    • @@beccymay701 I finally got to see the remade Dune last night. Honestly, if you compare the movies side by side. Its exactly the same, although the Visuals are spectacular than the 84' version. Honestly, there is 2 versions of the 84' version. The actual movie release which is about 2 1/2 hours long then the 3 1/2 hour long version (studio released) which explains everything better. It most likely the reason David Lynch the director of the 84' version to be taken off as director of the movie. But I agree, the visuals make the movie. And from what David Lynch said, making a movie from the greatest Sci-Fi book of all time, it was extremely tough.

  • David Lynch refers to the concept of the 'Eye of the Duck' with film making. Essentially, if you paint the duck's eye to be believable than the rest just takes form around it. It is the crucible of creation. The ornithopters of Dune are the eye of the duck, and Villeneuve resolved them to perfect foveal vision. Getting this detail so right allowed everything else to swim out of mirage and into pinpoint perfection.

  • In the book the harvester was lost because the Harkonnens sabotaged the Carryall, not because of a malfunction. There were also several Fremen visiting the Spice sands on the Harvester who didn't get on the Ornithopters and Paul correctly guessed who they were.

    @kdryan21@kdryan212 жыл бұрын
    • In the book the carryall's crew was overpowered and the carryall never showed up, and as part of a plan within a plan, the Harkonnens used the carryall to transport lasguns. In the book, the fear of the lasgun is one of the reasons that Leto doesn't activate his shield in time and is able to be hit by the dart. Denis' adaptation is full of little changes like this where a slight change to one scene ties in to a slight change in a different scene such that they both kind of 'zero out' and leave us with a tighter story with fewer moving parts. In the book, how do we find out what happened to the carryall? It comes up during the famous "dinner scene" - which also was cut.

    • @@FrankSellsJax Actually, the concept is fleshed out in Children of Dune when Leto II starts experimenting with the sandtrout. There is also some specific reference in Dune when Liet Kynes is left in the desert to die directly over an impending spice blow.

  • I've been a fan of the Frank Herbert books since the early 1980s, when I was in high school. I thought the David Lynch film had some good points, but overall I was disappointed in it and felt afterwards that perhaps the Dune story truly was "unfilmable". It's just so vast and complex, and big movie studios, the only institutions with the resources to create a film version for it, don't seem to have the patience and courage to let those who really understand the story do what needs to be done to render it onto the big screen. And so it was for decades, and I resigned myself to simply enjoying the novels, which I still do to this day. But when I heard Denis Villeneuve was going to make a new Dune film a few years ago, I was elated. Having seen his sensibility and aesthetic in Arrival, I had trust that he would do Dune right. And seeing Dune Part One this past year has justified our trust. His Dune film is a masterwork, and I don't know if I could have been any more pleased with what I saw. With excellent casting, skilled story exposition, jaw-dropping visual depictions, emotionally gripping sound and music, and a steady consistent visual tone that left me wanting more more more...I can barely wait the two more years for Dune Part Two. I love that D.V. is about my age, and was as taken with the story as I was at around the same time I was. And that the idea of making this film has been stewing within him all this time. I feel lucky to have made it this far in life to where I can see the result of his vision, and be simultaneously surprised by it and equally have it feel so familiar and faithful to the original Herbert novel.

  • Denis has gotten closer because he held as close to the novel as possible. In one interview, Herbert stated (paraphrased) that he wanted to see what a "Nature Centric" civilization would look like rather than a "Thing Centric". Important in this is that it is NOT "Technology absent". Rather, the technology that has developed took a different path.
