Restoring an Original Nintendo Gameboy Pocket from 1996. Terrible screen burn requiring a polarizer replacement. The battery contacts were so badly corroded and damaged, they couldn't be salvaged.

  • You can twist the upper shell a bit to get the glue under the screen lose 👍

  • I am literally blown away by this restoration video and there's so much I can describe about the fix. It comes out very old and in a state beyond repair. After almost a half of an hour of cleaning, the rest is history. All the details below (Spoiler): It all started with an aging GameBoy Pocket, a popular device which was noticed less than the regular GameBoy and GameBoy Color. It doesn't function right when you turn it on so you put in a lot of effort to restore it. It also had a screen which was in bad shape. How it was in bad shape is something beyond my expertise and the only logical reason is that it burnt and aged. The reason the GameBoy doesn't work upon insertion of replacement batteries is because of a taint in the battery insertion and conduction port which had negated the functions of the motherboard. The GameBoy pocket also missed an LED light because of damage beyond repair but can it be replaced? It can. It is fixed by unscrewing the parts off in a sequential order from the very back to the motherboard. Then there is occassional conduction checks to see if the motherboard circuits can conduct electricity. It does nothing because it had been negated from a battery acid spill. Other forms of damage and age to the system had been present including rust. After these important first minute inspections, the motherboard comes off in order for a restoration of a GameBoy to be done just right. More and more particles build up on the system resulting from age, rust, grime and crumbs. These kinds of dry germs are also present on the buttons. I really thought it had aged and burnt on the system to time but it had occured to me in some way about a guy burning his GameBoy. Foolish thing to do in an angry fit just because one's losing or struggling to fight off some giant bosses. A certain removal fluid is applied to the screen so it can come off to be restored. It was noticable that plastic toys with gaming screens had some sort of reputation for high levels of difficulty when reparing beyond repair items. The polarizer is then cleaned carefully without burning but not before carefully peeling off the glass or it feels like it. The burn is scrapped clean like how people struggle to get burnt pizza off a pan. Other forms of discolouration is present in the polarizer and the LCD as gunk is cleaned off too, then the two parts are cleaned with a cleaning solution to negate the burn spot on the GameBoy Pocket screen. The wires connect from the motherboard to the speaker and it had been bent from overuse. The conduct iron which is not entirely damaged had to be replaced as it clearly had an invisible shorting. Every bit by bit, crevice to crevice and corner to corner is cleaned using a hot tool and some cleaning silver. After the detailed fix and clean, the small parts then go in a bowl full of vinegar and the damaged ones had needed replacing as indicated in the video. Re-soldering is applied to some parts in the motherboard to connect to new and existing battery conduction iron and the existing piece is rinsed in some kind of motherboard friendly alcohol. The deep cleaning applies to all other parts of the GameBoy including the body itself. The plastic parts and some others are bathed in soapy water for cleaning because it becomes brand new. The motherboard is also cleaned but with a cleaning fluid because it would give renewable life to the system. All the practical holes including the headphone jack are also cleaned and a Qtip is enough to get inside carefully without damage. All the parts are put back together in the same order from the motherboard to the back and the screen to the body. After screwing it air tight, batteries are put into the port and then closed with a replacement battery door. It is then labeled with a Nintendo compliance label. A stone inside a speaker caused the speakers not to be heard correctly. The stone had been removed and the GameBoy finally begins to work again in good working order and it appears as new as the one originally bought. I can imagine it took a skilled person to fix this GameBoy. You are a restoration genius. How did you do it? It all looks new. You even rid this GameBoy of the gunk in the gaps. You had the working hands of Rubber Man. It's all clean and it can play games again. The toy, not the influential catchphrase.

    • Wow, we have a details person in our midst. And a great and accurate writer. This is more than just a comment, it's an amazing review worthy of Josh, the clever Restore Techique guy. Brilliant, thank you, would love to see you do the same on his other videos. 🤩

  • I'd use a solder pump for the big solder blobs (at the battery connectors) first. Also a cheap dremel might help with the polishing (buttons, maybe display). Altogether nice work. I like watching repairs. And I learnt that you don't always have to replace a display. Cool!

    • Thanks for watching and for the tips. I've used a solder pump before and didn't like it, but it was a cheap one. I want to get a good one. I've got a dremel, but I've been too afraid to use it for polishing plastic. Afraid I'll melt/warp the plastic.

  • This was a really good restoration, atleast there's no need to retrobright colorful ones, and hopefully the new polarizer will not get sunburnt in the near future.
