Hand down, Tony Leung did an awesome job playing Wenwu, built up the whole storyline. A warm-hearted kick-ass villain dad.
Still not the worst dad in MCU that title belong to Odin
He's clearly just a dad who's more into being his wife's husband than his kids' dad lol
Not a great Mandarin though.

You can also see the difference in the ring's energy when they're playing tug of war. Shang Chi's energy is more flowing, channeled and connected, where his father's is rigid, and sporadic.
yeah his father uses brute strength and the rings are not aligned perfectly and tilted in every direction. while shang chi's style is ta lo's style which uses smooth and fluid fighting style and the rings are perfectly aligned and moving smooth and gracefully.
you also see that in the fight between the Father and Mother. mom is all redirection and negation while the dad is all offense. it isn’t until Wenwu stops fighting aggressively when the mom gets some offensive kicks in. Really cool back and forth
I thought it signified yin (cool) and yang (warm) and how the father and son are opposing forces struggling against one another.

The dedication of choreography in this film made the movie for me! the fact that the actors themselves learned how to fight just for the movie shows the hard work they put into it!!

The martial arts styles of Shang Chi's father reminded me of the Earthbending style in ATLA, whereas his mother's style reminded me heavily of the Airbending style. Loved this movie so much
Yes it is very much like Bolin’s style from Korra. I mean theres an episode when korra and the squad are bending for sport and bolin starts bending discs it looks very similar
But you know all ATLA style are mostly based on Chinese martial arts, right?
@@lentostinato yea but theres thousands of forms nothings going to look exactly the same. They look similar but still all fall under chinese martial arts
I believe Earthbending was based on Hung Gar, while Airbending was based on Baguazhang.
@@Boomstickwaffles Yea, but my point is people need to STOP thinking those references are from anime (except the last scene where Shang Chi is destroying the dweller in darkness might be a homage to DBZ). Most of those anime (even Pokemon) are heavily influenced by Chinese martial art and mythologies.
I liked the small detail where at the end when they released the lanterns, the great protector was swimming around them and proceeded to outline the yin yang symbol
Woah! I didn't catch that on either watch yet, will look for it next time!
Ya I really liked that detail as well, it was cool
Ying and Yang is also perfectly balanced, like this hole thing should be
I caught that one and was wondering if it was intentional or not
Interesting details I noticed: -The dweller of darkness glows purple and grows stronger by consuming souls, which seems oddly similar to the black panther purple plants that that came on the vibranium comet, since their culture is so based in death and the afterlife and the plants make the people stronger when they eat them -The waterfall portal to the village was literally the water version of the fire portals the sorcerers use, which makes me see the village as essentially nature based implementations of the same core magic system in the MCU. Which makes me think the 10 rings function as some kinda conduit to various magic types, similar to thors hammer being a conduit to the odin force. The rings turned gold in the final attack, which I'm pretty sure is cosmic attacks.
I'm surprised no details was mentioned about the water portal. It's oddly too similar to the fiery portal ring.
Kinda thought ancient one was the ancestor of those villagers

Tony Leung's subtle acting is amazing. I could actually see the air of tiredness and the deep sadness in his eyes. He tried to behave normal but you can see the aura of total disregard for life and everything else around him, except for the love of his wife. His presence is what made this movie works. Amazing!
I love how they didn’t give back everyone’s souls after killing the dragon
For some reason that surprised me but I agree
@@moldyzucchinis3251 yeah i was hoping that after killing the soul monster weng woo will be alive but............. nevermind

for once, I actually was hoping they got their souls back just so Death Dealer could get a line with Shang Chi. but it wouldn't have added to the movie I guess.
Regarding Jackie Chan and the fight choreography - Shang says “I don’t want any trouble” right before they start fighting on the bus, which is a staple of Jackie’s characters in his films!

I just want people to know that I cried in the movie theatre as a grown ass adult and proud Asian American to see people who look like me in the MCU and in such an amazing movie. This will probably always and forever be my favorite MCU masterpiece. Asian representation is so important and I wish this movie had existed when I was a kid.

