How do I know if my transmission is tr580 or tr690? It’s a legacy 2018
Thanks, this video cleared alot of things for me in regards to the solenoids faults . Cheers.
thanks & cheers
Hi i am new subscriber i've seen your other clips..you ar doing everything by the book ..keep it up...
thanks & cheers
Super useful information here. Thank you!
no worries, cheers
Thank you for this video, it is really helpful and informative.
thanks & cheers
Learned a bit, really good video. I didn't know the diff. oil could leak into the trans fluid and then show the trans as being overfilled. Thanks from the other side of the Planet.
thanks & cheers
finally a proper video cause i want to do this to my 2014 XV
thanks & cheers 👍
Excellent video! Thank you.
thanks & cheers
Thank you, Man! Very useful.
thanks & cheers
This is great. I might do this for my 2010 Outback or tell my mechanic to do it.
thanks & cheers
Very informative.. thank you

Just FYI, The item that he pulled off the CVT was not an Oil filter. It was a oil strainer. Big difference! The shop manual shows that the transmission does have an CVT oil filter but it is unservicable without removing transmission and splitting the casing.
From what I understand is that this oil 'filter' doesn't need to be replaced because it's just a fine mesh screen. Just use a bit of brake cleaner and clean it up and reuse it. Only replace it if it was damaged somehow.
The ourpose of a "strainer" is to filter out ANY particles. Strainer or filter is irrelevant. The size of particles it stops from going back is relevant. The me turned inline filter does exist inside the transmission and is NOT serviceable. If one needs to pull the transmission apart to replace it, then throw the whole thing in the bin because you can easily buy a 2nd hand in very good condition one for less than $1000, unlike from the stealership who wants +$15k for the CVT only not the front diff. It cost me $1500 to get an 18oookm CVT in which has been working flawlessly. Yes, DO replace the Strainer.
Really appreciate 🙏 thank you
cheers
Thanks for the video. a question, how many liters of CVT oil should I buy to change CVT oil and filter? Thank you
Gr8 vid, I want transmission dipsticks back. At least. It has a drain plug. Cheers 🍺
thanks and cheers
"At least it has a drain plug"...........Geez, don't give the manufacturers any ideas!😄
Front diff oil level is not checked at the fill plug. There is another plug near the drain plug, you fill unitl it comes out of the level plug.
thanks for that. cheers
Nice
cheers
ever installed inline filters on transcooler lines i see some sell the filters for trans lines and pwr steering lines. they look like over grown inline fuel filters.
yeah they are good, however you will still need to replace them regularly or the magnet inside it can get blocked and reduce cooler flow. cheers
@YepThatsIt - if I have Tr580 in winter I have belt/chain slip, in Summer everything is ok. Fluid has been changed, same. What could be a problem? Solenoid or nothing can be done? Thanks!
Have you ever considered putting your additional super strong magnet on the outside of the pan? This way whenever the fluid gets changed you can just remove the magnet first before draining the fluid. It may help to move the magnet around the bottom of the pan to loosen up the metal particles so it can drain more easily. Just an idea I've had for years but never heard of anyone who did it and what their experience had been with it.
hi, thanks for that. we often put on several magnets under trans pan or on drain plugs before we remove pan while we are testing. helps clean things up a bit before dismantling cheers
great video. Have you ever also "flushed" the cvt oil to get the oil thats sitting in the system, the cooler for example, out? Thats what I did. But I didnt do the filer or magnet. I may attempt that this summer after watching your video. (I got 260,000 miles on mine).
hi, flushing solenoids gets results more than flushing trans. we usually only flush trans/converter when coolant has entered trans and hope we did it soon enough to salvage the linings on clutches and bands. you are better off adding magnets, bypassing the trans heatexchanger/cooler and doing regular service and magnet clean. cheers
Hi, great video thanks. What torque do you do the bolts up to with the cork gasket? Did you use any sealant as well?
hi, actually depends on the thickness/quality and rubber content of the cork/rubber gasket. has to be tight enough to seal properly but not so much as to deform the gasket. put those gaskets on dry as they will slip and deform as you tighten them. also make sure the bolt holes arent pushing up and cut the gasket as you tighten them. we press them back down with our arbor press. we dont use silicone or gasket cement. cheers
8-10 foot lbs
Very informative video I have a skyactiv Mazda with 6 speed auto Mazda does not recommend fluid change and even the dealer refuses to do it. What do you recommend in my case to do? I replaced the fluid first at 70K and another one at 135 K with filter and magnet cleaned.
thanks, dealerships don`t touch auto trans...they will all tell you "sealed for life" whereas from the horses mouth...the manufacturers and designers have told me "sealed for life of warranty". my advice is take it to transmission specialist. cheers
Great video! Where did you get a pan gasket? I have not been able to find one at all. What magnets did you use and will they be affected by trans fluid temp which degrades their ability? Can you add links to gasket and magnets? Thanks!
hi, if you`re in aust contact me on our facebook link, we can sell you. cheers
@@YepThatsIt I am in US, was hoping to try out a gasket but I was able to get some Permatex that will work. I've looked quite a bit and haven't seen a gasket available. Can the strainer be cleaned? What did you use to remove the old silicone gasket?
