I bought a 1987 Turbo II when I was 17 years old (around 1999). It was in amazing condition, had like 45,000 miles and basically looked new. I had for about 8 years. I only modified the intake and exhaust. I kept the engine bay so clean that my neighbor demanded I enter it in the car show (I didn't). I feel now that I didn't really deserve such a nice, fun, and quick car when that young, but I had a blast with it and didn't crash or anything.

Here lies the last online relic of the once-glorious series Up To Speed. Once the highlight of many a car fan's week, now just another casualty of 2020. With high hopes of a swift return, all mention of the series vanished like dust in the wind, like so many other things in this cursed, wretched year. Many still hold out hope for its return, but time and again I find myself just unable to do anything but feel sad from the lack of new updates. Personally I'll be withholding my viewership on any of the content made after this date until new episodes make their unveiling, as frankly the best part of the channel, the one that made it what it was, is too harsh a pain to bear the thought of leaving. Here's to hoping 2021 turns brighter by gracing us with new episodes, but until such a time, I'll be here, remembering the good times on each thursday for years on end, years I had hoped would keep coming...

The R stands for RRRRRRRRRR...makes sense
Yah the roatry its funny nice joke XD
As an Rx8 owner I feel like I need to set something straight. The weight distribution of the RX8 is not "messed up". Not only does the RX8 have a 51:49 weight balance, but it has less polar momentum due to the engine being lower and further back than the FD's. Not only that, the chassis is 50% stiffer than the FD's. With a torsional rigidity of 30,000Nm/deg it's as solid as an exotic sports car. And don't even get me started about the suspension bushes. Kind of like it's little brother, the mx5/ miata, the RX8 isn't about blistering acceleration. It's about balance and the driving experience as a whole. And what driving enthusiast doesn't love an engine that can rev to over 9000 rpm. You don't get that kick of turbo torque, but you do get superior throttle response and predictable linear torque. If you guys at Donut Media haven't driven a well sorted RX8, I highly recommend you do before passing judgment.
It's been like 9 weeks since they said they were taking a break. Hopefully Up To Speed comes back soon. I don't want this series to end the same way Science Garage did.
My earliest memory is my dad giving it the beans up a hill and setting off the Rev limit beeper. So intoxicating and I’ll treasure that memory for ever
I thought the RX-8 rear doors were clever. A true “4-door coupe.” The style design itself looked kinda goofy tho
In my opinion, the RX-8 was decent, but it just was not the car to continue the R-7 lineage.
The RX8 could have benefitted being wider and sleeker rather than this stumpy looking thing. But hey, atleast the Gemera now fixed what the RX8 couldn't and that is not requiring to chop the legs of a person above 6ft.
it looked more like a MX5 than an RX7. Honestly I just wished they kept the RX7 design and ditched the power dorito engine. The rx7 FD is fucking beautiful, you could release it today with an updated interior and no one could ever tell it was made in the early 1990s.
Lars as an rx8 owner, I unfortunately have to agree. The 8 it’s a great car, but not the true spiritual successor of the legend that became the rx7.
You CANNOT talk about rotaries, especially 3- and 4-rotor cars, without mentioning Logan and Defined Autoworks. I know he's not making a ton of flashy KZhead videos (even though they DO have a channel, check it out), but he's been ABSOLUTELY crucial to the development of the rotary engine for the past 15 years or so. This dude started out by posting about my dream idea, a naturally-aspirated 3-rotor project and then just rapidly developed a whole series of different modifications that ended up changing the landscape entirely. His car, an FD3S that has been heavily modified, both serves as his test platform and has gone through an insane amount of iterations while developing things that actually ended up on people's cars. He's in a couple of Rob's videos as he has the capability to not only balance but build pretty much whatever rotary engine you need. Dude is seriously amazing, he built an entire business around his desire to do R&D on the rotary. He deserves a shout-out.
I don't think there's a car I want more than a FD. Been obsessed with them since booting up Gran Turismo for the first time in 97-98. One day, one day.
10:05 The NA FC was a 13B, not a 12A. The Turbo II engine was a 13B-T Edit: (some fact checking from some friends) - these further engines also used iron seals, not graphite - the SA was the first RX7 model, not the FB - the RX8 has 50:50 weight distribution, it’s just heavier than the FD - the FB GSL-SE trim came with rear disc brakes and a 13B hope that helps ;)

