  • I remember being young & amazed at how strong my dad was; how big his hands were compared to mine. It's only as a man grows older that he begins to see his father - not as a superhero - but as a vulnerable human doing his best & who they'll outlive. So the idea of making the father the _literal_ strongest man on Earth who will still be with you in "500 years" is a *_deep_* theme for young men. A titan who will never pass the mantle & will always overshadow denies the final rite of passage of growing up as a man.

Everyone ages, and in modern times there comes a point where the father retires and passes the 'family business' to the son. But when your father WILL NEVER AGE, will always be there, will always be 'more' than you, that has an effect on your perception of them. Think of what Nolan said to Mark in the first episode: when you're young/a teenager, you think your invincible and that has consequences when your perception doesn't match reality. But if you actually were invincible, if you didn't need to worry about 'biting off more than you can chew', the usual life-lesson of learning your limits doesn't really apply.

  • So it might not be obvious but when Omniman calls Debbie a pet he’s not calling her a literal possession, he’s saying she’s a fleeting pleasure in his lifespan. Its like when you get a dog or a mouse, or just any tiny creature you know as long as nothing extraordinary happens, you WILL outlive it. I think it’s obvious that he loves her even more than he believes he does. He’s so indoctrinated that its hard for him to even recognize his emotions. Despite being he antagonist for season 1 they make him extremely grey, a thing ive noticed is alot of villains we watch that don’t do things personally or don’t care about morality aren’t as hated as ones who do. Like people don’t hate the Joker since he literally isn’r even trying to be good. Omniman on the other hand is extremely malicious and violent and yet explaining his thought process and how he views humans puts you in his mindset and like it or not you empathize. The fact he had a kid, had a wife, is proof there is more to him, and Im interested to see where the show takes it.

  • just something to add add from the comics that didnt make its way into the series. Its explained that the reason Nolan acted when he did was because mark developed powers. Despite what it looks like he does love Mark and Debbie, but he's so brainwashed by the viltrum empire that he has to be loyal to them. The original plan was for Nolan to wait until Debbie and Mark died of natural causes, and then start initiating his plan, but because mark develops powers, and viltrumites get stronger the older they grow and the more they times they nearly die. Nolan knows if he waits then mark will be able to stop him one day, and Nolan has already aged significantly so he cant just outlast mark. I think this advanced age also plays into how Nolan can just brush off death, when youve been a warrior for over a thousand years i think life would stop meaning as much to you, especially when its a shorter lived species like humans.

    @declancampbell1277@declancampbell12775 ай бұрын
    • Slight correction: the _original_ original plan was for Nolan to conquer Earth; then he met Debbie and decided to have some fun, a short vacation, and then go on with the plan; then he got her pregnant, so the plan changed to include the kid growing up and helping him; then Mark didn't get powers and after some frustration (see the Atom Eve special's end credits scene) the plan became to stay on vacation until Debbie and Mark died, and _then_ conquer Earth; then Mark _did_ get powers, and everything was ruined, because by now Nolan had gone fully native and he _didn't_ want to have to kill his friends, even if his duty as a Viltrumite meant he had to.

Not defending him or anything, but he probably doesn't think of himself as evil, just a part of something so much more advanced and powerful that the only logical choice is to submit. • Yeah, a lot of people immediately take his comment about Debbie being like a pet to him as this callous, cruel thing to say, that it proves he never cared and only ever pretended to; because our own preconcieved notions about what we call pets and how we view ourselves compared to other species on earth are hard to shake. For instance, evidently being the most intelligent species on the planet, we decided to use intellect/the capacity for complex mental processes as the main trait to determine things like worth, how many rights and protections they deserve, etc. (Hence why a dog has more legal protection than an amoeba). However, if we view things from the POV of a Viltrumite, then that classification doesn't really work anymore. They've been to multiple planets inhabited by different forms of intelligent life, so they cannot use intellect as a metric. So what do they do? Simple: they use physical strength. They're quite literally a might-makes-right-society. That's why Nolan calling Debbie his pet isn't demeaning in the way we think, it's just him acknowledging that he's going to outlive and mourn her for a long time. So really, it's quite a tragic comment for him. Of course, you can still read it the human way and that still works (god knows Debbie does), but understanding how he truly meant it makes that moment just that much more interesting, no?

Every country in the world has people that do very violent things in the name of their country. The author of the comic pointed this out about Nolan and many of the other viltrumites.

  • In all honesty it makes sense from Omnimans point of view, not saying he is right, but imagine this. You are born on a planet thousands of years ago and taught on that planet for thousands of years that might makes right, most species dont live a fraction of your life and when you compare Viltrumite technology and power to any other species Viltrumites always seem to have the best stuff. It would be hard to think yourself superior, and bringing other species to your level as benevolent. Omniman is likely thousands of years old and barely looks 40-50, He has spent 20 years on earth, a speck of time in the long run, like a week/month long trip, its surprising he was affected at all by his time on earth. And as for the pet comment, yes its insulting, but think about a dog or cat you love more than anything, how long they live compared to you, there are people out there that love their pets more than people. It doesn't diminish the love you feel for them, but them passing is something that you have to learn to deal with. Another thing, his comment about needing to know for sure about Mark being a Viltrumite is related to the fact that he was planning on delaying his invasion until after Debbie and Mark were dead from old age, he didnt want Mark to be a Viltrumite. Then think about this, Omniman is not the strongest viltrumite, and as far as Mark knows there is an entire empire of them. Omniman is showing mark what fighting back against just one of them will do. And Omniman likely is the nicest Viltrumite you will ever see. Logically giving in to the Viltrum empire is the smart move and would involve less deaths.

    • Realistically speaking what the Viltrumites do is the same as us bulldozing over Anthills, or putting them into Farms for our amusement. We don't give them Ants a second thought after wiping them out or imprisoning them, because they're simple Animals. So it's kinda ironic to me that People somehow expect a different treatment when we suddenly find ourselves in the Ants position.

      @CedricBassman@CedricBassman5 ай бұрын
    • God I’m sick of seeing this comment. Viltrumites are god damn eugenicist space nazis. These “ants” that they kill are not ants. They are people with thinking conscious minds, just like viltrumites. It’s one group having guns and missiles, and tanks, and the other side is labelled “ants” because they don’t have guns tanks and missiles. Fucking YAWN with this shit.

      @wavehellhole@wavehellhole5 ай бұрын
    • The difference is of course consciousness. No one cares about ants, but when you move up to dogs a lot of people care. See how people react when a puppy gets hurt. Of course that increased care with consciousness is a human thing. No reason to expect that same logic from a different species. @@CedricBassman

      @MarijnvdSterre@MarijnvdSterre5 ай бұрын
    • @@MarijnvdSterre People react different to hurt puppies because they're seen as cute, nothing more. Not because of their consciousness. If that was the Reason, Humans wouldn't treat other Humans like shit for no reason. Hell, there are dozens of other Animals ranking way higher than Dogs when it comes to consciousness, but we as a Species are currently in our best effort to wipe them off the face of the Earth. So your claim to increased care with consciousness is not even a Human trait to begin with.

He will outlive every single human he knows currently(his wife included), cats and dogs typically only live around 12 years, yet we love them all the same. Omni-man's human wife, will live basically a tiny spec of his lifetime. In the grand scheme of things, we would have lived for a much longer time with our pet than he did with his human wife.
