Disney Wars - Gina Strikes Back

2024 ж. 6 Ақп.

The world is a strange place, and its getting even stranger where Disney Lucasfilm is concerned. After firing Gina Carano from The Mandalorian a couple of years ago, she just announced that she's teamed up with Elon Musk in a major lawsuit against the company. Not only that, but Musk also hinted at a possible takeover bid with Nelson Peltz. Either way, Bob Iger is in a world of trouble right now.

She is a public figure, so under US defamation law, she would have to prove "actual malice" i.e. that Lucasfilm's tweet was a claim of fact (not just an opinion) which they knew was false, and they tweeted it with the intention of harming her reputation. • @@spiffygonzales5160 good question and others have asked me that. Before 2013, we call it the GWL days, it was different. It wasn't great. GWL was out of touch. Divisions like ILM and Skywalker sound (that did strictly contract work for other studios) didn't quite feel it as others IMO. Take for example the TV animation division (LAL). During all-hands people would ask management "what's the roadmap? what are we doing a year from now?" and there were never really answers because the only reason they had jobs is while GWL was having fun. He never really had a plan. People were trying to buy homes and have families and week by week there you were at the mercy of a disconnected billionaire who didn't even know how to make his people feel appreciated during the holidays. It may sound dumb, but one sign that GWL was out of touch was how lame the christman gifts were. Seasoned employees grew used to it and it became an annual joke, new hires were always shocked. GWL put Mich Chau in charge for around 10 years until the reign of KK (who fired Mich) and Disney. She was even more out of touch with the creative atmosphere and was considered one of his biggest mistakes. When she was canned, VFX supe John Knoll walked through the hallways ripping all her terrible feng shui shit off the walls. When KK came in there was some short-lived optimism. For the first time, ever, KK presented the company with a 10 year plan and roadmap of projects. That was the first time we ever saw a plan for anything. Then she introduced her nepotism hires in the story team. It was slow. We didn't feel the darkness immediately. Like a case of herpes that hadn't yet flared up. We heard lots of talk of various projects being scheduled. There was, for the fist time, some sense of security felt that many of us NEVER felt with GWL. I think the first time I really felt something was wrong was after the company/employee screening of "The Force Awakens". The next day at work, many of us were in awe. Quiet and uncomfortable in the elevators. Also, this was time when division between old friends started to take shape. Some of the worst fanboys you will ever meet work(ed) there. If you just said "I don't know, I didn't like it" people would snap. Arguments in the cafeteria. We had an internal messenger system (called BAM) would "bam" you and start arguments because they heard you didn't like 100% of the film. Anything you pointed out that you didn't like they would shit some weak argument out of thin air about how stupid you are and don't get it and then unfriend you on social media. You could not have an opinion against the new movies. You HAD to support them 100%. I dunno, this wasn't the case in the GWL days. Lots of stories of lead animators emailing the VFX supe begging him to talk to GWL about Jar Jar because how terrible it was to animate and they feared audiences would hate it. One small change that I think impacted the spirit the company used to have was dumbing down of the Halloween party. Halloween parties were off the hook. There used to be guidelines and rules (boy do I wish I kept the emails) that would say things like - no costumes over 25' tall - no flame throwers - no diesel engines - no projectiles You just knew that the old model builders of ILM must have done some crazy things over the years. Despite the rules, lots of great costumes and great parties. Disney killed that. The studio campus itself started to change. Less of the occupants were Lucasfilm. As they consolidated people down to smaller spaces. Moved others to Vancouver, Singapore, or London. More and more the common areas started to fill with tech and real estate companies. You would see them outside around campus, at the Starbucks in building C, and in the commons (cafeteria). The name of the company was removed from other the reception desk. Some decorations (old studio props) were removed. That feeling in the air that you were a part of something special began to fade. In her defense, KK did campaign to keep a couple traditions. The annual 4th of July picnic at Skywalker Ranch. The annual free turkey (and they were huge!) for Thanksgiving. It may not sound like much to tech employees in SF getting huge stock bonuses these days, but back then it meant something to us. I miss many of my friends. Had some great laughs on late nights over drinks at our desks. However, I would never work there again. There's so much to unpack I would not know where to begin or how structure my stories. Not sure if this made much sense or just comes across as incoherent rambling.

    • @@j.ceasar Having the right to spread opinions that hurt others is called Freedom of Speech. There is no right Not To Be Offended, it doesn't exist. People _take offense_ at certain opinions, that is an active choice. THEIR choice. Now, if I dehumanize or demonize specific people groups, or incite hatred against them, that is NOT (or shouldn't be) covered under Freedom of Speech. Except in cases where a higher body has judged the situation, as in calling Trump a rapist or Hamas a terrorist group. Those are facts, established by courts of law / government bodies. But having an opinion that clashes with your opinion, that just means your opinion is wrong. Usually. Because I think my opinions through and am open to correction. But dehumanizing me for my opinion, that is actual hate speech -- which is done far too often by people who get offended by someone's opinion. So we have the weird situation where many people use actual hate speech because they accuse someone else, falsely, of using hate speech. That has a name, and it is HYPOCRISY. Case in point: J.K. Rowling. Those who rail against her often use hate speech, while I have NEVER caught her in uttering actual hate speech. She does pose questions, and points out where women are endangered by policies that promote rights of trans people. But that is healthy debate, NOT hate speech.

However, an opinion like "Unrestricted access to women toilets by self-identified trans women opens up these protected spaces to rapists" is pretty factual and can NEVER be hate speech. She didn't have the financial ability to fight back, so they were clearly making an example of her. If Disney didn't want to make an example of her, they could have simply written her character out of the show and kept quiet, and none of this would have happened. Any of the OG Star Wars? Those movies are considered timeless classic. Do you know why? Because they're simply good movies. They weren't made for 8 year old children, they were made for everyone. Modern movies, by contrast, are made for no one - modern audiences that Hollywood desperately wishes would exist. Lastly, to denounce the artform of cartoons and essentially calling them not adult does it such a disservice that it tells us more about your own maturity (or lack thereof) than anything else.