A few points that were missed: the 1978-1980 RX-7’s were actually a SA chassis, not a FB. The 1984 and 1985 FB’s had a trim called the GSL-SE which used a fuel injected 13b engine, not the standard carbureted 12a. The GSL and GSL-SE also had rear disc brakes from factory. The FC RX-7 never came with a 12a motor, it came with a N/A 13b and a turbo 13b

I had both an FB and an FD. I bought the FB new in '84 and drove it 215k miles before trading it in on the used/abused FD. The two had completely different temperament. The FB was a lot of fun to thrash around at lower speeds, while the FD was a precision weapon that didn't suffer foolish behavior. Compared with the FD, the FB didn't require much maintenance. The FB was a close friend; the FD was a mistress with expensive taste. The FD needed a tuneup when my twins were born, do it sat in the garage for many years. With a friend's help, I got it running again and listed it on Bring a Trailer. Despite its condition, it sold for $12500. With $3000 of that, I bought a NB Miata.
James: We'll be back in about a month Me: (almost half a year goes by) i think thats cap
"up to speed" sounding like intial D had me dead
I'm gonna have a heart attack when I finally see the Blue Initial D Version of the "Up to speed" intro
Having a heart attack is very Donut.
@@matthewshelley1365 Christ! 😦😅
Can you do a video on the history of Cadillac? I've always wondered how most car "brands" start off and I was thinking and Cadillac hit my mind instantly
Wow, another video on me, I feel so honored :)
Are you gonna redo all the old up to speeds of the depression era
Wait what lol
9fofo i think he meant when james was still lookin' like he was in his crisis era
Godzilla My bad 😂
Great redo because you’ve gotten better James. Appreciate these redoes. (:
I would watch redos of the first ten Up To Speeds on loop for the next year
Zealot Nice 👍. I would suggest that as well. Good idea. (:
SA debuted in 78 FB came out in 84 both 1st gens came 12A & in Japan they came 12A turbo... The FB came 12A & 13B... FC only came with the 13B... The difference between the FB&FC 13B was where the coolant seals where placed amongst motor mounts & turbo 13Bs where 4 port while the NA 13Bs were 6 port... The FB came with 4 wheel disc brakes on the GSL & GSL-SE models...The FC came 4 lug as the SE (Base Model)... FC also came with an Oil Cooler as well... The RX-8 exhaust ports are on the irons & not the housings like all the Rx7 generations & that also caused problems with the Rx-8... My first car was an 84 GSL-SE (FB) Glass sunroof
So this was the last up to speed. Fair thee well then 'Up to speed', this series is beloved by me for introducing me to the Toyota Land cruiser and many other vehicles. I will miss you, fair show, but I am glad I got to experience the LIGHTNING LIGHTNING LIGHTNING in the first place.
looking back at old James, im so glad he discovered cocaine
Cocaine or maybe James is just crushing up and snorting rails of Adderall. He's perfected his Up to Speed delivery. Whatever he's done it seems legit.
The delivery of a key of speed was the key to perfecting his delivery of upto speed
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Stolen joke.
I'm worried some of y'all actually don't know, someone say it lol.
Coming Soon... Comeback Up to Speed Episode: Everything you need to know about Nolan riding a bike
we need an up to speed on NORIYARIO
Hey James im from Malaysia and a big fan of this channel. It would be great if you make an episode Up To Speed about the 24hrs Le Mans 🙌🏻
In a recent video i watched the "cars to beat a hellcat" he mentioned up to speed and said said rip. But i dont think its gone forever. New cars are always coming out so they can always make content.
The FB isnt actually "the first RX-7".. The Series 1 was called SA22C, Series 2 and 3 were then called FB33 Also, the FC never came with the 12A engine. It was either a 13B VDEI NA with 140-ish hp, and 180 for the S4 Turbo II model and a 13B DEI with 160/200hp, the 12A was dropped with the series 3 FB33
thank you
Exactly. I wanted to say something similar
