3 Series drag race let’s goooo!
We’ve got our hands on a BMW M340i, M340d & 330e, and they’re going head-to-head to see just how different the performance is of a petrol, diesel & plug-in hybrid 3 Series. However, they’re not all stock - each car has had a stage one tune! So let’s see how they compare.
Starting with Mat in the M340d Touring, it’s powered by a 3-litre straight-six diesel that can now put down 430hp and 850Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and it weighs in at 1,945kg.
Next up we have the M340i. It’s equipped with a 3-litre straight-six petrol, and it now puts down 470hp and 630Nm. Like the diesel power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and it weighs in at just 1758kg.
Then finally we have the 330e. It’s equipped with a 2-litre turbocharged 4 cylinder coupled with an electric motor, and these combine to put down 400hp and 700Nm. Power is only sent to the rear wheels only via an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and it’s also the lightest car here, tipping the scales at scales at 1,740kg.
So the M340i has the most power, but will it be an easy win? Or could the diesel or plug-in hybrid snatch it? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

I have a stage 1 330e and I honestly love it because it's the cheapest straight line performance car I think of. I pootle to work and back on electric only mode then if I want a bit of speed in xtraboost mode it absolutely flies! Mine was dyno'd at 415bhp in xtraboost which is crazy all things considered. The downside of the car is that you have to be careful about oil temp - if you've been running in electric only and suddenly want to boot it, you have a cold engine and have to wait 5 mins for it to warm up. Overall I love it though, I average well over 50mpg all of the time but have enough power to surprise 95% of cars on the road. Also - it does have launch control its just extremely finicky to get working!

The problem is the ECUs are locked by BMW. Pre 2020 cars are much cheaper to map
@@Carlos1180 this exactly. You either have to get a tuning box or send the ECU to Femto in Finland for a bench unlock. If you're looking to tune, the cars built before June 2020 are the way to go. And it's important that they haven't received ECU updates after that date, else they're locked too.

Wonderful lesson for all the kids who think torque is more important than hp. The M340i has 40hp more than the diesel but 220Nm less torque, and yet, was clearly and consistently faster. It's the hp that counts in a drag race. Torque is great for towing.

The argument of "petrol engines are very economical nowadays thus diesels lose their point" doesn't really stand the test of... the grim reality. Although petrol (gasoline) engines have gotten very frugal - they will still rip your wallet out of your pocket (and the money contained therein) - once you start mashing on them, while diesels will retain reasonable economy even when you're indeed pressing hard. That's the inherent torque of the diesel playing itself out, although in a straight line dragrace the diesel will lose once the higher revs of the petrol engine kick in - that is where it's obvious that even with the higher cylinder pressure pushing down on the piston helps diesels - you simply cannot fight against simple math, meaning, multiplication, meaning, the higher the revs, the MORE TIMES the piston gets pushed by the cylinder/combustion pressure in the petrol engine. And these revs just cannot be as high in a diesel - because how everything just weighs more. That said, I'm still a fan of the good old oil burners, seeing how relatively huge cars (either of my BMW 5 series 530dx or my Audi Allroad 3.0TDI) can return great consumption figures at abt. 6.2l/100km on the highway, both weighing abt. 1.9 tons, both being awd (4wd in case of the audi) and both having 6 cylinders. And both those cars would be considered pretty old at this point, meaning, fuel figures have gotten even lower still. By the way - you can hate on the design of latest BMWs (and you rightfully should) - but this video alone is a testament to their engineering, at least in the engine department. The long lineup of inline 6 engines, both petrol and diesel (in the latter case the evolution from M57 to N57 to B57 in this video) is some of the best - if not THE BEST - in the industry. So go, BMW I guess (but lose the design team ---- NOW!). By the way - isn't it the first time when a number like 340d makes sense again - but not in the way BMW intended? Of course it's not a 4litre engine - what with its 3litres and 2 turbos - but isn't the original HP number just that - 340? Which on its own is pretty impressive. Either way, a brilliant race - thanks for the video from Latvia.
Bingo. Small petrol engines can be frugal but to get those numbers the engine has to be very small and you have to drive it so slowly that you'd actually be an annoying choke point on the road. Drive normally and the advantage is slowly being erased away. And if you want more power out of them then any semblance of fuel economy is out of the window. Turbo diesels are perfect ICE vehicles. You have good torque in a rev range that matters in every day riding, meaning down low, you get good performance and still the fuel economy is great even if you sometimes push it harder from time to time.
I had the 330e and it has launch control. gearbox sport, traction off and pedal all the way to the click

Matt, How about this race : Drag race diesel vs petrol with both limited to 2500 / 3000 RPM? You have to shift up at 2500 / 3000 RPM in each gear. Then see which one is faster? (Of course it'll be the diesel :) )
Also show fuel consumption, diesel would win
