Xcelerator Cable Snap Accident - 9/16/09 - Knott's Berry Farm

On September 15, 2009, a cable used to launch trains snapped during the launch on the Xcelerator roller coaster, sending pieces of debris flying and lacerating the left leg of twelve year old Kyle Wheeler. Both the Kyle and another male rider, who complained of back pain, were sent to the hospital. The man was released, but Kyle Wheeler has undergone multiple surgeries to repair the damaged muscle tissue in his leg. Russel Wheeler, the father of Kyle, was sitting beside Kyle when the cable snapped. The Wheeler family won an undisclosed amount of money in a lawsuit against the park. The ride has since been reopened.
Xcelerator is an Intamin AG Accelerator Coaster, located at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California.

    • When something hits, cuts, slices, smashes you at a high rate of speed you honestly don’t feel any pain for about 20 seconds. Your brain is incapable of perceiving the amount of pain at an instance. Like that’s not how pain works lol. First you’re in shock, you don’t feel anything. Next you realize your situation and you can now begin to feel a tiny bit. At this point though your brain is trying it’s hardest to keep you from feeling pain, so now all your endorphins began to rush. This last for about 20 minutes. Then that’s when the actual pain starts, once that adrenaline wears off you feel it believe me lol. I’ve been through some shit, and have experienced the whole trip several times, it sucks being in that spot.

I didn't feel any pain for a day then I started feeling pain on my kneecap and lower back for a week. 😅 Until today, I get discomfort in both areas, especially on cold days.

  • There was an incident at 6 Flags in California about ten years ago on the Free Fall ride. A cable snapped. The operator was alerted by a warning buzzer but went to get a manager, instead of immediately pushing the Emergency Stop button. When it went into free fall, the free end of the cable wrapped around a young girls lower legs and cut them both clean off below the knees. Unfortunately, many States do not regularly inspect machines nor require the operator to do so. We often assume we are safe with the machines and operators, but there's still a certain amount of risk.

It happened to me when I was a kid. I was going down a mountain coaster at high speed. I lost control and the go cart flipped over, sending me off the track and face first into the dirt. It was a near death experience that they both shared, and lived through it. They could have died. So the worst had not happened. Yet, they lived that day and created one of the most concrete memories that they will share because they lived through that by each other. Yes they suffer still because of it, but they share something that reminds each other of the day they lived together. You have to look for the good, or you'll never see the good. • I’m 100% positive rollercoasters need a type of unlock device that passengers can do themselves - with one caveat: it doesn’t work if just one car presses the “unlock device”. Instead 2 or more cars will need to activate/twist the lever (or whatever the mechanism is) in order for the unlock to be accepted. That way a random a-hole, or curious fool, can’t inadvertently kill everyone. Also the unlocking mechanism wouldn’t release the tension on all the restraints. It would just allow individuals the ability to unclasp their belts or restraint on their own.

    • What the hell would that ridiculous suggestion achieve?

      @TheBroz@TheBroz9 ай бұрын
    • @@TheBroz it allows people the autonomy to escape a ride once it’s become stuck. There’s hundreds of examples of people being stuck on rides that stop (for one reason or another), where the occupants have to wait minutes or hours to get rescued. I’m claustrophobic, so it would be excruciating.

  • So glad everyone’s okay! Hope the kid heals up physically and this doesn’t leave him or dad with any long term trauma. That must feel awful to not help your kid right away and to both be locked in for a short time. It must be so scary/confusing to be shook up and then your hurt and in pain at a place you should be having fun and safe at! 😭💕 so glad both and everyone else is okay!

  • It wouldn't have helped in this case, but you should carry 2 things in your car's glove box & on your person if possible: -a North American Rescue tourniquet (there are FAKES EVERYWHERE buy from N.A.R. ONLY) -Quick Clot gauze bandages (These will still arterial bleeding with the medicine inside them.) Having those 2 things saves more lives than ANYTHING else would. Keep a set in your vehicle & on you if you can carry them. They make a belt carrier for the TQ. I met a FEMA surgeon once & he told me 0% of people should EVER die from losing a limb of you have a proper TQ on that limb. 0%.
