Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania is arguably one of the worst MCU movies to date.
People have complained about how it seemed rushed, how the actors didn't seem like part of the world around them and that how the visual effects in one scene could look absolutely beautiful and then in the next, look like a cheap video game.

And (on the face of it) this seems to be true, but it's not the fault of whom you may have thought.
If you look at MPC's work here, you can see the incredible number of components and the tremendous amount of detail that went into creating it and Pixomondo's work here is just stunning. incredibly beautiful. and complex. But now look at the rebel fight scene, you can see that this guy here. Isn't actually fighting anyone. When Xolum and Veb flee to the sanctuary, their animation looks rough and jerky. Later on, we see Cassie running, and that too looks rough and jerky. And this guy here shoots a rebel, but nothing comes out of his gun. It all just seems sloppy. In fact, the entire scene just seems confusing, rushed, and messy.
And if we look at some anonymous complaints from VFX artists that have been appearing online.
we begin to see why. One artist who was employed by a VFX house who worked on both Quantumania and Wakanda Forever claimed that "In terms of priority, Wakanda Forever was definitely at the top of the list. All the money went to that. All the best resources went to that. It’s understandable given the context - with Chadwick and everything and how well the first film did. But it did diminish the ability to carry Ant-Man all the way through".
And another said: "For Ant-Man, there were a lot of editorial changes happening toward the latter third and fourth of the project that were just too late. There’s a point of no return. Why certain things were changed, why certain notes were nitpicked longer than they should have been; That’s on Marvel. But it definitely did cause a lot of tension, turmoil, and weight on everybody."
Another one of the biggest issues that the audience had was with MODOK, with a lot of people claiming that the effect looked "comically bad" but if you look at the process that Digital Domain went through, and the incredible realism they managed to achieve and then you look at the end result in some of the scenes in the movie.
You begin to notice that MODOK doe actually look very convincing when he's serious or angry but when he smiles, he begins to look comical.
This is not because of a failed visual effect, but because of the way the actor chose to play the part and the way that Marvel decided to portray the character.
And this is the main reason for MODOK's bad reception, MODOK is a character with massive head! had he been played as a serious, angry character it would have been funny to poke fun at him, but there is little or no humor in poking fun at something that, by itself, is already comical.
And lastly, there's the problem of the actors not seeming part of the world around them and this occurs mainly because of two main reasons.
Firstly because during principal photography they didn't really know what the world around them was going to look like because it hadn't been designed yet.
This meant that they couldn't really use LightStage LED screens to cast interactive light onto the actors and had to mainly use bluescreens which cast a blueish hue that has to be corrected.
This led to scenes like the desert scene where the actors have shadows on the left suggesting they have a light source to the right and yet we can see they have two suns that should be lighting them from behind. And then here, there's a distinct difference between background and foreground. And here, this massive batlike creature flying in front of a light source has no effect on how Michelle is lit.
The second reason was that there weren't any convincing interactions between the actors and the things that were going to be CGI.

  • This is actually a pretty well-made and informative analysis of why the VFX looked bad, very nice

  • Many of us won't notice all these but when we actually compare movies like this with other ones, we'll see the difference

  • When you look at movies like Dune pt. 1 and 1917 etc. the difference in CGI fidelity and realism/impact is night and day compared to an MCU or DC movie. I'm glad more and more people are expressing their dissatisfaction with MCU's poor-looking CGI that's plastered in so many shots in the movie.

  • The plot is beyond nonsense. How are they removing the helmets when they previously stated that doing so would be lethal. Then you got the part where they somehow end up in the same place the mother was when they went quantum inside the house. When something is smaller then atoms a single hair would be as big as our solar system if not more relatively. So HOW DO THEY GO TO THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY FROM THE HOUSE WHILE BEING QUANTUM SIZED. Then you got the pathetic effects, nothing seems to have weight yet cassie seems heavy af when she goes "big" towards the end. She is still smaller then a atom, so how does she suddenly become heavy like godzilla? Absolutely pathetic.

    • I mean, the entire "quantum realm" is made-up "science" that has no connection to actual quantum physics. Worrying about the specifics of how it works is a waste of time IMO.

  • MCU jumped teh shark after endgame.

    • Yep. They really should have allowed the fans some breathing room after end game and used that time to develop better scripts and storyboards (not sure if that is the term i am looking for). Everything after endgame feels like they downgraded for quantity over quality, and i am not even a fan of endgame.

  • VFX artists should go on strike untill writers come up with better stories. Vfx in this movie was ok, i didnt even notice anything wrong with it, antman is more of a comedic character so viewers can let it slip also.

  • If you ever feel like you're being too picky, watch this. Dude.. there's a limit to how much you can critique a representation of sci-fi based reality that isn't real. For a movie about a quantum universe and superheros, it was pretty good. They certainly did a whole lot better than I could.

    @lharrison187@lharrison1878 ай бұрын
    • Being picky is a derogatory term for what is constructive criticism, which is a vital component for improvement. These small details are the type of things that people feel but don't really notice until they analyse it or someone points it out. Sonething feels off and tbat can break immersion. It's great that you liked the movie, but that seems to be why you made your argument to begin with. Yours is an emotional argument instead of a logical one... and many people don't like parts of the movie because the vfx felt off for them.

    • Many of us lived through numerous decades of piss-poor movie adaptations of our favourite comic book, cartoon or video game characters & stories. Then, in 2008, Iron Man changed everything. (Xmen 1-2 we’re also good, & so we’re the first two Batmen IMO) but then Disney bought Marvel Studios & the quality of the movies suddenly became inconsistent as the volume increased. It’s not too picky for us to pay attention to & contribute to the care given to these characters & stories. There’s also an underlying theme here about proper treatment & compensation of VFX artists. A company like Disney farms the work out to small studios who are so hungry to work on a big name project, they put their people through the ringer to make impossible deadlines & budgets happen. It’s not too picky for us to care about those creative people & their livelihoods.

These faceless producers hold the potential careers of Director, Actor and Writer in their palms. They know it. THEY ABUSE IT.
