I Can't BELIEVE I caught giant sheepshead on CORN!!
In this video I head out kayak fishing for sheepshead with a secret bait that I have never used before! As soon as I started dropping this bait around a bridge I started hooking up with sheepshead and used this sheepshead rig to catch a BIG Sheepshead!!

    • They are very abundant, get very big, and tug hard. They eat mostly barnacles from pilings but will hit most anything dropped in front of them. Fresh dead shrimp works fine. No need to buy expensive live bait for them. Most people don't like to eat them, but that mindset is slowly changing.

    • My dad was great at getting good hook sets on Sheepheads when others (like me) were missing them left and right. Especially in fast moving tide changes at choke points like the Oregon Inlet at the OBX in NC. He would say the secret was “setting the hook before you felt the bite”. He also often rigged it drop-shot so the weight was below the hook, sometimes using 1/8 oz above the leader and a split shot or 1/16 jig head below, with the hook swinging off a 3-4” dropper loop between the leads. It kept just enough tension on the line that he could feel anything. He’d say stuff like “oh there’s one sizing up my bait right now…he’s thinking, he’s thinking, he’s staring really hard…”BAM hook set. And my brother and I NEVER SAW THE ROD TWITCH or line move or anything that indicated a nibble.

  • Used to use this trick of canned whole corn 50 years ago for catfish and carp - 1st day of fishing might not catch many, but when 1st day of fishing is over, throw the rest of the canned corn in the water as chum and come back the next day with corn and WOW - fish are biting everywhere! It was lots of fun and it worked really well. Back then it was 3 cans of corn for $1.00 where I lived.

  • From Ocala, Florida...live in the Midwest now...Iowa. 21" Sheepshead but didn't know they tasted good, so it went back in. I moved when I graduated High School, so I fished where my daddy fished, which is freshwater. So I trusted someone telling me the Sheepshead tasted like crap, so I tossed it back. I fish for a lot of crappie and catfish now days...but am starting to make more and more trips back to Florida now. So my PB Cobia was 31"...caught on my last trip to Florida in October.

  • Great video! If you use the corn and hominy again, maybe try putting a piece of each on your hook at the same time. I had no idea sheepshead would bite a splitshot! The tide has always been ripping and or wind blowing to hard to use anything less than a 1/4-1/5 ounce egg weight EVERY time I tried to catch sheepshead lol! I also think like someone else posted that crappie bites might be another good idea. Also live meal worms would probably work good. Meal worms are my favorite bluegill and shellcracker bait.

  • Savannah, Ga. Started fishing a few years ago. Haven't caught a sheep yet. Love catching the trout for the table. Reds are a blast to fight but not my fav to eat. Not much structure within an easy pedaling distance from where I usually launch to target sheeps. May try the corn/hominy in Jacksonville next week though. Love the content!

  • I'm in Southeastern NC and have been watching your channel to learn about Sheepshead. Have never caught any but would like to. Maybe I'll try the hominy and put some scent spray or gel on it and see if that increases the bite action. Also am going to try the nightcrawler to see if that works around here. Normally everyone around here uses Fiddlers, Mud Crabs, and chunks of Blue Crab to catch the sheep.

    @j.varizzlethefisher@j.varizzlethefisher4 ай бұрын
    • Yeah definitely go with crabs for your first sheepshead. All of those things work but nothing works as good as fiddler crabs.

Was using the Hoodwink bumping bottom for sauger and caught a drum (freshwater). Hopefully that is an indication for how they will work on redfish.
