But over time we have discovered some uncanny and sometimes unnerving things under the ice too! There are instances of mummies so well preserved they look like they’re just sleeping! Along with people, there are loads of interesting, preserved animal remains, that practically transport scientists back thousands of years to study them closely. The Otzi Man
In September 1991, explorers came across a 5300-year-old mummy sticking out of the ice in the Otztal Alps on the border between Austria and Italy. It was named the Otzi man. This mummy was found to be the genetic ancestor to many Austrian people. It was incredibly well preserved due to the icy conditions where the man died. He’s Europe’s oldest known natural human mummy and has been very useful in helping scientists learn more about the Copper Age. The mummy also has sixty-one tattoos all over its body.
This is the earliest known evidence of tattoos, but it’s not just for aesthetic purposes, according to scientists. The Otzi man’s well-preserved body helped scientists determine that he suffered from various illnesses such as parasitic worms, gallbladder stones, and a joint disorder. The tattoos have been found on the parts of his body that had deteriorated the most. He is said to have died from a blow to the skull and was found with an arrow stuck in his shoulder. He must have pissed someone off badly!
Blood Falls
In East Antarctica, there’s a waterfall that looks like it spews bloody water. While it looks very creepy there is a sound scientific explanation for its dark, disturbing color. Known as Blood Falls, it is an outflow of an iron oxide-tainted plume of saltwater, flowing from the tongue of Taylor Glacier onto the ice-covered surface of West Lake Bonney in the Taylor Valley. At first, the color was attributed to red algae but later it was discovered to be because of the presence of iron oxide.
There is ancient seawater trapped beneath Taylor Glacier that crystalized over time and its dissolved salts were expelled over time. As a result, the trapped seawater was concentrated in brines that had two or three times higher salt content than normal ocean water. The brine makes the water red and gives it the appearance of blood. So don’t worry, there’s nothing sinister going on underneath!

I love that the Ice Maiden had tattoos and it meant she was high status. Some people look at me like I'm scum because I have tattoos. I live in a town with a lot of people who are very judgmental.
