The Indian Air Force gives the highest priority to keeping itself abreast with the latest technology that’s also being continuously upgraded as it enters service. The IAF’s approach to the challenge is a holistic one. The IAF focuses on a few key imperatives as it endeavours to remain technologically relevant and address the progress of India’s adversaries.
One of the steps implemented is the induction of technology or the development of such technology by the DRDO. The other methodology adopted is the infusion of technology in its legacy systems. Upgrades of existing platforms is a relevant example. Such an approach also involves the upgradation of IAF ground systems. Finally, the IAF is arming its platforms with new weapon systems; Astra BVR missile being an example.
However, equipment alone does not guarantee performance optimisation. Training is an extremely important aspect, and it requires using technology in training to drive skill levels upwards. Human resource optimisation requires the highest standards of skilling. There is also the requirement to update doctrines and the IAF has published its new doctrine last year.
Atmanirbharta is also an important priority area for the IAF. Its need is better perceived when the Ukraine and Gaza wars are studied. The IAF is trying to build an Indian eco-system. Such initiatives as iDEX have majorly contributed. A new Directorate of Aerospace Development has been functional for over two years now. Regional chapters under this Directorate are being opened.
Such projects as the LCA Tejas have been a great boost to indigenisation. 83 LCA Mk 1A were ordered, followed by another 97. LCA of course poses unique challenges. It has to integrate Russian, Western and Indian weapon systems on the same platform. As far as the Muti Role Fighter Aircraft project is concerned, prospective OEMs partners are in discussion with the Air Force. What technologies will they bring along, what will need indigenisation and development are the issues being addressed.
HAL’s helicopter division has been performing very well, the DCAS mentioned. HAL has perfected the drive system that’s critical for helicopters. IAF are now looking at a 5-ton Indian Multi-Role Helicopter. HAL will have to build on its production capabilities, both for fighter aircraft and helicopters, to ensure it meets the timelines, the Deputy Chief said.

    • Completeley disagree, didn't ask tough Qs on lack of 5th Gen aircraft, shortage of refuelers, AWACS, long range bombers, etc. We are no math for China if they decide to attack us. What fools world are you all living in?

  • Appreciate the interaction with the Deputy CAS but why all the questions to him are soft ball questions? Don't need to be confrontational but some legit tough questions are warranted when interacting with the user (IAF), development agency (DRDO) and building partner (HAL). Some immediate questions that come to mind that would have been great to get the Deputy CAS to respond would have been: 1) Why is the development period for IAF projects much longer compared to near peers like Turkey, South Korea, etc? 2) What about the criticism that the IAF's ASQRs are arduous and unrealistic for indigenous developments but are compromised for imported equipment? Prime example was TAPAS/ Dhristi fiasco. 3) Given the delay in MRFA, the timing for delivery will be same or worse than LCA MK2. Why not double down and fast track MK2 or ORCA program instead of banking on MRFA?

  • MRFA should be scraped now.. it was supposed to be delivered in atleast late early 20s.. but getting those in 30s make no sense instead af should go for 2 or 3 sqd of stealth aircrafts

  • Some new info but once again you failed to ask IAF why we have so much delay with 5th Gen aircraft/AMCA program when our neighboorhood already has these and our adversaries have already inducted them (China) with Pak, Turkey soon to get them. How do we plan to address this gap? Also, no long range bomber, inadequate fuelers, AWACS. Sorry but you soft pedalled this interview.

  • IAF need long range accurate AAM and ASM on our fighters . During the duel in J&K few years back we were unable to shot down a single Pakistanis fighter but they managed to shot down our fighter .We later came up with a lame excuses that we didn't had a long range AAM .
