  • Oh, thank god this is not just a problem that I have. Every time when I try to draw or paint something I hear voices in my head that keep insulting my drawing and painting skills. The voices in my head have taken my narcissistic big brother's voice, and he used to insult me from almost everything I did when we were younger, especially my drawings and paintings. These days it's like there would be a tiny version of him living inside my head complaining and insulting me from all the art I try to create. "The voices" don't answer back to me nor do objects talk to me, so I'm not crazy... but I do watch anime so I might be little.

    • Well, whether you are crazy or not is between you and your doctor, ha ha! I don't mean I literally hear voices but I do feel the pull of resistance, like some part of my brain is actively trying to trip me up. Learning to ignore that is part of becoming a pro, I think.

  • HOLY sh*t! That is actually very true! Whenever I dabble in a long-term drawing protect I always go over the littlest of details and criticize and second-guess myself! Its nice to know that this is a normal process and it happens to everyone, it shows me that even if authors and artists have been immortalized through the ages, they have gone through the exact same thing!

    • Second-guessing yourself is second nature to creatives. Thanks for sharing!

  • It's so difficult to ignore that negative voice. At times, it can even be paralyzing and lead me to procrastination.

    • Very true.

  • I have that negative voice like that. Sometimes it turns the other way though.... "Like you've ever given a shit what anyone thinks anyway! Do it just to piss 'them' off!" --- That's helpful when it says that.

  • Hi. It's nice to know that this is a thing. I was thinking that I was unique by having this inner argument every day. And.. I was winning maybe 50% of the time. Thanks for making me laugh.

  • Thank you for this video, your advice has been priceless for getting back up to a standard I'm happy with. Do you ever have your characters talk to you?

    • The voices I talk about in this vid is not literal, more like the negative thought and self-criticism most of us have to deal with on a daily basis. When I'm writing I do run through dialogue in my head and let the characters talk to me.

  • Palle, it's so good to see you in another video! Your past video about how to convert a movie script into a comic book was extremely helpful to me! (kzhead.info/sun/oZR7oqeuaX2wZYk/bejne.html) Thank you so much! In fact, I was inspired by you to start my own KZhead channel. By the way, I too read The War of Art not too long ago, so good job borrowing its lessons to create a comic book related video! Please keep the new videos coming!