This and Black Panther were both amazing movies (referencing a comment below). Hopefully the powers that be will realize a good movie is a good movie, represent everyone, there are enough story lines and great characters out there of all shapes sizes colors and backgrounds (especially from comics). Shang actually learned the moves from his mother when he was young. He just never realized it until his Aunt showed him briefly while sparring and then during the fight when he flashbacked to when his mother was moving him through the moves. Kind of like Karate Kid. All that "Work" he did was training him.
The soundtrack of this movie was incredible!
By changing his fighting style from closed fist to open hand, our protagonist Shang-Chi is quite literally learning to LET GO. Let go of his past, his grief, his anger.
I also took it as him accepting his actions and his mother’s death. Instead of fighting with a closed fist with just the intent to kill he sees you can be powerful and strong without evil.
And as wenwu died, he opened his hands to give shang chi the rings, literally letting go in more ways than one
Yo also right before the fight he says, “I don’t want no trouble.” Which is SUCH a Jackie Chan nod.
He didn’t say “I don’t want no trouble” I don’t want no trouble means he wants trouble
When’s Jackie Chan coming to the mcu
Y E S
Wenwu wearing sandals in most of the scenes - 100% accurate 😂
Imagine he using the 10 sandals instead of the rings. Instant loss for shang chi no matter how much power he had
The 10 rings/bracelets could be linked to the 10 Eternals. Also: the scaffolding fight may also be a nod to Jackie Chan and his scaffolding figth in Rush Hour 2 :)
The scaffolding scene is just like the use of his jacket and bus is , some of the stunt/ choreography crew have worked with Jackie
One thing I was hoping he would mention was when they drove RazorFists car through the waterfall the portal that opens into TaLo is a water version of the sling ring portals. Cool to see that magic follows certain principles throughout the MCU!

I noticed that too, and now wondering if that implies all the elementals have a version of this 🤔 lol

Me too! I was so intrigued when that scene came up
The ten rings, being thousands of years old, could be relics from the time the Eternals came to earth to battle the deviants. The bad dragon swallowing souls could be an ally of the deviants and the rings started the beacon to alert the Eternals that the deviants are back.
Brilliant! I hope you’re right 🤞🏾
I did get the feeling the big bad dragon in the cave had some deviant relation
Well we will find out in 2 months
Wasn't it stated the rings came from a different dimension? which means it wouldn't have been in the world the Eternals were inhabiting

It was literally the best mcu film for me, the lore around the movie made it very interesting, the videography, the plot, the way they just tone down on avengers or other marvel character reference really help establish the movie on its own rather than just a movie that is part of the mcu...the father and son conflict was executed very well and most of all the fight scenes were great.

I loved when he was relieved that the magical creature friend can be seen by others. 😂
yaaaa. i knew that was coming. hahaha
Great movie,. good review. Looking for more from Shang Chi. Since I have practiced both Tai Chi Chuan and Ba Gua Chang, I can verify that the style you are calling Tai Chi Chuan (Principle of Yin/Yang Fist) is actually Ba Gua Chang (8 directions/principles Palm). The circling step is the basis of Ba Gua. There is only one circling step in the long tai chi form (leading into the Lotus Kick). The most common tactic of Tai chi is half-step yield, small pivot with spiral parry, and spring forward to uproot or flow through any opening. There is some overlap but they are distinct. Just saying.
Now that I think about the title “multiverse of madness”, emphasis on the madness part, madness is often associated with cosmic horror stuff and love craft so I wouldn’t doubt there’s gonna be so sort of Cthulhu monster as a main antagonist. Would be a great movie if done correctly, especially if it’s actually a “horror” movie as they’ve described.

