  • I made a hummingbird fountain, but, instead of hummingbirds… I have bees! I don’t mind so much. Bees here in the desert need water for sure. A couple weeks ago I bought 2 turkey basters, installed them on the big hummingbird playground I made with a cookie sheet. But the bees have taken it over! My hummingbirds love my 5 foot tall copper fountain that is shaped like a yucca plant. Water comes out the top and trickles down the “blossoms” and drips off the spikey leaves into a big copper basin. I have built numerous solar and electrical water features in my yard.. but the copper fountain is the one the birds love! Today I built the “hanging” fountain. It is hanging on a shepherds hook with a regular bird feeder and a hummingbird feeder. Now I want to make a kcup bubbler!

    • I wish we could share pics! I'm doing electroculture in my vegetable garden so I have a lot of copper and brass wire to be creative with bird baths. My problem isn't the bees coming around, I welcome them, it's the wasps that are loving my fountains. I don't want them and I'm highly allergic! I haven't found any positive qualities they have for my garden.

Wasps get a bad rap, but they are good. However, I do understand if you are allergic, you must protect yourself. “Wear light-colored, smooth-finished clothing. Avoid perfumed soaps, shampoos, and deodorants. Don't wear cologne or perfume.” I hope that helps.

  • You made my day. I started a wildlife garden/gardens a few years ago and learning as I go. I found out if you leave your yard untouched all year every year in about a 20’ radius. Our endangered lightening bugs will start using your untouched area to make their home. They need untouched land a year, because it takes that long for their life cycle to go around and most people don’t understand this and lightening bugs are disappearing rapidly. The cicadas use the area as well. They too have an all year life cycle and can’t be disturbed or they’ll die out. So I started thinking “ I need more water for the birds and bees. My bird bath doesn’t cut it. It needs to be filled and cleaned daily. I love all your ideas! I can’t wait to do this. My bird will be so happy, especially the cardinals. They’re obsessed with flowing water.

    • I hear you. I don’t even mow my back yard, maybe once a year. It naturally dies back in the winter, I’ve found. I throw out wildflower seeds (well, I try, but the birds eat 99.9% of them🙄. I put out especially water, seeds, I do mow the front, but I’m happy to see that more people are allowing them to get a bit shaggy during spring. They put up the no mow March signs or whatever. I have a lot of trees in my yard for an urban area, and I let them be, as much as I can, anyway, and let the dropped leaves just stay there until well into spring so the bugs can have a safe place to winter over and be food for the birds , a bit of a dichotomy lol. I do have to clean them up eventually, there is a lot in a small area, and it’s a fire hazard. But every little thing helps, eh? I do my clean up once a year, when the leaves are very dry. And not bare ground, I try to leave just a little. I figure that’s the safest time. The chicks/bugs/whoever are done. Blessings to the people out there who care about this kind of thing, we take their survival, and should help out in any way we can.

  • Thanks so, sooooo much for the fabulous videos! Made two this morning…one for myself, one for my mom. Not sure I can post pics but will try. Paid about $10 for each solar pump, then two decorative buckets from Dollar Tree, and a four-pack of plates. Picked up a 20-pack of jumbo straws for about $2. Would opt for another kind in the future. Mine were “eco-friendly” and although they did work, they’re rather brittle. I grabbed empty, cleaned out goat cheese containers to rest atop the plates. So at most, $15 per fountain. Again, THANK YOU!!! 😍

  • I had a plant basin on an outdoor bird cage with water and a rock in the middle. The crows brought bread and it rotted in the water (to high to see what was going on) This is the perfect project for a fresh water (I have an R.O. setup so a regular supply of very good water) for the hummingbirds I feed during winter as they seem not to be interested with so many flowers here in west Los Angeles 5 miles from the ocean, but a bird bath has to bring them in. No wiring, no water line, works for me. Already ordered the pump. Thanks, I'll adapt for my own version but will be the same basic system. I have a small wired pump in a small fish tank that can be adjusted but saw no text about that for more or less flow.

  • Your ideas are so creative and your enthusiasm just sparkles. All the bubbler fountains are great as well as the feeders. So, so many hummers at one time is more than amazing. The dozen or so I normally have are always fighting and defending their chosen feeders. I have virtually no ground plants anymore for nectar and have never seen birds bathing in the pans of water I set out at different heights. I just hit thrift and dollar store today so I can follow your guidance in creating bubbles as you have. It's obvious the oxygen rich water created by the bubblers will provide what these creatures need so desperately. Last year I was daily making over a gallon of sugar food. I also had to divert the bees to specialize bee feeders on Macon jars. Then set them on bricks in containers of water to keep the ants at bay. I don't know how you keep up with the sugar water needs with so many feeders around. Perhaps a video of how you fill them all. I'm also wondering what region of SoCal you're in. I'm in San Diego county and I'm envious of your verdant yard. Your environment reminds me of Alpine or Julian. While prolonged heat these past summer has desolated mine with water cost so high and limited. Thank you again for sharing your innovations. 👏👍🙏❣️

My current 'composting in place' consists of throwing kitchen scraps, etc. in the same place in the backyard -- where it results in growing a bumper crop of miscellaneous!!! LOL! • I found a 3.5 watt solar pump works better in my yard. I still get one with a long cord but because I'm using trash cans to make mine so the water doesn't dry out so fast, this wattage gives my birdbath the perfect amount of water to get to the top of my tubing without spraying all over the place. I'm in Arkansas and dealing with 100+ degree days right now so I have to add water every couple of days now instead of daily.

