The 12-Year-Old Dropout Who Led to Inventing SPAM from Unwanted Pork Meat

2022 ж. 20 Там.
2 016 850 Рет қаралды

During desperate times when civilians in many countries were near starvation, cans of SPAM were a priceless godsend that saved millions of people. Their convenience, durability, and high-calorie content made it ideal for feeding American soldiers during the Second World War.
No one could predict how people across the world would fall in love with Spam. Over eight billion cans have been sold in 44 countries since their creation.
What many didn't realize is that they were eating the most unwanted cut of meat. How did the cheapest, most unprofitable meat turn into an iconic American meal?
This is the story of how SPAM was made.

  • When I was 7, my Dad worked up on the lumber camp all winter and my Mom was working but was quite ill. This lead to me making my first meal, which I had waiting for my Mom and sister when she came home. Mashed potatoes, home canned peas and SPAM - baked in the oven with a diamond pattern cut into it, basted with honey and festooned with cloves. Thus began my culinary career - now in its 6th decade...

  • When my husband and I were newlyweds and pretty poor, we couldn't afford to buy ham for Christmas, so I bought Spam and put a pineapple sauce with it. (Just put a can of crushed pineapple into a blender and pulse it to applesauce consistency.) We always think back to that time and how we didn't feel deprived to enjoy that Christmas Spam. Being happy and grateful is a choice we can make.

American soldiers surrounded at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge are running desperately low on supplies, especially ammunition and food. Just when things are looking most grim and desperate, the skies clear and American transport planes are overhead dropping supplies by parachute. As the bundles land, the American soldiers eagerly descend upon them like kids opening presents on Christmas morning. One bundle is found to be filled with K rations. "All dinners", one soldier grumbles. Another soldier hastily opens a bundle and spills it's contents onto the ground. It's nothing but cans of SPAM. No one says anything. There's a silent pause as the soldiers all share knowing looks of despair, disgust and disappointment. When this movie came out just four years after the end of WW2, I can imagine countless veterans sitting in theaters all groaning in sympathy with their on screen portrayers.

  • I haven't bought groceries from stores for a few years since I've been forced by city bylaw and police to lose all my jobs and income! I garbage pick and collect bottles and cans to pay for food to feed my cat. I also find a lot of thrown out canned foods including SPAM! It's not my favorite meat. But I have mixed a few basic seasonings and a bit of sugar in it, made it like a stir fry with pasta or rice and it doesn't taste like anything out of a can! Over time, I have grown to enjoy SPAM whenever I get the opportunity to cook it. I've never ever bought a can of SPAM from any store shelf or cashier checkout! And yes, this stuff is a life saver!

  • I'm a retired Army Mess Sergeant. During field training, we were issued "luncheon meat," (Spam,) in 5 lb tins. The German locals working on base coveted it. Odd, since I considered local meat products suppior to American fare.

  • Love Spam! I grew up eating it. I remember the cans had to be opened using a small key attached to each can. My Dad used to save some of those keys for some reason. Now cans have pull tops.

    • He probably saved back some keys because there were times when you'd get your groceries home and some can would be missing it's key. I remember having a can of something and the key was missing-- got knocked off during handling possibly.
