This weeks video is a project ive been asked to do by a good buddy of mine who is building a completely custom T25 Vw Camper and one of the things he wanted customized was his intake manifold while the engine is out being rebuilt, I will be doing the rocker cover in a similar style but i wont show that as ive already done a rocker cover and i wouldn't want to repeat videos.
First thing i done was to break out the tool kit crack the cap screws holding on the egr and intake connector they broke free waaay easier than i anticipated, ive had to heat EGR valves with blow torches in the past just to get them off but this one was ok. The internals of the manifold and egr were absolutely caked with unburnt diesel, oil and carbon!
To remove all of the carbon build up it was taken to the parts washer and given a extremely thorough soaking and scrubbing session and im pleased to say that 99% of all the deposits were removed so that a bonus and should help the finished engine build breathe a lot easier.
Once dried off i set about with the more serious task of prepping the manifold for its custom paint job the first job on that list was to attack the horrible casting marks with the angle grinder and a flap disc, once that was done all the hard to reach bits were done with a sanding drum on the Dremel.
Once suitably smooth and after George had been fed, the manifold was first etch primed then given a few coats of high build primer to raise the surface so that i could sand back to a perfectly smooth surface that was suitable for accepting my custom mixed base coat.
I applied a pure gold tinter as a base layer of colour for the stencil i would apply, while the gold was drying a i created the vintage VW logo and cut it out in vinyl using my plotter then applied it to the manifold where i thought it looked the best. Then came My own blend of purple, This colour is unique to me and i dont have a code only the formulation for the colour. Once several layers of the metallic purple were applied and dried i removed the stencil to expose the beautiful gold underneath. This was the sealed in with 5 coats of high gloss high durability lacquer/ clear.
While the clear was curing i set my sights on making the EGR and mounting hardware look better then new so off to the blaster with them it was, once blasted the surfaces were then polished up in the good old sketchy bench grinder ( a polished surface plates better than a dull one). The parts were then dipped in all the solutions required to perform the plating and then at the last step they were left in the yellow passivate for much longer than recommended so that i could achieve the dirty gold/bronze effect i was after and im glad to say it turned out fantastic!
Once all of those steps were completed the rebuild was just the reverse of the disassembly.
I hope you enjoyed this little project as much as i did. See you all soon in the next video.

VW Custom Manifold / Restoration
Hey Guys, As you have probably noticed already i have updated the channel name and logo. The channel is no longer Really Random Channel it is now RRC Restoration. Just incase you were wondering why the water marks in the video still say Really Random Channel. Enjoy.

What was the black spray can bottle you painted on the manifold 1st? Was it a primer?

this guy clearly is a neat person. the way he put back his tools after he used it, the way he clean the dust on the table before proceed to another step, and that leftovers from masking tape. that alone makes me appreciate you more sir, great job as always!
Exactly! This was the first thing that stood out, watching his videos. KUDOS
I could watch you restore engine parts all day. The end results are stunning and easy for anyone to replicate. Cheers!
Nice result ! If I can just allow myself a little advice, it would be to put a little grease on reassembly on the threads of each screw. This avoids these white deposits of alumina in the threads and also the risks of seizure and breakage during disassembly.
Thanks for just letting the natural sounds roll in. It’s so much better than music.
I really appreciate you sharing your work. Restoring a bike and your videos have been invaluable. Looking forward to going through your backlog of videos and seeing new ones. Thank you, sir!
I could just hear the conversation in the meetings now. Hi, my name is Avi, and this all started one cold December morning when KZhead recommended a Hand Tool Rescue video to watch. From there I was hooked!!! Next thing you know I'm watching My Mechanics, TysyTube, The Good of The Land and Really Random Channel. Now I watch 4-5 times a day and I don't see any end in sight. We love you Avi!!!
I don't think there is ANYTHING more satisfying than getting a rusty seized up bolt loose lol.
@hangtime 7190 uhmmm ok....🤔
That looks unbelievably good! Really inspired me to do it myself
The fork and knife when you vacuumed the excess 🤣
When your intake manifold is a piece of art..
Your videos are very satisfying to watch. Everything you rebuild is absolutely top notch. Your editing is great and I'm glad you decided not to talk in your videos. Thank you for speeding up the video when removing bolts and such. Nice job! 👍
Re: Sanding dust and paint; after 30 years in construction I have learned the more you breathe in, the less goes in your eyes.
Really nice job. Be careful using steel wire brush on aluminium. It can impregnate the aluminium with microscopic steel particles which will start to react with the aluminium over time. This will start corrosion eating away the aluminium under the paint surface.
Next restore - those bits and their poor blue box!! Then the bench grinder, it needs some love, too. LoL Love your work.
A great restoration as always. I'd love to see it on the engine with the customised rocker cover and whatever other trick bits your friend does with his camper. Cheers
I often listen to music while watching your videos and I've discovered that you can play essentially any music and your videos are still hold up, very entertaining and satisfying
I really love the zip tie holding the bench grinder down... and the old brake lines to hold the hardware in the bucket. really cool project that came out spectacular.
I know it is only restoration, buy I would love to see the parts in the engine bay once finished! Apart from that, love your videos!
Gotta stay more in tune with your uploads love watching these when they pop up on my recommended