Same here. I think I’m the US you have to buy the pan seal kit. Australians have access to individual parts. Im in US and i gotta go buy some liquid gasket pisses me off.
@@davidtestin5665 hi, what permatex sealant did you use? Also, did you wait till the transmission was cool to seal the pan? I'm looking to change my CVT fluid but at a DYI garage so I'm paying by the hour.
Thanks for the video. I’ve 2010 2.0 subaru legacy cvt automatic with 150.000 milage. I nearly bought this car and the old user hadnt changed the transmisson oil before. I’m not sure now shell I change it or dont touch it. (By the way there is no problem with shifting)
hi, service wont usually fix any issues, but it is definitely good for maintenance. basically the cooler and cleaner you keep a trans, the longer it will provide reliability and the longer it will last. cheers
@@YepThatsIt thank you so much🙏🏻
the packaging for the box where you get it, or what would be the part number for a 2018 Forester
hi, the part numbers vary depending on where you purchase from. cheers
Hi, What is happening about the 3 maybe 4 litres of fluid in the torque converter and cooler??? Should not that be replaced also, it will only contaminate the NEW fluid .
hi, generally trans service approx half fluid comes out. this is usually enough to boost the fluid properties enough. we only do full flush when someone puts in wrong fluid or coolant or water enters trans...some trans gear oil can enter trans also.you will also need to remedy the reason of how it got into trans. choice is always yours to decide. cheers
We'll , There's A Reason It's Recommended To Drain & Refill Fluid , Run It Through Gears & Repeat . Which Would Ensure 90-95 % Of Fluid Is Changed .
Hi there got code 0971, I had AT trans, ABS, Hill assisst come on. Drained and filled the transmission, did do the filter in the pan or check magnets. Now occasionally get those lights to come back on....have tryed to reset computer by taking battery cables off for 2 hrs. Checked with heat gun tran pan goes up to has high as 180degrees. Might be reason codes still come up occasionally. Should I take to dealer and get a backflush of transmission or can I drop transmission pan put new screen , ck magnets and refill?
hi, sounds like a contaminated solenoid c issue if you have fault codes. cheers
@@YepThatsIt Thanks. Going to have dealer run check diagnostics test on it tomorrow. Was wondering do I have to replace the solenoid.. which is roughly 900 for valve body. Guess I could find a replacement Valve body at a junkyard or refurbished for half that cost. Would drain trans pan again and this time put in a new screen or clean and blow dry old screen? One last question if I still drive it till I fix it , I guess I should watch out for slipping trans, smelll of trans oil or anything else unusual?
Good day, can you confirm if the other CVTF filter (31835AA030) is accessible and meant to be replaced during heavy servicing alongside the filter in this video (31728AA141), or is it only accessible during full transmission rebuilds? Thank you so much and keep safe!
hi, to replace cartridge filter you need to remove trans. cheers
@@YepThatsIt Noted, thanks! Is it meant to be replaced periodically as well or is it mainly left for full rebuilds?
Good video. was this Subaru Impreza, if so what model year ? Cheers.
sorry cant recall if not mentioned in vid. is tr580 trans if that helps. cheers
it's an XV or in some places called a crosstrek
do you have a partnumber of a pan gasket like in the video?
hi, if you`re in australia you can contact us via our facebook link in description on any of our vids. cheers
@@YepThatsIt I am in Poland and numeric code of this gasket would definitely help find something equal as soon our market proposes only rubber ones.
Hi I have a 2017 impreza but the exhaust is on the left hand side up against the fill plug difficult to access, is there another plug on the case you can use to fill from?
hi, you can fill, but how would you measure the fluid level? cheers
@@YepThatsIt thanks for your reply, there's is a plug on the opposite side of the box on the shifter side at the same level. I dont have a diagram to tell me if its just a plug or if it holds something mechanical behind it.
@@ltkaffeyI hope you did not use the plug on the left. I did and regretted it.
@@HarukiYamamoto Why what happened ?
