  • I thought this was a wonderful representation of gay friendship. I know a lot of people are disappointed that it didn't turn romantic but it made me very happy to see friendship between gay people that didn't turn romantic. Too often media likes to portray gay people as if the only other gay person they can be acquainted with is their significant other; truth is, we travel in packs, and being gay & having gay friends doesn't mean we want to date said gay friends.

  • I thought this movie was going to end in suicide, I'm glad that wasn't the case. Such a beautiful movie about friendship. I'm glad it didn't have any intimacy or romance like billions of other LGBTQ films. It was innocent, just everyone trying to decipher and live their truth and I'm sure we can all relate to that. Loved it. I was a closeted boy and rugby is a huge part of our culture here in New Zealand but I hated playing it growing up because of who I knew I was. I would always get teased by the other players for being a little feminine, tried to fake injuries so I wouldn't have to play because I couldn't endure the nasty things they would say but my dad made sure I played. I'm 29 now and things like that don't phase me anymore. It was rough then but I'm out and content. Like the English teacher said, "It gets better". Anyway, I feel like this comment is spiraling off in all directions, maybe because I'm a little tipsy, so bye haha

    @LilTRoberts1000@LilTRoberts10007 жыл бұрын
    • LilTRoberts1000 Nah, it's about friendship, being "popular and fake" vs. being "an authentic version of yourself". Also it's fucking irritating how all friendships nowadays: 2 people = Automatically Dating. Seriously, have people forgotten that the majorty of those on Earth aren't going to be dating at all, but are instead friends, acquaintances, and strangers? Or that dating is NOT the default answer to every 2 people that ever existed??? I figure that suicide, or social isolation might be more relevant in this movie than "banging". So yup, start reading more/stop fapping so much. :|

    • I appreciate a gay-themed film which shows two gay men as friends as opposed to lovers because it breaks away from the stereotype of because two men are gay and coexist together, they have to be lovers, and it doesn't work like that.

    • I actually like how the story is leaning on the friendship side since Ned's sexuality wasnt really cleared up. If Ned's straight then that would have been more beautiful since that would depict a form of friendship between a straight guy and a gay person. Doesn't need to be romantic at all.

      @samwan3491@samwan34912 жыл бұрын
  • The main character might not be gay, it was ambiguous if you think about it. For me, it fits the story better if you don't assume he's gay right away. He just wasn't into sports. Then here comes this athletic uber cool guy, and he's the one who turned out to be gay. Very nice role reversals going on in this movie.

    • “In writing and shooting this film, I never operated with the clear assumption that Ned was gay, or that he wasn’t straight,” Butler says. “I’m obsessed with male friendship and I really wanted to respect that idea that they could be allies. I’m fascinated by male friendship, by pushing the limits of that and examining how men are supposed to behave in each other’s company and the ways in which we’re not supposed to express things to each other, you know?” "When it came to making my feature Handsome Devil, I was determined that the story would run along the tram lines of a buddy comedy, because even if you believe both the young leads are gay, or not straight (by no means a certain thing, itself), then the fullest expression of that friendship, of homosexual friendship, of any friendship is… friendship."

    • I rewatched after reading your comment and yeah there was no direct answer from Ned that he’s gay as well. There was a narration of his when he said that he thought he’s the only one on the outside but after seeing Connor went inside the bar, he could have been wrong. And that might just mean Ned’s on the outside because he’s not into rugby and Connor’s on the outside because he’s gay.

It is about having the guts to prove that the honesty about yourself can make you stand firmly on your feet defying what people think know about you. VERY GOOD SCRIPT AND THE ACTORS DESERVE AT LEAST ONE OSCAR, EACH. One of the most beautiful movie I saw in years.

  • I understand why people were miffed that Ned and Conor didn't end up together. There was a good amount of scenes that featured the "love" gaze. Those scenes certainly felt like the build up to a romance. That aside, I loved that the movie featured a friendship rather than a relationship. Despite there not being a clarification about Ned's sexuality, it is often alluded that he is not straight (personally, I feel as though he is bisexual), it was still nice to have that particular representation. Gay people don't just date each other, they can be friends too. It's something media tends to forget.

  • I expected that they ended up together but what I witnessed in this movie was they had friends romance over being boyfriends. Which is unique coz mostly of this kind of 🌈 being couple in the end. A message that inspired so many people through this and a touching story. I admire Ned for being a great friend to Connor despite he was insulted and bullied at school included (Connor) Still, he sees a silver lining to be true to himself and not letting someone to force him to be like that. To Connor, you're lucky for having Ned as a pure friend. He always there for you, when you're doubting yourself and giving up but Ned comes to rescue you and inspire to believe in of what you are and can do. How ironic right? Ned remains unbreakable inspite of his bad experiences and the way he treated at school. His character is immaculate. This is universal representation to those people who are struggling and dealing pressure on them, identifying who really they are and not being controlled by someone else. I even like this more. Pure Masterpiece and truly recommend this to watch.😍😭

FUNNY AS HECK, heartfelt and important, I love how it depicts a friendship rather than a romance. Ned is a nerd who everyone thinks is gay although it never outright says his sexuality. Connor is a jock who is secretly gay. It’s a wonderful take on breaking the stereotypes and showing a wholesome queer friendship. Plus, Andrew Scott is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT 💯

  • I was so disappointed when I watched this and a romantic relationship wasn't developed between them! However it wasn't a romantic movie to begin with and in the end i saw that gorgeous man finally as a love interest in red white and royal blue 🤭❤️