Really loved this video and beautiful result in the end. I loved the way that you showed yourself clearing up after every step and putting your tools away each time. I cannot abide working in a messy environment. Top marks to you for the end result and also the journey to get there.
Thank you very much for your kind comment :)
Nothing but respect for your talents.
Thank you very much :)
Prince wants his intake back! He misses Purple Rain ☔️
Great job mate, I like the color - and yes the sketchy bench grinder, but at least you strapped it down! :D
Cant believe ive only just found your channel absolutely amazing great restoring of items love watching you great craftsmanship 👍
Dope asf. Would love to see that jewel box you put it in.
Great work. Beautiful. But you REALLY need to make that bench grinder. It's literally screaming for a makeover!
Totally agree the bench grinder would make an excellent project.
One day soon ;)
never restore the grinding wheel as a reminder to all of us or those who let equipment die, please never restore it. its a huge feature and hook...if you know what I mean! Let those who do not have anything in their garage that needs restoring....cast the first stone@@RRCRestoration
NO !!! leave Sketchy bench grinder alone ! it has a certain charm and appeal.
Sir! You are an ARTIST! Keep up the great job!
Gorgeous paint job! 👍🏻❤️😊
Superb job. That purple colour is stunning. I want to send you something so you can paint it that colour...………….like my plastic engine cover :-)
for some reason i’m now feeling the compelling need to buy a Volkswagen Transporter intake manifold
Rain noise is soothing, also rainy day is the best day for these jobs!
wonderful result! This purple is beautiful and this oxidized aluminum side makes it all very vintage. I just love it

