Col. (ret.) Lawrence Wilkerson's last positions in government were as Secretary of State Colin Powell's Chief of Staff (2002-05), Associate Director of the State Department's Policy Planning staff under the directorship of Ambassador Richard N. Haass, and member of that staff responsible for East Asia and the Pacific, political-military and legislative affairs (2001-02).
-
Before serving at the State Department, Wilkerson served 31 years in the U.S. Army. During that time, he was a member of the faculty of the U.S. Naval War College (1987 to 1989), Special Assistant to General Powell when he was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989-93), and Director and Deputy Director of the U.S. Marine Corps War College at Quantico, Virginia (1993-97). Wilkerson retired in 1997 and began work as an advisor to General Powell. He has also taught national security affairs at the George Washington University.

IF American citizens cannot realize we have created an elite class that lives off the taxpayer and insider trading. ALL politicians have inside information they all get rich. This is a huge problem EDIT That does not mean I don't agree with him, I do agree with him, especially on Israel, but if you look at the other 80 year olds in government he is a minority. I wonder why the Col. never mentions the lobby has bought and paid for these politicians

They are protesting on pure moral grounds - unselfish, putting their entire futures at risk, getting their heads bashed, getting expelled, getting banned, getting police records, getting every kind of threat thrown at them and STILL they are out there protesting U.S. support of genocide! They are amazing. I'm nearly as old as Wilkerson. I was part of those '60s protests. I have felt recently that America's soul was dead, slaughtered by Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld and their successors. Not so! These students - who have so much to lose, and no Draft to fear (currently) - are saving our soul as a country. Bless them!

W. got a bit emotional and lashed out, using Biden's and others' decrepitude. Understandable - but it isn't really their age that's the problem.

The very moment the US vetoed a cease fire in gaza, all countries who voted for a cease were erased.. the USAs stance on freedom democracy for the whole of humanity is a great lie. They are literally funding and supplying weapons to kill innocent people. Just like Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, and many more.. in 23 Years America has invaded 9 Middle Eastern countries and killed 11 million people.. Currently, the establishment is responding in much the same way. • I was a young Okla. mother of two children who were born in '67 and '69. This allowed my first husband who was just finishing his degree in Engineering, to avoid the draft. My brother went to Calif. and tried to ruin his health enough to avoid the draft when he got a low number in the "draft raffle." Another friend moved to Canada. My second and future husband had gotten a psychiatrist to judge him "unstable." At his physical, in the end, he was judged not military material thank God. He ended up a great partner and father which may say something about the kinds of men that are judged to be great soldier material. At the time, I judged my government to be wrong to fight a war that ruined the lives of the Vietnamese people in a small country half way across across the world. Later, I got to know a group of these people who fled to our country. I worked with them for ten years. We were all metal craft workers in the same medium sized family owned company. That war made no sense to me. I have never trusted my government, or any government since then. I have however trusted and valued Col. Wilkerson's opinion and insight for several years now. Thanks so much for this Dialogue!

    • I have the same problem looking at these college protests with such rose colored glasses. The protesters and hippies quickly became yuppies and embraced neoliberalism just as that generation did overall regardless of being a blue or red party follower, and despite some particular differences over the years, had the same foreign policy ideas. This generation of college age students are Baby Boomers 2.0 and are falling for a lot of the same self-aggrandizing narrative that the Boomers did; they are special and different (read "better") than what came before them. And because they are a large, young consumer block (without a sizable anti-consumerism block in consciousness as well as just in lip service) they are pandered to left and right - nothing easier than telling a young person what they want to hear, especially if it strokes their egos. I feel like my life will be lived within two groups of Baby Boomers and this new group is more selfish and self-centered overall. They were never around the people who lived through the Great Depression or WWII to provide some counter-narrative and worldview.

    • "...it had no lasting effect...". Actually, it did. In the Neo-Con 'bible,' "The Project for a New American Century," you will see the warmongers' plan written out: Goal? To end "the Vietnam Syndrome" (Americans' hatred of war). How? "We will need a new Pearl Harbor." Not kidding. We are now living out that 'Project." Back in late 2002/early 2003 - just before the Neo-Cons invasion of Iraq - I found an aggregate opinion poll on the back pages of the NYT in which FIFTY-FOUR PERCENT of Americans opposed the invasion of Iraq. THAT is what the Neo-Cons had to overcome: 54% of Americans remembered Vietnam.

We have institutionalized opposition at best, not representation at all.

    • Libertarians insist that "taxation is theft", but I would argue that rentier income, by definition deriving from ownership alone (a not at all productive extraction from the real economy of producing and consuming goods and services), is theft, and this is what should be taxed. "Rentiers derive income from ownership, possession or control of assets that are scarce or artificially made scarce. Most familiar is rental income from land, property, mineral exploitation or financial investments, but other sources have grown too. They include the income lenders gain from debt interest; income from ownership of ‘intellectual property’ (such as patents, copyright, brands and trademarks); capital gains on investments; ‘above normal’ company profits (when a firm has a dominant market position that allows it to charge high prices or dictate terms); income from government subsidies; and income of financial and other intermediaries derived from third-party transactions." Standing, Guy. The Corruption of Capitalism: Why rentiers thrive and work does not pay (p. 94).

But the problem is the political structure where all politicians are dependent on funding to pay for their campaigns. The new younger breed of politicians will still be beholden to the same donor class. That is the problem that urgently needs to be fixed. And the politicians who have been complicit in crimes must be held accountable. The concept that politicians are subject to laws must be shown to be a reality.