Hi YepThatsIt, how importance is inline filter ?
hi, anything that helps keep the muck circulating in trans is beneficial. i also add magnets. the cleaner and cooler you keep a trans combined with regular filter service will prolong trans life and reliability. cheers
Isn't there a check plug for the front diff? I think you over filled it if you filled it all the way up to the fill plug.
no worries, thanks for that
Great video. About how much of the total capacity (~12 qts) do you recover dropping the pan?
hi, measuring what comes out will only be a rough guide. best to measure according to manufacturers specs in case it has been over or under filled.cheers
Dear. I have sent my Subaru Impreza 2013 to garage to service front and rear differential oil, they kept 4l of differential oil 75w90 in cvt unit instead by wrong and left front differential unit empty, I have driven the car for 4days. After I have noticed, kindly give your advice.
hi, take it back to the garage. if wrong fluid in trans it will absorb into friction linings and cause issues. cheers
Hi Mohamed. This happened to me to. I drove it for about 20km before realizing they used the wrong fill plug. Took it to a dealer who dropped the pan, drained the cvt oil, put fresh oil and filled up my diff oil. They initially wanted to do a rebuild. It has now been 2days since and the car drives normal, if not better than before the whole mess begun. Did you do the same and did you experience any problems after?
hi! can i pour RT580 subaru valvoline cvt fluid?
hi, any compatible to suit your trans is ok. cheers
Is a relearn procedure needed after valve body replacement?
hi, sometimes yes, sometimes no. usually best to though. just make sure battery good and charged, all electrical connection good, fluid level right - trans will generally only relearn properly when reaches operating temp. cheers
Where do you get the gasket? Been looking everywhere
hi, you can contact me via our facebook link in description. cheers
Hello. The filter was a dirty? Its necessary to open the cvt every change oil?
hi, the idea is to clean trans pan and magnets as well. cheers
@@YepThatsIt Pan was dirty? How many magnet you added?
I dont believe there is a replacable filter on the 580s in the 6th gen
hi there, my 2013 XV is giving me hard time. it accelerates so slow and AT oil temp ABS etc all lights have come on the dashboard. The error code was something P0700. Do you have any idea what to change? Is it worth to change the oil? The mileage is about 200000kms. Thanks for any respond.
hi, at this stage, oil change on its own and changing filter will do very little to help improve your trans. on any trans a regular filter service and clean pan and magnet ( also add additional magnets) would have helped keep metallic debris away from solenoids. i recommend every 50,000km when trans has done under 200,000km and then when has done over 200,000km to do trans filter service every 25,000km to get make life out of it. the valve bodies on these trans are also notorious for wearing out bores where valves run. check all the basics first, then remove trans pan and see what is happening, then you have to decide if you want to try checking out valve body and solenoids. good luck & cheers
@@YepThatsIt cheers bro very appreciated
Code P0700 - See this explanation which may help you. www.autozone.com/diy/diagnostic-trouble-codes/p0700-transmission-control-system-malfunction
@@YepThatsIt Sounds like the valve body. What did you find out?
What is the cause of solenoid failure on TR580 transmission? Would regular (every 50 k) service prevent this?
hi, a regular filter service and cleaning magnet ( also add magnets ) to help keep magnetic debris away from solenoids and sensors will allow trans to last longer. cheers
Lack of fluid changes
there is no filter in gb oil pan.
Do you have a shop, or can you suggest someone with Subaru CVT expertise in Brisbane?
hi, i`m in north east country vic. cheers
Any idea on how often the inline paper filter needs to be replaced. Looks like a proper pain in the anus if you have to pull the transmission every time to get to it.
hi, install an inline trans filter in cooling line, just be aware those filters are directional. cheers
I think you over filled the front diff. There's a third port on the front diff for oil level check.
thanks for pointing that out. cheers
Come on subaru, a filter inside the trans. They were on the saki when they designed that.
no arguments there !
Same with the magnet, why not have a magnetized drain plug, or easy access to an internal magnet
this oil does not have a subaru tolerance
why do you think that? www.tritechlubricants.com/lube-guide/ www.tritechlubricants.com/dev/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/9365-CVT-10-COMBO-DATA-2.pdf

@@igorsams5413 Simply Subaru maintains trade agreements with oil brands such as Idemitsu (Lineartronic II). It does not necessarily mean that it is the only alternative. In fact there are better cvtf fluids for these fully synthetic continuous drive boxes. Examples such as: Red Line CVT, Pentosin CVT or Ravenol NS-2 / J1, have better characteristics and are formulated for these specific needs.
cringe watching you use metal chisel on sealing surface. regardless great video.
hi, yes i cringe at what i need to do sometimes too. cheers
for the beginning of him taking the pan off its not that bad since the outside edge isn't really the sealing surface if you're using RTV. But at like 7:25 holy hell hes ripping it to bloody bits
690 is on turbos not on jen 1
thanks for that cheers
I have a tr690 on my 6-cylinder outback, in my workshop manual Subaru have called that tr690 a gen1 transmission. It's got nothing to do with the generations of the Subarus however
@JayJay-gl2df that is correct, they put it on turbos regardless of generation
