Arizona State student-athlete Leon Marchand won the 500 free title at the 2024 NCAA Swimming Championships with an NCAA record time of 4:02.31 on March 28, 2024. Marchand's time of 4:02.31 broke his own record by 3.87 seconds.

I can only hope he has not peaked too soon before the Paris games. Never did I think Phelps would be surpassed but this guy is on his way with the times he delivers. Good luck Mr Marchand, you are swimming in a field of one.

@@ferencorosz9753 that didnt prevent him to smash the 400m IM record at the worlds last year,. and the current 400m freestyle is "only" 3m40, so he definitely will get in sooner than later (not sure if he's running it this summer in Paris tho)

It's crazy that he broke his own record by 4 seconds and went out as fast as he did and survived the pianos. I would love to see what Marchand could go in a 400m free LCM, given that he hasn't swam the event long course in a long time. It could be something great, but not likely to approach the world and textile best times of 3:40.07 (Biedermann *supersuit) and 3:40.08 (Thorpe textile real world record). This is possibly due to over reliance on his underwaters as opposed to above water swimming in freestyle? His listed pb is "only" a 4:04.65, which is slower than his 400m IM LCM world record of 4:02.50. Clearly, he's way faster than that, especially with a 1:46.44 (1:44.89 relay split) in the 200m free LCM, and the world record in the 400m IM LCM (along with his yards times in freestyle).

Can we just stop and contemplate on his 400m SPLIT being 3:12.30, which is TWENTY SECONDS faster than the World Record for the 400m itself?
This is yards, so it is less distance with more underwaters, thus being faster. So no suprise there.
400 Short Course Yards equals 365.76 meters.

le passage au 400 mètres c'est très exactement à cet instant 3:36 - (le milieu de la 18ème longueur (22.86x17.5 = 400.50M) Il passe donc en un peu moins de 3.30 au 400M - En bassin de 25 mètres le record du monde ( de Yannick Agnel) est de 3.32,25

Marchand is argueably the best swimmer in history (based on performance, not consistency through the years, he's a kid). But a small yard pool is a bad indicator to predict possible times in Paris Olimpics. He is the best diver in history by far he is diving half pool all the time.
Legend says that Mbappé, Wembanyama and Marchand landed on earth in the same vessel…. Too bad the spacecraft landed in France

Leon really stole what would have been a super tight race from us. Honestly I would have rather fully focused on hobson and magahey duking it out till the end than watch frog boy go halfway on every turn. Don't get me wrong it's really impressive. But to me he is completely ruining yards swimming.
