Love & marriage in Egypt and Taiwan - Whose choice is it? | Us & Them | DW Documentary

Getting married, starting a family, children - topics that often trigger heated discussions. While parents often vouch for traditional values and security, young people have their own ideas. Young people like Yoyo in Taiwan and Esraa in Egypt.
Yoyo lives with her parents in Taipei. She’s 30 years old; her mother already had two children at that age. Her announcement that she plans to marry a woman comes as a shock to her parents. Same-sex marriages were only legalized in Taiwan in 2019. Although the country is one of the most liberal in Asia, Yoyo’s parents fear she’ll be marginalized and suffer discrimination. And: Yoyo wants to have children.
It's a largely similar picture in Esraa’s home city Cairo. She’s also in her early thirties and lives with her parents. The big difference here is that Esraa has already started a family. But her marriage has failed - like so many young marriages in Egypt. The nation has one of the highest divorce rates in the world. But Esraa’s parents believe marriage should last forever. They’re torn - they don’t understand their daughter, but they also don’t want to cut her off. How can they support Esraa and their little granddaughter? Should she stand on her own two feet - or re-marry as soon as possible?
In many parts of the world, parents often get involved in their adult children’s family planning. Sometimes, this well-meaning support becomes a burden and ends up creating huge pressure. But even still, grandparents are important too.

  • I love how Esra’s parents are still accepting of this in spite of the less loving society they grew up in - her father became depressed because he didn’t think she could be happy this way, not because he was worried about how others would see him. As a family, they’ll all end up alright ❤

  • Marriage is like a puppet show orchestrated by a traditional parental ring fence on one hand & a shape shifting modernist digital platforms influence (no prizes for guessing which ones 😏😒) on the other. Anyways Love, Respect, Compromise and sometimes tremendous Sacrifice for each other plays a huge role in making things work 🎉

  • Another wonderful documentary was shared by a respectful 🙏 ( DW) channel. Documentary about love and marriage in two different societies. Marriage is economy-social, agreed between two individuals, which is the reality side . Family problems are changing due to differences of generations' economy - social circumstances. • Marriage was never about love in the first place - it's a legal contract enforced by the government. Breaking it would mean legal ramifications. Not lovely at all.

    @extremepsyche3135@extremepsyche31356 ай бұрын
    • I understand your pov, and it's a view influenced by what marriage has become nowadays. From a biblical pov, marriage was supposed to be a union between a man and a woman that would have the aim to glorify God. Learning from each other, growing together, going through hardships together, yet remaining faithful to each other. The world has turned it into a business: you need money to start a marriage, and then you need more money to end it.

    • That is true; it’s also a sort of a safety net if you have kids or shared property. I am all for marriage tbh but it was never forced on my generation so probably that is the reason:)

      @marija8749@marija87496 ай бұрын
    • I'd go further than that and say that marriage was originally all about buying and selling women like property. Legal marriage should be abolished like the archaic practice that it is (private marriage that isn't legally binding is fine of course).

  • The narration during this video is not helpful at all because it is so biased and filled with lies of ommision. It is biased because it fails to consider that some conflicts in marriage end in death. Some conflicts end in death because some families are headed with one person who has only a gang/slave owner's mentality. Then if anyone in that crook's family complains to authorities instead of those authorities helping all people who are being affected by crime and violence all they offer is both platitutes and threats after those crime victims have both started seeking help while doing their duty to warn too. Then on top of it all if the only truly responsible parent obtains an anullment from the Roman Catholic church sometimes that is all the 'provoking' some people use as excuse to start a civil war. Like after a Mrs. Twitchel started discovering that her husband the movie director was instead a serial killer here in Edmonton, Alberta Canada.
