Love & marriage in Egypt and Taiwan - Whose choice is it? | Us & Them | DW Documentary
Getting married, starting a family, children - topics that often trigger heated discussions. While parents often vouch for traditional values and security, young people have their own ideas. Young people like Yoyo in Taiwan and Esraa in Egypt.
Yoyo lives with her parents in Taipei. She’s 30 years old; her mother already had two children at that age. Her announcement that she plans to marry a woman comes as a shock to her parents. Same-sex marriages were only legalized in Taiwan in 2019. Although the country is one of the most liberal in Asia, Yoyo’s parents fear she’ll be marginalized and suffer discrimination. And: Yoyo wants to have children.
It's a largely similar picture in Esraa’s home city Cairo. She’s also in her early thirties and lives with her parents. The big difference here is that Esraa has already started a family. But her marriage has failed - like so many young marriages in Egypt. The nation has one of the highest divorce rates in the world. But Esraa’s parents believe marriage should last forever. They’re torn - they don’t understand their daughter, but they also don’t want to cut her off. How can they support Esraa and their little granddaughter? Should she stand on her own two feet - or re-marry as soon as possible?
In many parts of the world, parents often get involved in their adult children’s family planning. Sometimes, this well-meaning support becomes a burden and ends up creating huge pressure. But even still, grandparents are important too.

This is a very nice and touchable documentary. What really matters in love relationship is to be honest with ourselves, to our partners and the beloved ones who takep part in our lives.
Best of luck to all of them! ❤
I love how Esra’s parents are still accepting of this in spite of the less loving society they grew up in - her father became depressed because he didn’t think she could be happy this way, not because he was worried about how others would see him. As a family, they’ll all end up alright ❤
Thank you alot 😊
Seriously, this is an issue i have with my parents as of now;i ain't interested in marriage but they can't accept how i really feel and that's an issue....
Day by day I start to realize that the world is full of beautiful people, I love you all, and God bless you and your loved ones. Andrei from Romania .
Except for "god".... but thanks for your concerns ❤
Why do parents think they failed if their kids come out? I would be happy that they even told me.
You will understand when you become parent yourself
@@demoncloud6147do you have an answer?
its about grandkids or social pressure. prety sure you always love ur kid.@@PeterPerez.
A high divorce rate isn’t a bad thing! People shouldn’t stay in unhappy marriages!
I love you DW❤
There's no perfect marriage ...as long your child is happy in her choice lets support them...
Esraa is so pretty, and her daughter is so cute.❤❤
Really great families❤
Please make a documentary about mixed marriages between couple from different races, nationalities, cultures and faiths and how much the internet and dating applications have eased and increased such marriages.

great documentaries by DW of late. Vielen Dank für Ihren Bericht.
Thank you for watching!
the families shown are good people.
Financial and spiritual independence goes hand in hand. If you're truly independent, married or single, you know what's you want in your life. The fact is most of the people don't. They rely and entrust in others.
Acceptance. Acceptance. Acceptance.
Wishing you all the success in life.
DW you deleted a documentary on Israel from your channel. (Story of a contested country). Can you explain why?
Unfortunately, the online rights for that documentary have now expired. Thanks for watching!
Marriage is like a puppet show orchestrated by a traditional parental ring fence on one hand & a shape shifting modernist digital platforms influence (no prizes for guessing which ones 😏😒) on the other. Anyways Love, Respect, Compromise and sometimes tremendous Sacrifice for each other plays a huge role in making things work 🎉
Another wonderful documentary was shared by a respectful 🙏 ( DW) channel. Documentary about love and marriage in two different societies. Marriage is economy-social, agreed between two individuals, which is the reality side . Family problems are changing due to differences of generations' economy - social circumstances. Thank you for your respectful 🙏 ( DW) documentary channel
nice video!
Thanks for watching!
Marriage was never about love in the first place - it's a legal contract enforced by the government. Breaking it would mean legal ramifications. Not lovely at all.
I understand your pov, and it's a view influenced by what marriage has become nowadays. From a biblical pov, marriage was supposed to be a union between a man and a woman that would have the aim to glorify God. Learning from each other, growing together, going through hardships together, yet remaining faithful to each other. The world has turned it into a business: you need money to start a marriage, and then you need more money to end it.
That's Definitely the case, in(MISSogynistic-I>Slam)
That is true; it’s also a sort of a safety net if you have kids or shared property. I am all for marriage tbh but it was never forced on my generation so probably that is the reason:)
I'd go further than that and say that marriage was originally all about buying and selling women like property. Legal marriage should be abolished like the archaic practice that it is (private marriage that isn't legally binding is fine of course).
@@StephanosBlack No-one's stopping u, from marrying a man .
Young people have all the rights for their best choices, because as independent adults, they're making their own lives! Thank you for bridging the 2 countries with more understanding 🙏🏻🙏🏻
man is egypt really like that ? i visited 20 years ago and it felt way more conservative, heads covered barely any women in the Streat.
20 years ago is a lot of time.
I still find it weird seeing these people without masks :D :D
they should be incentivized to adopt
Agree, unfortunately while same sex marriage is legalized in Taiwan , same sex couples cannot legally adopt. Yet.
❤
The narration during this video is not helpful at all because it is so biased and filled with lies of ommision. It is biased because it fails to consider that some conflicts in marriage end in death. Some conflicts end in death because some families are headed with one person who has only a gang/slave owner's mentality. Then if anyone in that crook's family complains to authorities instead of those authorities helping all people who are being affected by crime and violence all they offer is both platitutes and threats after those crime victims have both started seeking help while doing their duty to warn too. Then on top of it all if the only truly responsible parent obtains an anullment from the Roman Catholic church sometimes that is all the 'provoking' some people use as excuse to start a civil war. Like after a Mrs. Twitchel started discovering that her husband the movie director was instead a serial killer here in Edmonton, Alberta Canada.
Wtf, can anyone explain me who is the bride at the end of the video ??
They are both brides.
The Korean women. The Eygtian woman was attending a wedding as a guest.

When Islam ends from the world, peace will return to this world. Pray to Jesus Christ 🙏
Christianity is no better, cause any country driven by a religious doctrine is doomed to injustice and conflicts. All countries should be secular with the same rights for all, independents of religion, gender or sexual orientation. Then there will be peace
Than you can wait a long time for jesus, he wont come because he is dead...
pretty sure wars started before the existence of islam and the most deadly wars so far happened between christian countries but you do you boo
Obvious fake account with a religious twist, lol
A troll has come to preach.
It is written in the Quran that there should be 4 wife🧕& 40 children 👻 before marriage, only then Allah will be Happy and Bless. "Inshallah"