  • I love your work for watering the hummers, that said no we don’t all have k cups - one because it adds so much trash to the dumps, oceans, rivers, etc. 2nd because the old coffee used in these is just awful and if you really know good coffee, you would know how rancid it is. The problem is those who aren’t wealthy to buy fresh flown over beans from someone in Hawaii which has to meet US regulations and not exposed to chemicals, etc. - but we have gotten use to bad coffee until we get a fresh high quality good fresh roasted, fresh ground coffee beans. But another huge reason to not use these is the cost is so expensive. Just get a drip coffee maker with a timer where you add in a spoonful of coffee to the paper filter or get a reusable one. But the thing is the coffee will be much fresher than the cups known to be sitting in warehouses for decades. And like tea, don’t over boil the water to where it’s ruined. Try to buy the containers of coffee in disposable foil packages and call the company when you buy it and based on the expiration codes, you can call the manufacturer and ask when it was ground and packaged. All that said… buy really good fresh coffee beans from a local coffee roaster company, and then grind the beans fresh each day or two. You will be shocked at the freshness and difference in flavor. Of course you have to find a coffee you like. Whichever you do, stay away from cups and the cheaper the worse. It’s like olive oil - Italy knkw they can sell us the oldest, worse olive oil. Top chefs know the best - and it’s not usually what the show on their shows because that’s sponsors. But Italy knows we don’t know the difference. In fact, finding and buying a brand from California (the current year’s harvest), you again will be like what the heck have I been using - terrible. But think of the harvests in Italy,coming over here on ships in barrels and sitting in warehouses until they get to bottling. But it’s exposed to heat, plastic whatever. Do you really think high quality oil or coffee can be purchased for a couple dollars - NO. It costs money to come across land and then onto ships and then across the ocean to some port and then on trucks to some warehouse. Just think about what it costs to fuel your car much less a huge ship.

  • I am so excited to assemble this!! I have everything but the skewers and k-cup. The visiting hummingbirds are up to 3 and there are around 8 brown creepers taking up residence in my potted plants (which are in the shade) in the heat of the day. 118 in Phoenix 🥵 Thanks for all your information - it’s such a treat to have cool fountains ⛲️ and snacks waiting for my daily visitors 🐦!!

  • Robbie! What about making 2 bird baths, maybe in 2 different structures with one solar fountain? With your creativity you could use the small 1/4" irrigation tubing, and your handy dandy soldering iron to attach it to two different structures somehow - I'm sure of it. I've got plenty of it now since your videos on the tubing in the garden. If I have time, I'll try my creativity on that. But you'll be ahead of the game, I know it!

  • Robbie, thank you for sharing this with us! I absolutely love it! I have everything to make this except for the kcup, but I have some tiny red plastic cups that I think will work. They are a mini solo cup and are about the same size as a kcup, but the top edge is just like the solo cups, which are different than a kcup. Do you think they would work? I sure hope so because I probably have 50 to 60 of them, and that would make a lot of bird baths 😂😂😂. I laugh watching the Oriole bird lol. ❤😊😊❤

    • I like the mini-solo cup idea. And it doesn't hurt that they are red! Probably sturdier than a k-cup, too. I would think a little bead of the hot glue, as in the demo, would beef up the rolled rim to a point the hummies could grip it better than if it was left more narrow. I might try this myself. Need to find a very small package of red mini solo cups! 😊👍

    • I was just going to say, the Dollar Store has them in the 1 Dollar isle in the store. I believe there's blue ones also and they're called bath cups on the packaging, couldn't be a more fitting name for what they'll be repourposed for.

  • Packs of mini plastic cups are not that expensive either. I believe the 50pk is $1 at the dollar store. And to accommodate the Orioles, perhaps use an 6 or 8oz size; if one is too flimsy, maybe double it 👍🏼

    @opalsirius8484@opalsirius84849 ай бұрын
    • Very true I saw the cups at dollar tree, I was just trying to go with something that could be free. But you are right those cups will work. You can’t go too big on the top. It will make it too top-heavy the way this is set up. Thanks 😊 ❤️

  • Can this idea work on the 2-liter bottle idea, using a K-Cup instead of a turkey baster? I'm kinda torn between the turkey baster idea and the K-Cup idea. I have a bunch of little mouthwash gargle cups to substitute for K-Cups. But I do have 2 or 3 solar fountains, I think I'll try both designs! 😁
