In this fishing challenge episode of BlacktipH, we go offshore fishing for cobia with my buddies Wesley, Greyson, and Jason, and the goal is to see which technique will catch more fish, spearfishing or Rod and Reel! Our targeted species was giant cobia! We began the day by using live bait and bucktail jigs, bouncing them off the bottom. Greyson hooked the first cobia, and it was a monster, weighing around 55lbs! Shortly after, I hooked the next cobia on an orange bucktail. This fish fought hard and probably around 40-45lbs. Wes and Greyson decided to jump in with their spearguns to catch more than we did on rod and reel. We caught several more cobia using the rod and reel technique. Wes and Greyson were able to spear two more cobia, along with a black grouper that Wes had spotted. Overall the rod and reel caught more fish than the spearguns!

Spearfishing is MUCH more environmentally friendly as you only take what you need, no other fish get injured and no fishing gear gets left behind as ghost fishing gear. Its why I've started to move over towards spearfishing more and more :) I will add however, 9:35, NEVER load a speargun out of the water, it is ludicrously dangerous!

It wasn’t from holding the spool, the leader frayed off. Nothing you can do. That thing weighed well over 200lbs, hard to move that much weight with light tackle.

Is calms fish down immediately pushing on the eyes. I'm sure it's unpleasant for them but it works incredibly well to stop them fighting.
@@DudeAndDogsSailing I spearfish and that’s not why we do it. We do it because it gives us a better grip on the fish because the eye sockets are very strong and firm.
@@jimbo7497 its referred to as myofacial trigger point. An unintended response from the body by pressing a pressure point elsewhere in the body. I'm not saying it's not a good grip point. But there is an actual medical reasoning behind this. Temporary paralysis due to eye pressure attached to nerves. Crazy right. I also do lots of spearfishing and you got to learn something new today.

Me and my friends used went spear fishing at stikney point down in Sarasota area and swam down to the reef and caught a couple snook and sheep head and swimming on our way back 3 sharks surrounded us and luckily there was some rocks so we stood on top of them and had to fight them off unfortunately we had to throw the sheep head we had and kept the snooks and got out of there lmao that was the last time we went spear fishing 😂 how I miss those days 🤦🏻♂️