Don't be sorry about the rain, it is Scotland after all, great job man, looks awesome.
I hope you make a “recap” video, to show us the new homes each of these pieces are installed too.
Whipped out my Dremel a while ago when working on my truck. My father called it a toy...at least until I solved the problem with it. His opinion is if it doesn't weigh at least 20 pounds, it's not a power tool.
Work smarter, not harder. 20lb power tools wear down the body faster. At 40, I'm pretty beat up and broken because I didn't care when I was in my 20's.
I used Header paint on my intake, manifold. Actually helps in keeping heat Out. Keeps charging air cool. Or VHT Wrinkle paint.
Very relaxing video to watch, and the rain was a nice addition.
Detecting ocd 😉 nice job!
George snorted that powder like a real G
Great result! Learned a trick from you with the masking tape, thanks!
Yours is the second time I've watched a restoration video while a thunderstorm raged in the background. Both are relaxing I believe.
Im glad you enjoyed it :)
Your purple looks like Midnight purple color but without the Rainbow effect. Looks cool.
I would love to know that code color
@@oraposo7863 LX0 or you can try LV4 or LP2
From the paint looks, it looks like midnight purple+some sort of blue (probably a dark one)
I had a 99 thistle purple Pearl 3/4 ton Ford. My obsession with purple started long before that though. Imagine how I felt when they told me they were putting me in for a Purple Heart 🤣🤣🤣.
MUITO TOP
Well I wish I had your skill and patience to do this kind of work! Well done it looks absolutely fantastic
Thank you :)
Looks awesome ! Great job ! Nice color ! 👍😊
Hmm. Sketchy bench grinder. Could use a quick restoration. Maybe ask Hand Tool Rescue? ;-) good to see the meticulous continues. "What have you got there?" "Several dozen large plastic containers." "Why did you buy those?" "I need them for chemicals and other forms of storage." "We have DOZENS of large plastic containers!" "Ja, this was true, however, as none of them were a perfect match, and without symmetry, the world is simple chaos, a miasma of ever changing madness, no human could understand such a hell, and we would all br driven insane, I destroyed them all. These large plastic containers, however, are identical in every respect."
Alternate universe. Where a Dremel is a "Draper" and a Henry is a "Geoge"
no need to apologize for the rain, it was actually really nice in the background. that color is gorgeous and works really well with the sparkling gold!

That purple is amazing. Just curious, how does it all hold up to heat? Great work.

Excelente toque especial del amigo Georges!
Brilliant work mate! Super tidy and organized shop. Let’s see more of George! 😂
fantastic work make. that color makes me want to eat it.
Thank you, Glad you like it :)
I'm a bit ignorant, Why you didn't sandblast the whole manifold instead?
Because it needed some wire brush work to remove the casting marks everywhere so it would have been an additional unnecessary step
@@1conu593en so if he wanted to wire brush casting marks that’s one thing … sand blasting the rest would have been a much faster method and most importantly a cleaner finish !!! And personally I would have powder coated it but that’s what I do for a living so there’s that .
A stunningly beautiful transformation 👍😲
as always...you have done an amazing job. great to watch.
External port n' polish.. This will give your engine 50hp more.😁😁😁
Nice job, would love one like that on my VW. Got to ask, "when will we see the TL125 finished"?

Hi RRC my brother is a painter so I understand the work that geos into painting, you have such a broad knowledge of so many things and so many bits of kit, the work you turnout is amazing, can't wait for the Honda to make a return !! that manifold I guess was of a diesel or a poorly running petrol after that de-coke it should be a lot more responsive on the pedal, ATB Wayne.

The sandpaper to outline with tape is genius!
A collector would happily have that on their shelf. Beautiful work.
Tbh Ill be a little sad when i have to give it back to its owner it looks so good sitting here on the shelf.
Wonder how well the diaphragm in the EGR held up to that process
Good question ;) , It survived no problem as i tested it before rebuilding it. Although it may be made a redundant system when building the engine as my friend may decide to blank it off to stop the carbon from building up again and to improve throttle response.
@@RRCRestoration your friend has a good idea. Never been a fan of EGR systems
Really Random Channel it looked so nice afterwards he should have just left it on 😂
@@miatafan you don't have to remove it just replace the gasket with a solid plate and it's blocked off but looks stock.

Sorry for my ignorance but shouldn't that paint be high temperature resistant, wouldn't it burn or come off? Please answer, it looks amazing and I would love to do that to my car 🙏🏼😅
Hi, The paint wont be damaged as there is no real heat in an intake manifold. Its the exhaust manifold that runs hot ;)
@@RRCRestoration Can you use on Exhaust Paint 500 F (it says on it Engine Paint)? Thank you.
Another great restoration video. Very satisfying. And no, you can't apologize for the rain😂

Great job would love to see it on the engine.
Looks good, but why didn't you sand blast it, and port and polish the inside, God bless amen.
Hi, If i had the cylinder head at the same time as the manifold i would have matched the ports but porting without matching it to the cylinder head does more harm than good.
I thought the same but yeah i guess makes sense if thts the case
