likwit Crew, Anotha Level, Freestyle Fellowship, etc. is an indictment of the west coast fanbase, not these artists. Smh!
Well "Rass Kass" still recording....his debut album "Soul On Ice" was a certified classic banger. Songs like."Miami Life fea.Coolio" is a romantic classical harp sample over a lofi - Ish vibe...Next come "Nature Of The Threat". His more conscious storytelling about the evil story of How America became America...Then his more braggadocios songs like "Soul On Ice", "Anything Goes", "Come Wid It fea Saafir & Ahmad". Then his second album hit..."Rassasination". That album is his more mature album. "Ghetto Fabulous" a hypnotic Dr Dre produced track guarantee to get any head to bop at it. Fast forward...he did joints with the "RZA". He colab with "Apollo Brown" whole album together....He was featured along with Canibus on a "Health Skeltah" joint for the rhyme or reason soundtrack....I mean "Rass" one of the best not just for West Coast but Hip Hop period ! You got to give it up ! 🎤🎧🎤🎧🎤🎧🎤🎧
You and I think alike 👍😉! I was going to say the same exact thing! An album that is pretty good imo is "A.D.I.D.A.S(All, day, I, dream, about, spittin')" which came out on 2010.
@@anthonymcmillan8273 My sentiments exactly.....! You brought up some great new Rass Kass albums. He never seems to disappoints....yes...you & I we say in the East Coast. We "A-alikes" 2 minds think alike .....
Stu-B-Doo produced "Ghetto Fabulous" fam.
@@ThaMizphit74 Yeah Dr Dre did the video mix version.....
Heyy, caan you please do The Beatnuts next?? Plzzz
NATURE OF THE THREAT IS IN MY TOP 10 GREATEST RAP SONGS OF ALL TIME

Hey stunted growth! Will you do a "Tyga" video next?
In 2008 I use to write this guy in jail and he was really dope to talk to....I kept all of his letter responses to me.

Met him out here in Dallas...hella cool OG. Taking in at a live band spot with my homie. F****** with people in the club, I talk to these chics , trying to set something up... Get back to my brother... Explaining to him about the two chicks... He inquires "where", and my response was "next to this Rass Kass looking mf." and lo behold who it was.😂😂😂😂 Hella down to earth....and still a goat. Him and my homey chopped hip hop the rest of that evening. 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐
Definitely got to do Bankroll Freddie
Do the Chicago group "Do Or Die" next.
That was my suggestion
C Arson!! Been there lived in LA 6 months!!
When u gonna do (nonchalant) 5 o’clock in da morning where u gonna be✌🏾
Why didn't you bring up his song Ghetto Fabulous with Dr. Dre and Mack 10?
Son is nice I met him downtown bk werid cause he from the west coast
Don’t feel too bad about not being up on Ras, my brother had his ‘Soul On Ice’ and ‘Rassassination’ albums in the 90s and he still didn’t make me want to listen(I did like Ghetto Fabulous track ft. Mack 10 and Dr. Dre though)until I heard him over an Alchemist track that they had a dispute over. I feel that LOUD records would have been a better fit for him instead of Priority records especially since their focus was more on Cube and letting No Limit sneak in(as to why Jay-Z would not have lasted with them with RD album).
Great value Nas
Don’t do that…
“Nature of the threat” is mandatory
Do a Stunt Growth video on Chinx
Fun fact: Some people are happy with where they are and not what you expect from them
Do a video on new york emcee named Nine 9mm
His sons are just dope ras and Taj Austin
The whole group coast contra
Do ray cash
Can you do Half a mil ? Frm the Firm team they were jerkin son, Son was madd Hott and he was God body and stayed dropping jewels 💎
Do Special Ed or Little Shawn
Lowkey I didn't even know he was from the West Coast. Never looked into him that much back then. He was nice though.
Stop sleeping ras Kass is mad nice
Do a video on Brotha Lynch Hung Sacramento legend
Can we get K-Camp please?!
one reason I quit rapping, too many people and too many flows sound the same. Soul on ice is still my shit.
I ride with Ras(his sons are DOPE too)Prince Kass....Golden State Worriors Van Ghoh Soul on Ice DOPE catalog Nature of the threat is ILL and true😂😂😂
Devin the Dude should be next.
This might be the most important one of these you ever did...
Ras is dope bc he's lyrical but he had asshole humor that kept him grounded for me. Soul on Ice is incredible, and he's dropped some nice late career albums.
I got heads dividing faster than nerds at a calculus convention
"I got niccas looking for Webster's like George Popadopolous..." 😜
Reality bites like bad blow jobs/The b---- is a lesbian/How she married to the mob?
Say it with me Ra-sass-a-nation. Good video though
No mention of coast contra, huh?
How do you do somethin' on Ras Kass and not mention The Four Horsemen?
If/Then was the freestyle he was rapping in the beginning.