You got that from Comic Drake didn't you
Maybe things would have played out different if Brandon would have been Shang Chi instead of The Crow🤔
This was a well shot and has a great pace. The acting was phenomenal
I’m amazed at your attention to detail……SUBSCRIBED.
"Morris" and the other creatures are actual ancient Chinese mythological creatures. Dijiang (morris), Longma (dragon horse) and the 9-tailed fox spirit (also appears in Naruto). Marvel really did their fricking homework! I'm impressed.
Kitsune are Japanese
@@jacobnewcombe5367 9 tailed fox spirits are present in Chinese mythology, they are not an exclusively Japanese thing. In fact, kitsune as we know it were likely heavily influenced by the Chinese portrayals of fox spirits.
@@alexanderliu2227 damn Japan really took everything from the Chinese lol. Sorry for me speaking without the knowledge.
i've seen the horse-like animal be referenced as qilin and not longma; i'm not too familiar with either but the qilin are another chinese mythological creature that look quite similar!
@@nebullae I'm pretty sure those are qilins in Shang Chi; they had a horn on their heads I think? Which is a defining feature of the qilin. The longma is supposed to have wings, which I don't remember seeing in the movie.
Considering how old the Mandarin is, it would be cool to see him in the Eternals when they do flashbacks through history
yesss
Yes.
That would be a good idea!
Yea! In the background. Conquering
He stated he reached every corner of Earth yet he didn't conquer Earth. What if the rings are linked to the Eternals.
I love the analysis. I am a collector with about a $10,000 comic collection. The original MOKF comic book is one of my favorite and most prized series, and i probably have 3/4 of them. While I'm not as up-to-date on the current shang-chi, the one thing I find interesting in the MCU analysis by most KZheadrs: no one seems to notice or mention that the beacon sent by the ten rings is in the shape of the Yin and Yang. This was the symbol worn on the back of the tunic of shang-chi throughout the comic book. It is an oriental symbol of balance involving opposites such as good and evil, dark and light, male and female, et cetera. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts. I'm also curious as to what this might mean for the more celestial next phase of the MCU
Watched it on dosney plus tonight. Really enjoyed it. The aesthetic scenery, the fight scenes and a story of tragedy with shang chis father just a good all rounder for me
Are we not gonna even talk about how Yuen Wah was IN Kung Fu Hustle??? He was the literal TAI CHI MASTER.
Yeah guan bo who taught Katy to shoot bows
This movie shows that Marvel can do different genres and the fans will love it as long as it's done right
What I really want from marvel is this, different genres, thriller, horror, R rated, rom com etc its cinematic universe right so multiple genres one world
@@hareendrangangadharan6974 deadpool 3 rumored rated r Strange 2 rumored to have horror in it
Marvel has done a lot of different genres at this point. Spy thriller, heist, urban fantasy, afrofuturism, romance, sitcom… The MCU is a setting, not a genre. There’s a lot of room for Marvel Studios to play around and try their hand at different genres within the MCU. I want a slice of life movie about a family who half survives the blip. Like two parents, two kids, but then it’s the story of how one parent and one kid get snapped. I think that if it’s done well it could be a really emotional and heartwarming watch, and it could expand the MCU world building.
@@hareendrangangadharan6974 oo yes that would be awesome! That's why I loved Wandavision, because they did the sitcom genre with a bit of horror elements and it was awesome.
@@tobistein6639 but why would MCU do a non-superpower people story. Maybe a short film, and that's a stretch.
Thanks for the in depth analysis!
That scene where they’re fighting the soldiers after the cage match and Katy was hanging from that bamboo reminded me so much from that scene in rush hour 2
This film had me hooked with the very first father son battle of the MCU . I also enjoy that Shang-Chi is is not just a good martial artist anymore, he now has powers, and that's perfect
Wasn't Starlord-Ego a father son battle?
@@alexorellana3602 Human V Human father son battle
Never clicked so fast. This is one of the MCU’s finest.
Agreed
Def, up there with Ragnarok.
@@shumayelkhan8154 I said exactly the same to my mate. This n Ragnarok are two of the best solo films

The fights really did reminded me of Jackie Chans classics
I was holding back tears the entire film. It almost felt like I've lived their lives, or at least seen their lives, in another life, which is probably why this film resonated so deeply with me
WENWU is the BEST Supervillian of all time! Sad he died! The rings are amazing and captured beautifully on screen!
TL;DR: Simu Liu learns Airbending to fight daddy issues.
It was a very enjoyable movie. However I had to come here right after watching it to learn the backstory from the comics and see what I did not pick up on what I didn't know. Always great to have to make these vids Erik. Thanks.
The fighting sequences really amaze me. It brings memories of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. Full combat mode 🔥
